[Prospects and limits of animal breeding from the physiological aspects].

Livestock breeding is characterized by substantial increases in performance in recent years. However, pathophysiological changes have to be considered when increased production levels will exceed maximal physiological capacities. Gastrointestinal adaptation processes of ruminants kept under aride grazing conditions are discussed in comparison with european sheep breeds. The high stress susceptibility in pigs which is genetically determined is taken as a further example to explain the onset of diseases on the basis of pathophysiological mechanisms being induced by breeding techniques. From this

New developments in esophageal function testing and esophageal manifestations of connective tissue disorders.

This work summarizes new and emerging metrics and tools in esophageal function testing and their potential clinical impact. Because the diagnostic sensitivity and reliability of conventional impedance-pH variables are suboptimal, several novel impedance parameters, such as the postreflux swallow-induced peristaltic wave index and the mean nocturnal baseline impedance, as well as mucosal impedance, are entering a validation stage prior to general clinical use. The accurate diagnosis of behavioral disorders in patients with rumination syndrome and supragastric belching using ambulatory multiple …

Chlamydiaceae and chlamydial infections in sheep or goats.

Chlamydiae induce a range of pathological syndromes in small ruminants. Abortion is the most common clinical expression of the infection that causes important economic losses and presents a risk to human health, particularly in pregnant women. The present paper gives an overview of chlamydial infections in sheep and goats, focusing specifically on abortion and on recent data brought by cellular and genomic approaches regarding genotyping, virulence of strains, epidemiology, diagnosis, pathogenesis and control of the disease.

Clinical microbiology of Coxiella burnetii and relevant aspects for the diagnosis and control of the zoonotic disease Q fever.

Coxiella burnetii is the causative agent of the zoonotic disease Q fever. Since its first recognition as a disease in the 1930s, the knowledge about the agent and the disease itself has increased. This review summarizes the current knowledge on C. burnetii and Q fever, its pathogenesis, diagnosis and control. C. burnetii is a bacterium which naturally replicates inside human or animal host cells. The clinical presentation of Q fever varies per host species. C. burnetii infection in animals is mainly asymptomatic except for pregnant ruminants in which abortions and stillbirth can occur. In huma

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC).

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are important enteric pathogens worldwide, causing diarrhea with or without blood visibly present and hemolytic uremic syndrome. STEC are unique among diarrheogenic E coli in producing Shiga toxin type 1 and type 2, the virulence factors responsible for bloody diarrhea and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Cattle and other ruminants are the natural reservoir of STEC as their normal intestinal flora. Humans become infected by consumption of foods contaminated with cattle feces. Early diagnosis of STEC infection is important because of the contraindication

'I felt like I'd lost control of everything': An exploration of metacognition and masculinity in men experiencing suicidality.

BACKGROUND: Seventy-five per cent of UK suicides are completed by men, and associated masculinity beliefs are well researched. The self-regulatory executive functioning (S-REF) model of distress is governed by metacognitive beliefs about mental processes, such as worry and rumination. Little is known about metacognition in male suicidality and how these processes interact with masculinity beliefs, suicidal ideation and behaviour. AIMS: To identify which aspects of the S-REF model were present in a sample of men experiencing suicidality, and to consider how these processes interact with mascul

Principal domains of quantitative anxiety trait in subjects with lifetime history of mania.

BACKGROUND: High comorbidity rates for anxiety have been documented in subjects with history of mania or hypomania. We explored the presence of latent constructs of quantitative anxiety in subjects who have a history of mania or hypomania. METHODS: We conducted an exploratory factor analysis of anxiety trait in 212 subjects who have a lifetime history of at least one manic/hypomanic syndrome. Participants were originally recruited for a Costa Rican sibling pair genetic study of Bipolar Disorder. We used principal factors extraction method with squared multiple correlations (SAS/SAT Profession

[Hypotrichosis and oligodontia, combined with an Xq-deletion, in a calf of the Swiss Holstein breed].

Hypotrichosis and oligodontia associated with a chromosomal anomaly (Xq-deletion) are described in a 11-month old cattle (Simmenthal/Red Holstein cross-breed). This chromosomal anomaly was accompanied with hairlessness and grievous teeth abnormalities. The animal had a very thin haircoat, had only one incisor and between one to three molars per mandible or maxilla. This resulted in reduced food intake, reduced rumination, and retarded growth. Post-mortem examination revealed lesions in the kidneys (bilateral chronic interstitial nephritis), adrenals (hyperplasia), pancreas (focal fibrosis) and

The Utility of Esophageal Motility Testing in Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD).

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Here, we discuss how esophageal motor testing plays important roles in patients with suspected gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In addition to guiding appropriate placement of catheters for ambulatory reflux monitoring, esophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) rules out confounding diagnoses, such as achalasia spectrum disorders, that can present with symptoms similar to that of GERD, but are managed very differently. RECENT FINDINGS: HRM performed with impedance in the post-prandial setting (PP-HRIM) can assess for rumination syndrome or supragastric belching, whi…

Psychological factors influencing results of cholecystectomy.

BACKGROUND: Cholecystectomy is a surgical gold-standard procedure for gallbladder diseases, among which gallstones are the most frequent. Despite the introduction of minimally invasive surgery and broad access to ultrasound examination there is a group of patients in whom the surgery ailments persist. Those vague ailments can be perceived from a psychological point of view as somatization or even somatoform disorders. METHODS: The aim of the study, designed as a case-control study, was to evaluate psychological characteristics that may accompany the incidence of so-called post-cholecystectomy

Vaccines for Mycoplasma Diseases of Small Ruminants: A Neglected Area of Research.

Mycoplasmas cause some of the most economically important diseases of sheep and goats, including diseases listed by the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) such as contagious caprine pleuropneumonia (CCPP) and contagious agalactia (CA). Other important mycoplasma diseases include chronic respiratory and arthritic syndrome (CRAS) and atypical pneumonia, both present on all continents where small ruminants are farmed. Unfortunately, owing to a lack of investment, most commercial vaccines for these diseases are of poor quality, being mostly composed of killed bacteriocins of dubious or unk

[Yellow oat grass intoxication in horses: Pitfalls by producing hay from extensive landscapes? A case report].

Vitamin-D intoxication by yellow oat grass is often reported under the syndrome of enzootic calcinosis in ruminants in the upper regions of the Alps. The intake of Trisetum flavescens in ruminants and horses induces calcification of soft tissue, including vessels, tendons and ligaments, lung, heart and kidneys. Clinical symptoms, including a reluctance to move, inappetence, body-weight loss and impaired organ function, are frequently observed. To date, there are only a very few case reports about yellow-oat-grass intoxication in horses. The present case report describes Vitamin-D intoxication

Prevalence of antibodies against Rift Valley fever virus in Kenyan wildlife.

Rift Valley fever virus (RVFV) is an arbovirus associated with periodic outbreaks, mostly on the African continent, of febrile disease accompanied by abortion in livestock, and a severe, fatal haemorrhagic syndrome in humans. However, the maintenance of the virus during the inter-epidemic period (IEP) when there is low or no disease activity detected in livestock or humans has not been determined. This study report prevalence of RVFV-neutralizing antibodies in sera (n=896) collected from 16 Kenyan wildlife species including at least 35% that were born during the 1999-2006 IEP. Specimens from s

Functional nausea and vomiting.

BACKGROUND: There is a group of patients who have unexplained chronic nausea and/or vomiting. In the past these patients were labelled as having psychogenic vomiting. However, there is little evidence that such a condition exists. Rather, these patients usually have a functional gastrointestinal disorder (functional nausea and vomiting). OBJECTIVE: This article describes the three important syndromes in adults that clinicians need to recognise: cyclic vomiting syndrome, functional vomiting, and chronic idiopathic nausea. DISCUSSION: Cyclic vomiting syndrome presents with stereotypical episod

Haemorrhagic bowel syndrome in dairy cattle: possible role of Clostridium perfringens type A in the disease complex.

A survey based on clinical, pathological and microbiological investigations was performed on 11 Brown Swiss cattle affected with depression, anorexia, agalaxia, ruminal hypomotility, abdominal pain and melaena. In eight animals, macroscopical lesions consisted in haemorrhagic enteritis in the small intestine. Seven of eight isolates from tissue samples were identified as Clostridum perfringens type A, and four were identified as C. perfringens type A with the beta2 toxin gene. Based on these observations, animals were considered affected with haemorrhagic bowel syndrome.

Prevalence and associated risk factors of Linguatula serrata infection in definitive and intermediate hosts in Iran and other countries: A systematic review.

Linguatula serrata is known as a cosmopolitan zoonotic parasite whose adult form inhabits the upper respiratory system, nasal airways and frontal sinuses of dogs, foxes, cats and other carnivores, which are recognized as its final hosts. Its immature form resides in mesenteric lymph nodes, liver, lungs and spleen of herbivorous and other ruminants, which serve as its intermediate hosts. Both adult and nymphal stages of L. serrata can infect humans, which typically occurs via ingestion of eggs of infected dogs or consumption of raw or undercooked infected viscera of contaminated herbivores. Cardiac Intoxication/Nutritional/Metabolic.

This article reviews cardiotoxic syndromes in ruminants caused by various toxins, including ionophores, vitamin E/selenium deficiencies, gossypol, Taxus plants, cardiac glycosides, grayanotoxins, and others. It emphasizes that early recognition, thorough history, and diagnostic sampling are crucial for accurate diagnosis. Since no specific antidotes exist, prompt removal of the toxic source and environmental management are key to improving outcomes. Understanding clinical patterns and implementing herd-wide prevention strategies are vital for reducing morbidity, mortality, and long-term health
