In view of the toxic potential of medicated oils containing methyl salicylate, we have studied the existing packaging of 10 commonly used preparations from Hong Kong and Singapore and identified areas for improvement with respect to the prevention of poisonings. They were all packed in translucent bottles without child-resistant closures. The methyl salicylate content ranged from 15 to 67%. Ingestion of button batteries poses an acute life-threatening injury risk, particularly for small children. The Canadian Surveillance System for Poison Information reported 1021 single-substance button-battery ingestion cases from 2020 to 2023, and the British Columbia Drug and Poison Information Centre (DPIC) managed 548 unintentional ingestion cases from 2013 to 2023. The present study focuses on the shelf-life extension of partially baked rolls using modified atmosphere packaging in combination with oxygen scavenging technology.
