PURPOSE: To describe the incidence, prevalence, and clinical characteristics of presumed ocular histoplasmosis syndrome (POHS) in a Histoplasma endemic region.
METHODS: The International Classification of Diseases, 9th and 10th Revision codes were used to search the Rochester Epidemiology Project, a record-linkage system for medical care provided in Olmsted County, MN. Medical records were reviewed to confirm POHS diagnoses in county residents from January 1, 2006, to December 31, 2015. Age- and sex-adjusted incidence rates were calculated and adjusted to the 2010 U.S. White population.

Over a three-month period in early 2017, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office investigated nine apparent opioid toxicity deaths that occurred in three separate urban, suburban, and rural counties in our jurisdiction. All decedents were known substance abusers and had reportedly recently used heroin; most were found with drug paraphernalia. In 2017, Minnesota battled its largest measles outbreak in nearly 30 years, with 79 cases, most of them Somali-American children. In this study, we gathered vaccination and enrollment data for incoming kindergarteners in Minnesota over fall 2012-2016 from the Minnesota Department of Health. We also gathered the number of measles cases by county in 2017. We found that MMR coverage has substantial variation across districts and district types. Most studies on shoulder arthroplasty include a diverse group of patients presenting to a tertiary care center. Little information is available regarding outcomes in a community setting. We reviewed 98 residents (110 shoulders) of Olmsted County, Minnesota who had shoulder arthroplasties from 1976 to 2000. There were 65 total shoulder arthroplasties and 45 humeral head replacements. The medical record linkage system for the Rochester Epidemiology Project provided the means to identify 1,444 incidence cases of ischemic stroke and age- and sex-matched controls from the population from 1960 to 1984 to conduct a case-control study nested in the population. METHODS: The study consisted of a 1-year survey of 534 adolescent work-related injuries reported to the Department of Labor and Industry and a cross-sectional survey of 3312 public high school students from throughout Minnesota. PURPOSE: To investigate the incidence of remote subclinical blastomycosis in a high-risk population of forestry workers.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study consisted of 39 male forestry workers from northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin, areas endemic for blastomycosis but not for histoplasmosis. All subjects were histoplasmin skin test-negative, and none had ever been diagnosed with blastomycosis or pneumonia. After several decades absence, opium smoking has reappeared in the U.S. Introduced by Indochinese refugees in the early 1980's, it has spread to several regions of the country. In this report the characteristics of refugee opium addicts is described. In addition, the factors contributing to a fertile situation for opium addiction are presented. Finally, implications of these findings and remedial recommendations are suggested.
