[Computer-assisted, improved evaluation of Comberg images with three-dimensional graphic reconstruction].

BACKGROUND: Small metallic foreign bodies may easily be identified by conventional x-ray. The Comberg shell is a useful tool to discriminate between extra-respectively intraocular localization of the foreign body. However, poor results are common when evaluating the x-ray films. METHODS: We have improved evaluation of the radiographs by means of a program for a personal computer, regarding the following aspects: To avoid errors of measurement the relevant points of the radiograms are read by a digitizer-tableau. The different projection failure of the lateral respectively posteroanterior x-ra

Optimizing Case-based detection performance in a multiview CAD system for mammography.

When reading mammograms, radiologists combine information from multiple views to detect abnormalities. Most computer-aided detection (CAD) systems, however, use primitive methods for inclusion of multiview context or analyze each view independently. In previous research it was found that in mammography lesion-based detection performance of CAD systems can be improved when correspondences between MLO and CC views are taken into account. However, detection at case level detection did not improve. In this paper, we propose a new learning method for multiview CAD systems, which is aimed at optimiz

An efficient deep learning-based morphology aware hierarchical mixture of features for tuberculosis screening using segmentation of chest X-ray images.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic lung disorder caused by bacterial infection and is a major cause of death. Lung cancer also has a significant impact, and existing solutions concentrate on initial screening, which mainly results in better outcomes at a comparatively lower cost. Screening, particularly by chest X-rays (CXR), is globally recognized as an effective method for reducing lung cancer mortality. Therefore, a precise and initial identification of TB is highly crucial, or else, it threatens lives. In the investigation into cases of TB, CXR images are not only the primary method of diagnos

With the Advent of Tomosynthesis in the Workup of Mammographic Abnormality, is Spot Compression Mammography Now Obsolete? An Initial Clinical Experience.

To determine if the routine use of spot compression mammography is now obsolete in the assessment of screen detected masses, asymmetries and architectural distortion since the availability of digital breast tomosynthesis. We introduced breast tomosynthesis in the workup of screen detected abnormalities in our screening center in January 2015. During an initial learning period with tomosynthesis standard spot compression views were also performed. Three consultant breast radiologists retrospectively reviewed all screening mammograms recalled for assessment over the first 6-month period. We asse

Hunting for signal in the noise: identifying robust CT radiomic features across variable scanning settings.

OBJECTIVES: Radiomics offers the potential to derive quantitative biomarkers from medical images, but its clinical implementation remains limited by poor reproducibility and uncertainty about whether features capture true biological signals or merely reflect noise. This study systematically evaluated the repeatability of CT radiomic features from a biological phantom to identify features that are both reproducible and informative. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A bovine phantom was analyzed to assess the reproducibility of radiomic features across different acquisition and reconstruction settings. Ra

An innovative 3D-3D superimposition for assessing anatomical uniqueness of frontal sinuses through segmentation on CT scans.

Anatomical uniqueness plays a significant role in the personal identification process of unknown deceased. Frontal sinuses have been widely used in the past decades for this purpose, mostly using 2D X-ray techniques. However, the modern 3D CT-based segmentation methods may help in developing novel and more reliable methods of identification. This study aims at assessing the anatomical uniqueness of frontal sinuses through the 3D model registration. Thirty subjects who underwent two maxillofacial CT scans (interval: 1 month to 5 years) were selected from a hospital database. Frontal sinuses wer

A novel technique for distal locking of intramedullary nail based on two non-constrained fluoroscopic images and navigation.

Distal locking is one of the most difficult steps in intramedullary nailing. Numerous methods can help the surgeon, but all are time-consuming and involve much irradiation. We have developed and tested a new method based on only two fluoroscopic shots that do not need to be taken in the axes of the holes. This avoids requiring the presence of an experienced fluoroscopy operator to accurately adjust the imaging device in front of the locking holes, and decreases the exposure to radiation of the patient and medical team. A 3-D model of the distal nail and of its locking holes was constructed fro

Overview of Computer Aided Detection and Computer Aided Diagnosis Systems for Lung Nodule Detection in Computed Tomography.

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer has become a major cause of cancer-related deaths. Detection of potentially malignant lung nodules is essential for the early diagnosis and clinical management of lung cancer. In clinical practice, the interpretation of Computed Tomography (CT) images is challenging for radiologists due to a large number of cases. There is a high rate of false positives in the manual findings. Computer aided detection system (CAD) and computer aided diagnosis systems (CADx) enhance the radiologists in accurately delineating the lung nodules. OBJECTIVES: The objective is to analyze CAD

Visualization of acute aortic injury with cinematic rendering.

The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the appearance of traumatic aortic injuries with the novel 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) visualization technique known as cinematic rendering (CR). CR uses a novel lighting model to create photorealistic images with excellent anatomic detail for improved depiction of the extent of traumatic aortic injuries. Four patients with acute traumatic aortic injury identified on thoracic CT angiography were analyzed by creating standard 3D volume-rendered reconstructions and CR images on an independent 3D workstation. In this series of four patie

A novel supervised approach for segmentation of lung parenchyma from chest CT for computer-aided diagnosis.

Segmentation of lung parenchyma from the chest computed tomography is an important task in analysis of chest computed tomography for diagnosis of lung disorders. It is a challenging task especially in the presence of peripherally placed pathology bearing regions. In this work, we propose a segmentation approach to segment lung parenchyma from chest. The first step is to segment the lungs using iterative thresholding followed by morphological operations. If the two lungs are not separated, the lung junction and its neighborhood are identified and local thresholding is applied. The second step i

Studies comparing screen-film mammography and full-field digital mammography in breast cancer screening: updated review.

Full-field digital mammography (FFDM) has several potential benefits as compared with screen-film mammography (SFM) in mammography screening. Digital technology also opens for implementation of advanced applications, including computer-aided detection (CAD) and tomosynthesis. Phantom studies and experimental clinical studies have shown that FFDM is equal or slightly superior to SFM for detection and characterization of mammographic abnormalities. Despite obvious advantages, the conversion to digital mammography has been slower than anticipated, and not only due to higher costs. Until very rece

Zone-based analysis for automated detection of abnormalities in chest radiographs.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to develop an automated method for detection of local texture-based and density-based abnormalities in chest radiographs. METHODS: The method was based on profile analysis to detect abnormalities in chest radiographs. In the method, one density-based feature, Density Symmetry Index, and two texture-based features, Roughness Maximum Index and Roughness Symmetry Index, were used to detect abnormalities in the lung fields. In each chest radiograph, the lung fields were divided into four zones initially and then the method was applied to each zone separately. Fo

Progress in SPECT/CT imaging of prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common type of cancer (other than skin cancer) among men in the United States. Although prostate cancer is one of the few cancers that grow so slowly that it may never threaten the lives of some patients, it can be lethal once metastasized. Indium-111 capromab pendetide (ProstaScint, Cytogen Corporation, Princeton, NJ) imaging is indicated for staging and recurrence detection of the disease, and is particularly useful to determine whether or not the disease has spread to distant metastatic sites. However, the interpretation of 111In-capromab pendetide is challenging

Report Supervision.

Segmentation models can surpass radiologists, classification models, and vision-language models in tumor detection. Furthermore, segmentation models outline tumors, allowing radiologists to better verify and trust the AI output. However, their main limitation is the scarcity of tumor masks: creating one 3D tumor mask takes up to 30 min, so most public CT datasets contain only a few hundred masks, and even the largest private datasets contain only a couple of thousand. Tumor masks are not produced in clinical routine, but radiology reports are. Public datasets contain tens of thousands of CT-Re
