Canavan disease (CD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that occurs predominantly but not exclusively in Ashkenazi Jews. It is characterized by a normal birth, rapidly followed by signs of lack of interest, hypotonia, and megalencephaly, resulting in early death. Genetic studies suggest that among Ashkenazi Jews the carrier frequency is between 1/35 and 1/59. Dentists aware of CD can assist in the treatment of infants and children afflicted with this disorder. Early dental treatment may support parents and siblings in caring for the child with CD and help create good family dynamics.

Primary lactase deficiency (PLD), the physiological decline of lactase, is associated with the LCT-13910C/T and LCT-22018G/A polymorphisms. Typhoid fever remains a major cause of mortality in developing countries, with a case-fatality rate (CFR) of 12%-32%, whereas in developed countries this rate has successfully been reduced to < 2%. Toxoplasmosis seroprevalence varies considerably between countries. We studied the seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii IgG antibodies in a national sample of the Israeli population; 2794 sera were tested. The highest age-adjusted seroprevalence rate was in Arabs (non-Bedouins) (60.4%), significantly higher compared to the rate in Jews (19.9%) and Bedouins (27.5%) (P < 0.01). We conducted a prospective study to determine the clinical picture and impact of respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) on hospitalization for acute bronchiolitis of pediatric patients less than 2 years of age belonging to two different ethnic groups in Southern Israel: Jews and Bedouins. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis accounted for 33% of all new cases of tuberculosis identified at the Soroka Medical Center in Beer Sheva, Israel, during a 10-year period. The most common types of extrapulmonary infection diagnosed were genitourinary tuberculosis (54% of patients), lymphadenitis (13%), pleural tuberculosis (9%), and tuberculosis of bones and joints (8%). Of 92 patients, 51% were Jews of Ethiopian origin, 29% were Jews of non-Ethiopian origin, and 20% were Bedouins. Thus, extrapulmonary tuberculosis remains a significant problem for Israel's heterogeneous population.

METHODS: Hospital records of 113 patients discharged from the Soroka Medical Center with the diagnosis of varicella during a 4.5-year period were reviewed.

Tissue typing was performed on a group of 51 patients with Heberden's nodes (HN) (45 Ashkenazic and 6 non-Ashkenazic Jews).
