Inoculation with Talaromyces trachyspermus and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus alongside sulfonylurea herbicides alters Orobanche aegyptiaca and tomato growth.

The life cycle and unique biology of broomrape (Orobanche aegyptiaca) have made the management of this root- parasitic plant one of the greatest challenges in agriculture. The objective of this investigation was to ascertain whether the efficacy of chemical weed control could be enhanced through the inoculation of tomato plants with mycorrhizal and Talaromyces trachyspermus fungus. The combined effect of utilizing these fungi with the sulfonylurea herbicides (rimsulfuron and sulfosulfuron) with two application methods (herbigation and foliar spraying) was investigated in greenhouse and field t

The Janus face of reactive oxygen species in resistance and susceptibility of plants to necrotrophic and biotrophic pathogens.

Plant pathogens can be divided into biotrophs and necrotrophs according to their different life styles; biotrophs prefer living, while necrotrophs prefer dead cells for nutritional purposes. Therefore tissue necrosis caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS) during pathogen infection increases host susceptibility to necrotrophic, but resistance to biotrophic pathogen. Consequently, elevation of antioxidant capacity of plants enhances their tolerance to development of necroses caused by necrotrophic pathogens. Plant hormones can strongly influence induction of ROS and antioxidants, thereby influe

Biodegradable mulching and nitrogen fertilization differentially affect AM fungal community structure and functioning in a semi-arid maize agroecosystem.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are central to plant nutrient acquisition and soil functioning, yet how biodegradable mulching and nitrogen (N) fertilization jointly regulate AM fungal communities and maize productivity remains poorly understood. We conducted a factorial field experiment combining biodegradable mulching with five N fertilization rates ranging from 0 to 300 kg N ha⁻¹. Soil properties, plant nutrient status, AM fungal richness and community composition, root length colonization (RLC), and maize yield were assessed across the jointing, silking, and filling stages. N fertilizati

Chemical armed allies promote plant resistance to pathogen: The contribution of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi to an invasive weed.

Invasive weeds often possess strong resistance to biotic stresses, which causes huge ecological problems. Both plant growth regulators (PGRs) and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi contribute to plant growth and resistance. However, their combined interactions in invasive plants' defense remain poorly understood. To address this knowledge gap, the invasive weed Alternanthera philoxeroides was treated with gibberellins (GA) and paclobutrazol (PAC), inoculated with Clariodeoglous etunicatum to test its response to pathogenic fungi. We found that these two PGRs suppressed AM fungi colonization. Bo

Analysis of key nodes and metabolic pathways in the protein network of secondary metabolism in Panax quinquefolius L. enhanced by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi.

BACKGROUND: Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi (AMF) formed symbiotic relationships with roots and were capable of promoting the growth of the medicinal plant Panax quinquefolius L. as well as the accumulation of its active component, ginsenosides. However, the regulatory mechanisms underlying this process remained unclear. To elucidate the protein signaling pathways through which AMF regulates the secondary metabolism of P. quinquefolius and to promote the application of AMF inoculants in the cultivation of medicinal herbs, this study employed a controlled pot experiment, establishing an AMF-inocul

Effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus on the functional bacteria assembly in promoting plant growth and nutrient acquisition in karst soil.

BACKGROUND: The poor soil nutrients in the degraded karst region frequently restrict vegetation growth. Soil bacterial communities are essential drivers of biogeochemical cycling and regulate soil nutrient availability. Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi play a fundamental role in shaping rhizosphere bacterial communities and promoting plant growth and nutrient acquisition. Nevertheless, how AM fungi mediated bacterial community interaction and assembly involved in nutrient cycling to promote plant growth and nutrient acquisition in karst soil remains unclear. In this study, a greenhouse pot ex

Co-extraction of Small RNAs and Total RNA from Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Roots Using Laser Microdissection.

Understanding gene expression at the cellular level is essential for dissecting plant-microbe interactions. Laser microdissection (LMD) is a powerful approach for isolating specific plant cell types without the need for molecular markers, enabling the recovery of nucleic acids from defined cellular populations. In plant systems, LMD has been widely applied to study cell-type-specific transcriptomes, including those involved in arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis, where cellular heterogeneity limits bulk tissue analyses. Recent evidence highlights the role of small RNAs (sRNAs) as key regulat

Effects of elevated CO2 and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on root exudates of black locust seedlings grown in cadmium-polluted soils by 13C isotope tracer.

Root exudates contribute to heavy metal migration in soils, which are easily influenced by many factors such as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and atmospheric CO2. To understand the effect of increasing atmospheric CO2 and AMF on root exudates of plants exposed to heavy metals, we investigated the impacts of elevated CO2 (eCO2) and AMF strain Funneliformis mosseae (FM) on root exudates of black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) cultivated in cadmium (Cd)-polluted soils using 13C isotope tracer under sterile conditions. 93 metabolites were identified from root exudates including phenolic aci

Lithology and niche habitat have significant effect on arbuscular mycorrhizal fungal abundance and their interspecific interactions.

The chemical properties of bedrock play a crucial role in shaping the communities of soil and root-associated arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). We investigate AMF community composition and diversity in bulk soil, rhizosphere soil, and roots in karst and non-karst forests. Chemical properties of bedrock of the calcium oxide (CaO) and ratio of calcium oxide and magnesium oxide (Ca/Mg), soil pH, and exchangeable Ca2+ were higher in karst carbonate rocks compared to non-karst clastic rocks. Conversely, bedrock phosphorus content (P-rock), silicon dioxide (SiO2) content, and tree diversity exhibi

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and Streptomyces: brothers in arms to shape the structure and function of the hyphosphere microbiome in the early stage of interaction.

BACKGROUND: Fungi and bacteria coexist in a wide variety of environments, and their interactions are now recognized as the norm in most agroecosystems. These microbial communities harbor keystone taxa, which facilitate connectivity between fungal and bacterial communities, influencing their composition and functions. The roots of most plants are associated with arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi, which develop dense networks of hyphae in the soil. The surface of these hyphae (called the hyphosphere) is the region where multiple interactions with microbial communities can occur, e.g., exchanging

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Drive Organo-Mineral Association in Iron Ore Tailings: Unravelling Microstructure at the Submicron Scale by Synchrotron-Based FTIR and STXM-NEXAFS.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi play an important role in organic matter (OM) stabilization in Fe ore tailings for eco-engineered soil formation. However, little has been understood about the AM fungi-derived organic signature and organo-mineral interactions in situ at the submicron scale. In this study, a compartmentalized cultivation system was used to investigate the role of AM fungi in OM formation and stabilization in tailings. Particularly, microspectroscopic analyses including synchrotron-based transmission Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning transmission X-ray microspectro

Nitric oxide and AMF-mediated regulation of soil enzymes activities, cysteine-H2S system and thiol metabolites in mitigating chromium (Cr (VI)) toxicity in pigeonpea genotypes.

Cr (VI) hampers plant growth and yield by reducing essential nutrient uptake as it competes for phosphate and sulfate transporters. Nitric oxide (NO) and mycorrhization play important roles in mitigating Cr (VI) toxicity. Present study aimed to compare the potential of AMF (Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi)-Rhizoglomus intraradices and NO (0.25 mM) in alleviating Cr (VI) stress (0, 10 and 20 mg/kg) in two differentially tolerant pigeonpea genotypes (Pusa 2001 and AL 201). Cr (VI) toxicity reduced growth, mycorrhizal colonization, nutrient uptake, and overall productivity by inducing reactive oxyge

On the outside looking in: roles of endogenous and exogenous strigolactones.

A collection of small molecules called strigolactones (SLs) act as both endogenous hormones to control plant development and as ecological communication cues between organisms. SL signalling overlaps with that of a class of smoke-derived compounds, karrikins (KARs), which have distinct yet overlapping developmental effects on plants. Although the roles of SLs in shoot and root development, in the promotion of arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungal branching and in parasitic plant germination have been well characterized, recent data have illustrated broader roles for these compounds in the rhizosp

Development of low-cost formulations of plant growth-promoting bacteria to be used as inoculants in beneficial agricultural technologies.

Phosphorus is one of the main macronutrients for plant development. Despite its large deposits in soils, it is scarcely available for plants. Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria, belonging to the group of plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR), are capable of mobilizing deposits of insoluble phosphates in the soil. The use of PGPR as inoculants provides an environmentally sustainable approach to increase crop production. The effectiveness of inoculants depends on their proper production, formulation and storage in order to ensure the application of the required number of viable microbial cell

Variation in nutrient-acquisition patterns by mycorrhizal fungi of rare and common orchids explains diversification in a global biodiversity hotspot.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Many terrestrial orchids have an obligate requirement for mycorrhizal associations to provide nutritional support from germination to establishment. This study will investigate the ability of orchid mycorrhizal fungi (OMF) to utilize a variety of nutrient sources in the nutrient-impoverished (low organic) soils of the Southwest Australian Floristic Region (SWAFR) in order to effectively compete, survive and sustain the orchid host. METHODS: Mycorrhizal fungi representing key OMF genera were isolated from three common and widespread species: Pterostylis recurva, Caladenia

Petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in boreal forest soils: a mycorrhizal ecosystems perspective.

The importance of developing multi-disciplinary approaches to solving problems relating to anthropogenic pollution is now clearly appreciated by the scientific community, and this is especially evident in boreal ecosystems exposed to escalating threats of petroleum hydrocarbon (PHC) contamination through expanded natural resource extraction activities. This review aims to synthesize information regarding the fate and behaviour of PHCs in boreal forest soils in both ecological and sustainable management contexts. From this, we hope to evaluate potential management strategies, identify gaps in k

High temperature effect on microflora of radish root-inhabited zone and nutrient solutions for radish growth.

The effect of high temperatures (35 and 45 degrees C) on microflora of the root zone of radish plants grown in phytotron was evaluated by the response of microorganisms from 9 indicator groups. Phytotron air temperature elevated to 35 degrees C for 20 hours caused no significant changes in qualitative and quantitative composition of the root microflora in experimental plants. By the end of the experiment, the species diversity of microflora had changed. The amount of phytopathogenic microorganisms decreased which can be interpreted as more stable co-existence of microflora with plants. The num

Impact of macronutrients and monsoon on the AM fungal community structure within lateral root systems of Hevea brasiliensis.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are important root symbionts that enhance nutrient acquisition, water uptake, stress tolerance, and soil ecosystem functioning in terrestrial plants. In perennial plantation systems like Hevea brasiliensis, understanding the dynamics of root-associated AMF communities under varying seasonal and nutrient conditions is essential for developing sustainable nutrient management strategies, particularly in emerging rubber growing regions. In the present study, we investigated the, composition, diversity, and seasonal dynamics of AMF communities directly associated

Multiscale Structuring of Mycorrhizal Fungal Communities of Tropical Epiphytic Orchids.

Symbiotic interactions with root-associated fungi are essential for orchid germination, nutrient acquisition and survival, yet the factors structuring these symbioses in tropical epiphytic orchids remain poorly understood. Tropical montane forests provide an ideal system for examining these interactions because steep environmental gradients occur over short geographic distances. We investigated how elevation, variation among populations within elevational belts and host identity shape root-associated fungal communities in the southern Ecuadorian Andes, a region of exceptional epiphytic orchid

Rapid detection of cultivated truffle fungi (Tuber) from truffles and ectomycorrhizal root tips using loop-mediated isothermal amplification.

UNLABELLED: Truffle fungi, such as Tuber melanosporum and T. aestivum, are prized luxury food products that have been historically cultivated in Mediterranean regions of Europe. Recent advances in truffle cultivation have led to the establishment of productive truffle orchards in North America, South America, China, and Australia. Despite these advances, a consistent issue has been the introduction and accidental cultivation of non-target truffle species. Non-target truffle species (e.g., T. indicum and T. brumale) often morphologically resemble target species (e.g., T. melanosporum) and may u
