Non-invasive identification of melanoma with near-infrared and skin impedance spectroscopy.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: An early diagnosis of cutaneous malignant melanoma is of high importance for good prognosis. An objective, non-invasive instrument could improve the diagnostic accuracy of melanoma and decrease unnecessary biopsies. The aim of this study was to investigate the use of Near-infrared and skin impedance spectroscopy in combination as a tool to distinguish between malignant and benign skin tumours. METHODS: Near-infrared and skin impedance spectra were collected in vivo on 50 naevi or suspect melanomas prior to excision. Received data were analysed using multivariate techniques

Pilot study of fluid shift assessment using bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy.

Maintaining fluid balance between intracellular and extracellular compartments is essential for physiological stability, yet disturbances in this equilibrium are common in conditions such as dehydration, sepsis, and perioperative stress. Traditional techniques for quantifying body water distribution, including isotope dilution, are accurate but invasive and unsuitable for repeated or bedside monitoring. Bioelectrical impedance spectroscopy (BIS) offers a non-invasive, rapid, and frequency-dependent approach to estimating total body water (TBW), extracellular water (ECW), and intracellular wate

Deep learning-based electrical impedance spectroscopy analysis for malignant and potentially malignant oral disorder detection.

Electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a powerful tool used to investigate the properties of materials and biological tissues. This study presents one of the first applications of EIS for the detection and classification of oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and oral cancer. We aimed to apply EIS in conjunction with deep learning to assist the clinical diagnosis of OPMD and oral cancer as a non-invasive diagnostic technology. Currently, the diagnosis of OPMD and oral cancer relies on clinical examination and histopathological analysis of invasive scalpel tissue biopsies, which is

Bio-impedance spectroscopy added to a fluid management protocol does not improve preservation of residual kidney function in incident hemodialysis patients in a randomized controlled trial.

Avoiding excessive dialysis-associated volume depletion may help preserve residual kidney function (RKF). To establish whether knowledge of the estimated normally hydrated weight from bioimpedance measurements (BI-NHW) when setting the post-hemodialysis target weight (TW) might mitigate rate of loss of RKF, we undertook an open label, randomized controlled trial in incident patients receiving HD, with clinicians and patients blinded to bioimpedance readings in controls. A total of 439 patients with over 500 ml urine/day or residual GFR exceeding 3 ml/min/1.73m2 were recruited from 34 United Ki

Reepithelialization in focus: Non-invasive monitoring of epidermal wound healing in vitro.

Up to today, in vivo studies are the gold standard for testing of new therapeutics for cutaneous wound healing. Alternative in vitro studies are mostly limited to two-dimensional cell cultures and thus only poorly reflect the complex physiological wound situation. Here we present a new three-dimensional wound model based on a reconstructed human epidermis (RHE). We introduce impedance spectroscopy as a time-resolved test method to determine the efficacy of wound healing non-destructively by focusing on the barrier function of the RHE as a main feature of intact skin. We assessed the skin barri

Peptide-based electrochemical biosensor for juvenile idiopathic arthritis detection.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is a wide group of diseases, characterized by synovial inflammation and joint tissue damage. Due to the delay in the implementation of biomarkers into clinical practice and the association with severe sequels, there is an imperative need for new JIA diagnosis strategies. Electrochemical biosensors based on screen-printed electrodes and peptides are promising alternatives for molecular diagnosis. In this work, a novel biosensor for detecting juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) was developed based on the immobilization of the PRF+1 mimetic peptide, as recognit

Sensitive Impedimetric Immunoassay of Japanese Encephalitis Virus Based on Enzyme Biocatalyzed Precipitation on a Gold Nanoparticle-modified Screen-printed Carbon Electrode.

A sensitive and disposable electrochemical impedance biosensor to detect Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was developed based on a gold nanoparticle (AuNP)-modified screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE). A biosensor was fabricated through covalent grafting of a mixed self-assembled monolayer on AuNPs with a specific antibody. To detect JEV and achieve signal amplification, the horseradish peroxidase (HRP)-labeled second antibody was linked to the biosensor through a sandwich immunity reaction. HRP was used to catalyze 4-chloro-1-naphthol oxidation to produce an insoluble precipitate, which i

Influence of peritoneal dialysis solution on measurements of fluid status by bioimpedance spectroscopy.

PURPOSE AND METHODS: The accurate estimation of volume status is a central problem in dialysis patients. Recently, a bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) device (BCM Body Composition Monitor FMC, Germany) has attained growing interest in this regard. By processing the raw data for extracellular water (ECW) and intracellular water (ICW) by means of a validated body composition model, this device allows a quantification of the individual fluid overload (FO) compared to a representative healthy population. In this study, we addressed the issue whether the presence of peritoneal dialysate has an impact

The role of hydrogen-bonded interphase in achieving optimal performance of nitrile-butadiene rubber/graphene oxide nanocomposites.

Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets (0.5-2.0 phr) were incorporated into nitrile-butadiene rubber (NBR) to clarify how interfacial chemistry and dispersion control macroscopic performance. GO was synthesized by a modified Hummers method, and different filler concentrations of NBR/GO were prepared via solution-coagulation followed by sulfur vulcanization. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirmed multilayer GO and best sheet dispersion at 1 phr, whereas 2 phr showed initial aggregation. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed that the NBR bac

Reduction in liquid fragility and enhancement in ionic conductivity in the glassy phase of [BmIm][NTf2] ionic liquid under nano-confinement: PALS and BDS investigations.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) have evidenced fundamental changes in the structural and dynamic properties of the room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL or IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)-imide ([BmIm][NTf2]) under confinement in SBA-15 nano-pores (average pore size of ∼5 nm). It is observed that the nano-confinement transformed the fragility of the IL [BmIm][NTf2] from high to low, resulting in a reduction in the ionic conductivity and diffusion coefficient of the ions inside the nano-pores at room tempe…

Interface Quality Control of Self-Assembled Monolayer for Highly Sensitive Protein Detection Based on EGOFETs.

Biosensors based on electrolyte-gated organic field-effect transistors (EGOFETs) have attracted considerable attention due to their advantages, including low cost, inherent signal amplification, and low-voltage operation. A critical step influencing sensing performance is the integration of specific receptors onto the device surface. Among various strategies, the covalent immobilization of biorecognition elements onto gold surfaces via thiol chemistry is one of the most widely used approaches. In this study, we report the optimization of a mixed self-assembled monolayer (SAM) composed of 11-me

Novel Spinel Li-Cr Nano-Ferrites: Structure, Morphology, and Electrical/Dielectric Properties.

This article reports on the synthesis and physicochemical characterization of a novel complex ferrite material, LiCr3.4Fe1.6O8, prepared via the sol-gel method. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed that the synthesized compound is a single-phase material with a spinel-type structure and cubic symmetry. Raman spectroscopy was employed to investigate the vibrational modes, and the observed peaks corresponding to Fe-O and Cr-O bonds further validated the spinel-like structure of the compound. The microstructure and elemental composition were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM)
