The distribution of organised lymphoid tissue in the alimentary tracts of koalas (Phascolarctos cinereus) and possums (Trichosurus vulpecula and Pseudocheirus peregrinus).

The anatomical arrangement of organised lymphoid tissues of the alimentary tract for 3 Australian marsupials, the koala (Phascolarctos cinereus), the common brushtail possum (Trichosurus vulpecula and the common ringtail possum (Pseudocheirus peregrinus), was determined by gross dissection and acetic acid treatment. Oropharyngeal tonsils were consistently found in the dorsolateral wall of the caudal oropharynx in all 3 species and additionally in the ventral soft palate of the koala. Aggregated lymphoid nodules (Peyer's patches) were present in the small intestine of koalas, ringtail possums a

Clinical Aspects of the Use of Botulinum Toxin Type A in the Treatment of Dysfunction of the Masticatory System.

The purpose of this work is to present a new, still experimental method of treating temporomandibular disorders (TMD) by injecting botulinum toxin Type A (TBX-A), using its effects not as a toxin but as a medication. The mechanism of TBX-A, indications and contraindications for its use, as well as possible side effects, are discussed. Temporomandibular disorders are of concern to approximately 70-80% of the population. The effect of botulinum toxin depends on blocking the release of acetylcholine from a presynaptic neuromuscular synapse and, in the autonomous system, blocking its release from

Effects of intervertebral disc disorders of low back on the mandibular kinematic: kinesiographic study.

BACKGROUND: Intervertebral disc disorders are one of the most common causes of low back pain. Neuromuscular dysfunction frequently is present in patients with lumbar disc herniation. When considering joint dysfunction, it is important to remember that the spine functions as a unit. Dysfunction on one level can trigger compensatory changes in other spinal levels or in other areas of the musculoskeleton. Findings demonstrated the relationship between stomatognathic and postural systems justifying the hypothesis that muscular-skeletal impairment in one system could affect the other one. However, e

Influence of experimental oesophageal acidification on masseter muscle activity, cervicofacial behaviour and autonomic nervous activity in wakefulness.

Recent studies have been revealing the relationship between the stomatognathic system and the gastrointestinal tract. However, the effect of oesophageal acid stimulation on masticatory muscle activity during wakefulness has not been fully elucidated. To examine whether intra-oesophageal acidification induces masticatory muscle activity, a randomised trial was conducted investigating the effect of oesophageal acid infusion on masseter muscle activity, autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and subjective symptoms. Polygraphic monitoring consisting of electromyography of the masseter muscle, el…

Coexistence of Lack of Clinical Manifestation of Oral Mycosis and Systemic Diseases in Edentulous Patients Using Removable Prosthetic Restorations.

OBJECTIVE: It is believed that oral infections can increase the risk of systematic diseases, such as atherosclerosis and coronary heart disease, stroke, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, etc. It seems that oral invasive pathogens induce a systemic inflammatory response via mediators released by the cardiovascular system and liver, which increases the risk to the patient of these systematic infections, such as hypertension. On the basis of previous studies of the stomatognathic system, investigating the coexistence of systemic diseases and inflammati…

Postural alterations and pulmonary function of mouth-breathing children.

UNLABELLED: Mouth-breathing children have changes in their stomatognathic system, which result in head projection, stress increase in the scapular belt muscles and postural adaptations. Although thoracic shape and posture can influence ventilatory dynamics, we didn't find studies addressing pulmonary function of mouth-breathing children. AIMS: this study aimed at analyzing the posture of mouth-breathing children, and studying the existence of correlations between posture and pulmonary volumes. MATERIAL AND METHODS: prospective, observational and cross-sectional study, where the posture and p…

Correlations between dentition anomalies and diseases of the of the postural and movement apparatus--a literature review.

From anatomic and functional aspects the stomatognathic system and the upper cervical spine are closely interlinked. Together with complex neuromuscular relationships, this gives rise to an important field of cooperation between orthodontics and orthopedics. The literature appeals for close interdisciplinary cooperation for patients with syndromes and for those with torticollis and scoliosis. Since orthopedic points of contact are obvious in these special cases, orthopedic aspects are now being taken increasingly into account in farther-reaching studies. With the rising popularity of manual me…

Systemic Effects of Molar and Incisor Biting on Walking Direction With and Without Visual Feedback.

Gait stability and walking direction control are conventionally attributed to coordination among somatosensory, visual, and vestibular systems. Recent evidence of functional interdependence between masticatory and neuromuscular systems indicates that the stomatognathic system is neurologically integrated with various body systems relevant to movement planning and execution. This study investigated the effects of unilateral molar biting and incisor biting on walking with and without visual feedback. A cohort of 31 healthy young adults aged 21 to 30 years (average age of 23.93 ± 1.89) participat…

The significance of masticatory muscle's relaxation in the treatment of the temporomandibular disorders - Review article.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a disease of multifactorial etiology and a complex of symptoms, related to disorders of the masticatory muscles, temporomandibular joints and the surrounding orofacial structures. One of the main problems in the course of TMD disorders is the systematic increase in the tension of the masticatory muscles (masseter muscles, temporalis and medial and lateral pterygoid muscles), what is the cause of many damages and the development of pathological conditions in the stomatognathic system. The article discusses the differences in the structure of the masticatory a…

Management of biomechanical complication of implant-supported restoration of a patient with combination syndrome: a case report.

Combination syndrome (CS) is a pathologic condition of the stomatognathic system characterized by an edentulous maxilla with an atrophic anterior ridge, maxillary papillary hyperplasia, hypertrophic maxillary tuberosities, super-erupted mandibular anterior teeth, as well as atrophic mandibular posterior ridges. This condition can present a challenging situation to the clinician who needs to assemble evidence from all aspects of dentistry to formulate an appropriate treatment plan. One of the possible treatment choices for the fully edentulous patient with a CS is a full-arch implant-supported …

A systematic review on masticatory muscle activity of temporomandibular joint in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disorder characterized by chronic inflammation,  primarily targeting joints. When it affects the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), it can significantly diminish the quality of life for individuals. Despite the increasing recognition of disorders involving TMJ and the importance of the stomatognathic system, there is a limited number of studies on masticatory muscle activity of TMJ in patients with RA and the changes in the function of these keychewing muscles. The objective of this study was to conduct a comprehensive systematic review of existin…
