Twenty-two patients with smear-negative miliary tuberculosis underwent fiberbronchoscopy and brush smears; bronchial aspirates and transbronchial lung biopsy specimens were obtained. A definite diagnosis of tuberculosis was made in 16 (73 percent) patients. A rapid diagnosis was established in 14 of these 16 patients either from brush smears alone (three) or bronchial aspirate smear alone (one) or exclusively by histopathologic study of biopsy specimens (seven). One hundred ten consecutive patients undergoing 35-cm flexible sigmoidoscopy were enrolled in a study to compare the efficacy of one vs two enemas (Fleet's) in achieving adequate bowel preparation. A new technique for injecting sclerosant into oesophageal varices uses a flexible gastroscope. Once the gastroscope has been inserted a flexible tube with a window cut into its distal end is pushed down over the gastroscope until a varix protrudes through the window. OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of an awake fiberoptic intubation (AFOI) protocol.
METHODS: We enrolled 40 patients with simulated difficult intubation. The protocol consisted of conscious sedation (midazolam, 0.03 mg/kg and sufentanil, 0.1 µg/kg), regional anesthesia, and intubation. The time, first-attempt intubation success rate, hemodynamic parameters, blood oxygen saturation (SpO2), intubation amnesia rate, patient satisfaction, and relative complications were recorded.
