OBJECT: A large volume of patients presented to a Level I pediatric trauma center during and after a recent tornado disaster. Injuries of the central and peripheral nervous systems and the medical responses of a pediatric neurosurgical team are reviewed.
METHODS: The clinical courses of patients who suffered cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve injuries due to the tornado storm are reported. The clinical actions taken by the neurosurgical team during and after the event are reviewed and the lessons learned are discussed.
RESULTS: The tornado storm system moved through the Tuscaloosa and Bir

OBJECTIVE: Readmission to the hospital within 30 days of discharge is used as a surrogate marker for quality and value of care in the United States (US) healthcare system. Concern exists regarding the value of 30-day readmission as a quality of care metric in neurosurgical patients. Few studies have assessed 30-day readmission rates in neurosurgical patients outside the US. The authors performed a retrospective review of all adult neurosurgical patients admitted to a single Canadian neurosurgical academic center and who were discharged to home to assess for the all-cause 30-day readmission rat

RESULTS: From September 2007 to October 2009, 296 neurosurgical procedures were performed at CJTH. Fifty-seven (19%) were performed in 43 pediatric patients (16 girls and 27 boys) with an average age of 7.5 years (range 11 days-18 years). Thirty-one of the 57 procedures (54%) were for battlefield-related trauma and 26 for …

In developing countries like Pakistan, specialized neurosurgical centers, particularly their emergency departments and operating theaters, face a substantial patient load, emphasizing the urgent need for expanded facilities and resources.

From a pathophysiological point of view, early neurosurgical treatment seems essential to prevent secondary brain injury and has been stated as the "time-is-brain" concept. However, the question immediately rises: "Is there an optimal time window for acute intracranial neurosurgical interventions?" In neurosurgery, treatment modality has been studied far more extensively than timing to surgery ("time-to-surgery"). The majority of acute intracranial neurosurgical interventions are carried out for traumatic brain injury and hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke. Current guidelines for traumatic brain i

Laser interstitial thermal therapy (LITT) is a minimally invasive technique for treating intracranial tumors, originally introduced in 1983. Its use in neurosurgical procedures was historically limited by early technical difficulties related to the monitoring and control of the extent of thermal damage. The development of magnetic resonance thermography and its application to LITT have allowed for real-time thermal imaging and feedback control during laser energy delivery, allowing for precise and accurate provision of tissue hyperthermia. Improvements in laser probe design, surgical stereotac…

The steel scalpel and scalp clips have been commonly used for scalp incision in many neurosurgical procedures. Electrocautery is used mainly for subcutaneous and deep-layer dissection. The use of electrocautery on scalp incision has been avoided because of possible adverse events such as wound dehiscence and infection. We report our experience in Colorado-microdissection needle electrocautery for scalp incisions performed in our institution between November, 2006 and March, 2009. The rate of wound infection was compared in patients using the microdissection needle (100 procedures, n=93) and th…

The pneumocephalus is commonly encountered after neurosurgical procedures. The collections are usually small with benign behavior, and they respond to a conservative therapy. However, there is a high percentage of cases that may behave like a space-occupying lesion. A high index of suspicion is necessary to make the diagnosis and prompt treatment of these cases. Monitoring Near infra-red spectrometry (NIRS) monitoring could help to complete the diagnosis and treatment in these cases. A venous air embolism is a common complication in neurosurgical procedures that are performed in a sitting posi…

Rhabdomyolysis (RM) is a potentially fatal or disabling clinical syndrome resulting in muscle necrosis and leakage of muscle constituents into the blood. Lactic acidosis and more serious complications such as acute renal failure may occur in up to half of recognized cases, so accurate diagnosis is required. We present three cases in which RM occurred in patients undergoing neurosurgical procedures performed in the lateral position. A review of the literature is provided together with a framework for the prevention of this surgical complication. Three patients underwent neurosurgical procedures…

BACKGROUND: Neurosurgical conditions and procedures are associated with varying in-hospital mortality rates, which represent one of several quality indicators. This study aims to determine and report in-hospital mortality rates across German neurosurgical departments in 2023.
METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of all neurosurgical cases treated in Germany in 2023 was conducted using nationwide hospital billing data reported under § 21 of the Hospital Remuneration Act. In-hospital mortality was defined as death during hospitalization (discharge status: deceased).
RESULTS: Neurosurgical depar

OBJECTIVE: More than 5 billion individuals lack access to essential surgical care. Neurosurgical care is especially limited in low-income countries (LICs). Studies describing neurosurgical care in LICs are critical for understanding global disparities in access to neurosurgical procedures. To better understand these disparities, we conducted a systematic review of the literature identifying neurosurgical patients in LICs.
METHODS: MEDLINE (PubMed), Embase (embase.com), and Cochrane Library (Wiley) databases were systematically searched to retrieve studies describing neurosurgical care in LICs…

Intraoperative patient movement under general anesthesia, even with multiple monitoring modalities and adequate anesthetic depth, is rare but can lead to serious complications. Such movements are particularly dangerous in neurosurgical procedures, where precision is crucial. Similar risks exist in ophthalmic, spinal, and cardiac surgeries, where patient immobilization is vital to prevent adverse outcomes. This report examines the case of a 37-year-old male diagnosed with recurrent cholesterol granuloma located at the petrous apex, which necessitated neurosurgical intervention. During the proce…

OBJECTIVES: The large number of infected patients requiring mechanical ventilation has led to the postponement of scheduled neurosurgical procedures during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The aims of this study were to investigate the factors that influence the decision to postpone scheduled neurosurgical procedures and to evaluate the effect of the restriction in scheduled surgery adopted to deal with the first outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain on the outcome of patients awaiting surgery.

Symptomatic trigeminal neuralgia, especially in multiple sclerosis, can be successfully eliminated by percutaneously controlled thermocoagulation of the Gasserian ganglion. Atypical facial neuralgias are only improved by this intervention if secondary pains accompany the persistent pains. All neurosurgical procedures must be avoided with persistent unclassifiable pains in the area of distritubion of one or more branches of the trigeminus, especially in young people. The problem of neurosurgical treatment of analgesia dolorosa has not yet been finally solved.

Psychiatric disorders are the hidden pandemic of the current century. Despite major advances in medical management, the options for treatment are still limited. Neurosurgical intervention is effective for certain refractory psychiatric illnesses and the options range from stimulation surgeries to precise disconnection procedures influencing the neuronal network. Literature regarding stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is now enriched with successful treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder, major depression disorder, and anorexia nervosa. These procedures by reducing compulsions, obsessions, dep

INTRODUCTION: Operative cancellations adversely affect patient health and impose resource strain on the healthcare system. Here, our objective was to describe neurosurgical cancellations at five Canadian academic institutions.
METHODS: The Canadian Neurosurgery Research Collaborative performed a retrospective cohort study capturing neurosurgical procedure cancellation data at five Canadian academic centres, during the period between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2018. Demographics, procedure type, reason for cancellation, admission status and case acuity were collected. Cancellation rates
