Electrospray ionization (ESI) mass spectra were recorded for a range of substituted isoindoline nitroxides, two isoindoline nitroxide dimers and two piperidinyl nitroxides. In all cases the dominant molecular species arise from oxidation rather than protonation, an unusual process in ESI. Fragment ion spectroscopy was used to establish fragmentation mechanisms for the nitroxides under ESI conditions.

Much outstanding progress concerning the application of ESR spectroscopy/imaging in the biomedical field has been made in recent years. The literature in this field has already been specifically covered by several reviews. The capacity of Kupffer cells and blood monocytes to release free oxygen radicals was studied by chemiluminescence (CL) response during hepatic amebiasis in guinea pigs. Guinea pigs infected with Entamoeba histolytica intramesenterically were sacrificed on days 0, 2, 5 and 8 post-infection. Hepatic lesions were graded I-IV. We have studied the effects of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, Cu(II) (3,5-diisopropylsalicylate)2 (CuDIPS) and other copper compounds on radiation transformation in vitro using C3H 10T1/2 cells. When present only during irradiation, high concentrations of SOD in the medium enhanced transformation, while catalase, inactivated SOD (autoclaved), CuDIPS, cupric chloride and cuprous chloride inhibited the initiation phase of radiation transformation.
