Linguistical and psychometric validation of the MIND Youth Questionnaire (My-Q) in Swedish.

BACKGROUND: The Mind Youth Questionnaire is a multidimensional health-related quality-of-life questionnaire designed for pediatric diabetes care and exists in Dutch, English, and Spanish. METHODS: The aim of this study was to linguistically and psychometrically validate the Mind Youth Questionnaire (My-Q) for Swedish-speaking youths with type 1 diabetes. The linguistic process of the Dutch version followed ISPOR´s guidelines. For face validity, youths with type 1 diabetes and diabetes nurses were interviewed. Three stigma items were included. The final Swedish My-Q consists of 38 items. A tot

Evaluating the compatibility of predictive coding as a model of linguistic predictability effects in reading.

Emerging work suggests that the computational architecture of predictive coding (PC), widely studied in visual perception, may be an appropriate model for understanding predictability effects in real-time reading (i. e., the influence of a preceding sentence context on current word processing via putative anticipatory mechanisms). We evaluated four hypotheses derived from PC models focused on: (1) bottom-up prediction error, (2) top-down sensory prediction, (3) biological plausibility, and (4) hierarchical inference. We argue that many empirical effects of predictability during reading are gen

Syntactic complexity of written text as a structural linguistic marker of depressive symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Language analysis methods have been increasingly explored for the detection of depressive symptoms. However, current approaches have largely focused on analysing the thematic content of language, while the underlying structure and grammatical composition of language remains underexamined. The current study assessed features of syntactic complexity in written text as potential linguistic markers of depressive symptoms. METHODS: Adult participants (n = 196) experiencing depressive symptoms completed four writing tasks (Personal Biography; Neutral Writing; Narrative Imagery; Letter t

Linguistic and Material Ways of Communicating with Cows-The Dung Pusher as a Semiotic Resource.

This study examines how farm workers working with cattle talk to and interact with these non-human animals. This study presents linguistic animal studies and multi-species pragmatics, and it is based on fieldwork, interviews, and video recordings from several types of Finnish dairy farms. This study concentrates especially on one facet of human-cattle interaction: how humans use dung pushers and other sticks when communicating with cows. Thus, it draws on the materiality of language. It is shown how objects, bodies, and spaces, as well as words and linguistic constructions, are meaningful in h

Shared Principles of Individuation Underpin Object-Event Correspondences Cross-Linguistically.

Entities in both the spatial and the temporal domains are characterized by a shared notion of individuation. Within the spatial domain, objects (e.g., table, ball) are discrete, countable mental individuals, and are distinct from unindividuated substances (e.g., sand, water). Within the temporal domain, bounded events (e.g., pile up a deck of cards) are mental individuals: They are internally structured in terms of distinct temporal stages and a well-defined endpoint; as such, they differ from unbounded events (e.g., shuffle a deck of cards) that lack such features. A key question left open by

Voice and linguistic features support early attentional filtering of irrelevant stimuli.

In cocktail party-type environments, listeners must segregate simultaneous acoustic sources and select one for processing. Behavioral studies have established that both low-level voice differences (e.g., pitch) and high-level linguistic differences (e.g., word content) aid these processes. Electroencephalography (EEG) studies have demonstrated that the brain filters voices based on low-level features early in sensory processing, but it is unclear whether linguistic differences also support early filtering. In this EEG study, listeners attended to a lateralized auditory stream of target syllabl

Maltese readers with Down syndrome: Cognitive and linguistic factors in reading performance.

PURPOSE: This study examined the word and nonword reading abilities of Maltese participants with Down syndrome and explored how cognitive-linguistic skills and orthographic depth influence decoding performance. We hypothesised that word reading would exceed nonword reading in participants with Down syndrome, with a larger discrepancy in English given its deeper orthography. METHOD: A comparative cross-sectional design was used. Fifteen participants with Down sydnrome and 19 typically developing peers, matched on fluid intelligence, completed word and nonword reading assessments in either Malt

Linguistic perspective-taking in verbal communication with LLMs: evidence of an egocentric bias.

Since the expansion of generative AI's functions, chatbots such as Open AI's Chat-GPT appear as more than tools. They can be perceived as communicative partners, shaping exchanges with high variability and linguistic competence. Current versions, such as Chat-GPT 5.5, even provide spoken language using different verbal styles and vocabulary, intonation and prosody. Investigating this new context of communication, we question whether people expect chatbots to detect non-literal meanings. Extending the illusory transparency of intention research paradigm introduced by Keysar, information was pre

Logic and felicity in the face of intellectual disability: linguistic scales and Williams syndrome.

Quantifiers (some, all), numerals (two, three), and logical connectors (and, or) belong to the class of logical expressions that convey abstract and complex meaning, denoting properties of sets or relations between sets. In this paper, we show that individuals with Williams syndrome (WS), who display severe deficits in spatial and numerical cognition, and mild-to-moderate intellectual disability, can nevertheless carry out the semantic computations necessary for understanding these expressions. We report data from two experiments testing knowledge of (a) the set-theoretic properties of basic E

Differential linguistic patterns across Rorschach, TAT, and SCT in individuals with PTSD.

Background: While prior studies have examined linguistic markers of PTSD using everyday discourse or autobiographical narratives, comparative studies identifying specific markers across different projective personality tests remain limited. Objective: To investigate whether language features in projective personality tests differentiate individuals with PTSD from non-PTSD controls and assess their predictive value for symptom severity.Method: Verbatim transcripts from 283 participants (183 PTSD, 100 controls) across the Rorschach, TAT, and SCT were analysed using NLP across six categories: nega

Automated Speech Markers of Alzheimer Dementia: Test of Cross-Linguistic Generalizability.

BACKGROUND: Automated speech and language analysis (ASLA) is gaining momentum as a noninvasive, affordable, and scalable approach for the early detection of Alzheimer disease (AD). Nevertheless, the literature presents 2 notable limitations. First, many studies use computationally derived features that lack clinical interpretability. Second, a significant proportion of ASLA studies have been conducted exclusively in English speakers. These shortcomings reduce the utility and generalizability of existing findings. OBJECTIVE: To address these gaps, we investigated whether interpretable linguist

Effectiveness of Intensive Linguistic Intervention in Autism Spectrum Disorder: A Case Study.

Background: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is currently classified as a neurodevelopmental disorder with increasing prevalence year by year. One of the key characteristics of this population is the persistent and variable difficulty they present in the development of functional language. For this reason, most individuals with ASD are candidates for linguistic treatment, especially during the early stages of development. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of an individualized and intensive oral language and communication intervention. Method: This research was conducted throu

Revisiting the Cerebellum's Linguistic Role: Evidence for Cerebellar Involvement in Expressive Syntax.

The cerebellum's role in language remains unclear, though cerebellar damage may influence expressive language via neurological or compensatory mechanisms. This study investigated the syntactic complexity of spoken language in individuals with dysarthria due to cerebellar ataxia. Speech samples were collected via a picture description task from 26 individuals with cerebellar ataxia and 28 age- and sex-matched controls. Two complete sentences from each participant's picture description were selected for analysis and categorized by the presence of dependent clauses. A novel syntactic complexity s

The linguocultural concept of /pandemic/пaндeмия in Chinese, English, and Russian linguistic consciousness.

BACKGROUND: As a major public health event, the pandemic has been widely discussed across various academic disciplines. In the field of humanities, most pandemic-related studies use introspective methods such as description and interpretation, indicating to some extent subjective and one-sided conclusions. In this paper, pandemic-related linguistic information and linguistic big data serve as research materials. Based on the theory of linguocultural concepts, the study employed natural language processing methods such as the analysis of word frequency and collocation co-occurrence to conduct a

Impaired audio-visual associations in dyslexia: evidence beyond linguistic processing.

Audio-visual (AV) associations are central to many aspects of behavior, including the initial steps of learning to read. The acquisition of AV pairings has been explored in individuals with varying literacy skills, including children with developmental dyslexia. Most previous studies examined performance in AV associative tasks looking at the pairings between linguistic auditory material and visual stimuli, thus confounding AV learning with phonological and/or verbal abilities. In the present study, we introduce an AV learning paradigm relying on non-linguistic auditory stimuli and novel visua

The effects of family, culture and sex on linguistic development across 20 languages.

Languages vary in their complexity; caregivers vary in the way they structure their communicative interactions with children; and boys and girls can differ in their language skills. Using a multilevel modelling approach, we explored how these factors influence the path of language acquisition for young children growing up around the world (mean age 2-years 9-months; 56 girls). Across 43 different sites, we analysed 103 mother-child pairs who spoke 3,170,633 utterances, 16,209,659 morphemes, divided across 20 different languages: Afrikaans, Catalan, Cantonese, Danish, Dutch, English, Farsi, Fre

Screening for early Alzheimer's disease: enhancing diagnosis with linguistic features and biomarkers.

INTRODUCTION: Research has shown that speech analysis demonstrates sensitivity in detecting early Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the relation between linguistic features and cognitive tests or biomarkers remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate how linguistic features help identify cognitive impairments in patients in the early stages of AD. METHOD: This study analyzed connected speech from 80 participants and categorized the participants into early-AD and normal control (NC) groups. The participants underwent amyloid-β positron emission tomography scans, brain magnetic resonance imagi

Causal role of frontocentral beta oscillation in comprehending linguistic communicative functions.

Linguistic communication is often considered as an action serving the function of conveying the speaker's goal to the addressee. Although neuroimaging studies have suggested a role of the motor system in comprehending communicative functions, the underlying mechanism is yet to be specified. Here, by two EEG experiments and a tACS experiment, we demonstrate that the frontocentral beta oscillation, which represents action states, plays a crucial part in linguistic communication understanding. Participants read scripts involving two interlocutors and rated the interlocutors' attitudes. Each scrip

Race and Ethnicity and Clinician Linguistic Expressions of Doubt in Hospital Admission Notes.

IMPORTANCE: Stigmatizing language in electronic health records (EHRs) can generate or reinforce negative stereotypes about patients from minoritized groups and erode their trust and experience. However, less is known about the use of such language to cast doubt on patient clinical history in hospital settings. OBJECTIVE: To compare the prevalence of language expressing doubt about patient clinical history (eg, experiences and symptoms) in hospital admission notes by patient race and ethnicity. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In this cohort study, natural language processing tools were app

Primary Progressive Aphasia in Italian and English: A Cross-Linguistic Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Current formulations of primary progressive aphasia (PPA) derive largely from English-speaking patients. We hypothesized that language-specific characteristics influence PPA phenotypes in 2 contrasting languages: Italian and English. METHODS: We undertook a retrospective, cross-sectional, observational comparison of 2 patient cohorts representing all major PPA syndromes, in London and Florence. Neuropsychological scores in a range of linguistic and general cognitive domains were normalized to native speaker controls and dichotomized as impaired/unimpaired. Proportio
