Aortic dissection (AD) is a rare but serious complication of transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of acute kidney injury (AKI). We herein report an older man who developed AKI secondary to Stanford type B AD after transfemoral TAVI. Non-contrast computed tomography (CT) revealed inward displacement of the calcified intima, which is a key early finding. Contrast-enhanced CT confirmed AD extending to the renal artery. As endovascular intervention was not feasible, conservative management was selected. Nephrologists should recognize…

PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM: This article provides guidance on optimizing the management of pediatric patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESK … home or in-center hemodialysis.
METHODS: The Leadership of the Canadian Association of Paediatric Nephrologists (CAPN), which is affiliated with the CSN, solicited a team of clinicians and researchers with expertise in pediatric home and in-center dialysis. The goal was to adapt the guidelines recently adopted for Canadian adult dialysis patients for pediatri …

A 42-year-old hemodialysis (HD) patient was investigated in our department for symptomatic heart failure (HF) despite daily home dialysis. He had a history of living donor kidney transplantation at the age of 18 that lasted 7 years. Home dialysis was then started. At the age of 40, he developed acute heart failure symptoms. Echocardiography revealed severe dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). Coronarography and myocardial perfusion scintigraphy showed no abnormal findings. Betablockers were administrated and RAAS inhibitor dosing was optimized. Dyspnea persisted and patient was referred to our depart

BACKGROUND: It is estimated that up to half of kidney-transplant (KT) recipients develop asymptomatic bacteriuria (ASB) within three years posttransplantation. Despite limited evidence supporting screening or treatment, most centers continue routine surveillance and antibiotic therapy, raising concerns about antimicrobial resistance, drug toxicity, and costs. We sought to describe current Canadian practices and perceptions regarding ASB screening and treatment among nephrologists caring for KT recipients.
METHODS: Nationwide cross-sectional survey. All nephrologists affiliated with the Canadi…

BACKGROUND: Obesity and chronic kidney disease (CKD) often coexist and compound the risk of adverse health outcomes including dysglycemia and accelerated CKD progression. Obesity also limits access to kidney transplantation. The objectives of this study were to (1) understand current weight-management practices in CKD centres across Canada and (2) describe the availability of weight-management services nationwide.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional, quantitative, online survey of English-speaking nephrologists practicing in Canada in 2025. The 23-question survey was developed based on a …

The interest in determining the number of nephrons in the kidney dates back to the 1960s, when an influential laboratory method for determining ex vivo the number of nephrons in the kidneys was described by Bricker. Over the years, various methods have been developed to estimate the number of nephrons in living beings as accurately as possible. These modern methods combine data such as the glomerular density, the percentage of glomeruli in sclerosis calculated from biopsy samples, and the kidney volume, which can be precisely estimated from magnetic resonance, CT scan, or specific ultrasound m

Here, we review the most recent findings on the effects of SARS-CoV-2 infection on kidney diseases, including acute kidney injury, and examine the potential effects of ARBs on the outcomes of patients with COVID-19. Lastly, we discuss the clinical management of COVID-19 patients with existing chronic renal disorders, particularly those in dialysis and with kidney transplants.

Diabetic nephropathy is usually a presumptive diagnosis based on clinical and biological evidence. Renal biopsies are performed in diabetic patients with atypical findings evoking non-diabetic renal disease who could benefit from specific therapies. French speaking nephrologists were asked which criteria they retain to indicate renal biopsy in patients with type 2 diabetes and albuminuria>0.5g/day or equivalent through an online anonymous questionnaire. Among the suggested criteria were absence of diabetic retinopathy, hematuria, rapid decrease in GFR, short diabetes duration or rapid raise of…

Many patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease have unmet palliative care (PC) needs. Physical and emotional symptoms are common. Some, like uremia and fluid overload, improve with dialysis, but the increasing age of patients initiating renal replacement therapy leaves many untreatable comorbidities like dementia and frailty to negatively impact quality of life. Written by nephrologists and PC clinicians, this article will help PC providers to have a richer understanding of kidney disease-related symptom burden, disease trajectory, prognosis, and barriers to hospic…

INTRODUCTION: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common medical condition for patients during hospitalization and is associated with long-term sequelae. The incidence of AKI is increasing, whereas in-hospital mortality from the condition is decreasing. We compared outcomes following discharge in patients with AKI between those who received follow-up with nephrologists and those who only received routine follow-up (i.e., follow-up not at the nephrology department).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective cohort study identified 66,859 AKI survivors with discharge eGFR values of less than 60 mL/m…

Identifying risk factors for disease onset and progression has been a core focus in nephrology research. Mendelian Randomization (MR) has emerged as a powerful genetic epidemiological approach, utilizing genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to establish causal relationships between modifiable risk factors and kidney disease outcomes. MR uses genetic variants as instrumental variables to infer causal relationships between exposures and disease outcomes. This method leverages the natural randomization of genetic variants to balance confounders, akin to matched cohorts in observational research

The evaluation and management of renal masses, predominantly of the clear cell renal cell carcinoma subtype, have been evolving over the past several years and demanding greater attention from nephrologists. Oncologic survival of localized tumors approaches 100%, where survival is more closely tied to underlying comorbidities including chronic kidney disease (CKD). Early diagnosis and thus increasing prevalence related to incidental discovery of renal masses allows greater emphasis on nephron-sparing procedures and for residual kidney function preservation. Compared with radical nephrectomy, p…

Chimeric antigen receptor T (CAR-T) cell therapy, an emerging personalized immunotherapy for various haematologic malignancies, autoimmune diseases and other conditions, involves the modification of patients' T cells to express a chimeric antigen receptor that recognizes tumour or autoimmune cell antigens, allowing CAR-T cells to destroy cancerous and other target cells selectively. Despite remarkable clinical improvements in patients, multiple adverse effects have been associated with CAR-T cell therapy. Among the most recognized adverse effects are cytokine release syndrome, immune effector
