PURPOSE: Most reports of strabismus after glaucoma drainage device implantation study larger devices and rarely note the incidence of strabismus after Ahmed glaucoma valve (AGV) implantation. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate factors that may decompensate a strabismus or lead to diplopia after refractive surgery.
METHODS: Retrospective study of 19 patients, who presented with binocular decompensation after refractive surgery. Mean age at surgery was 38.89 SD 10.26 (27-63) years. Fourteen patients were myopic, 5 hyperopic, and 5 of them had a marked anisometropia. Vertical strabismus can be associated with paretic or restrictive causes. Paretic causes may be due to a weak muscle or paresis, or to a total lack of muscle function caused by a third, fourth or sixth cranial nerve palsy. PURPOSE: Ultrastructural analysis of extraocular muscle in a case of myopic strabismus fixus.
DESIGN: Interventional case report.
METHODS: Incisional biopsy and ultrastuctural analysis of recti muscles in a female patient with myopic strabismus fixus.
RESULTS: Ultrastuctural analysis revealed evidence of mitochondrial myopathy.
CONCLUSION: Acquired strabismus fixus due to high myopia may be a manifestation of mitochondrial myopathy, a finding that has not been previously reported.

PURPOSE: To improve nursing quality after general anesthesia in children with strabismus operation and prevent from accidents.
METHODS: 136 children with strabismus operation under general anesthesia were observed and cared by the same nursing staff. Efficient managements were performed to cure postoperative complications. The nursing records were analyzed.
RESULTS: In the study, glossocoma occurred in 1 case, asphyxiation in 2 cases, fever in 7 cases, pain in 25 cases, vomiting without eating after awakening in 33 cases. One patient tore off the bandaging lint because of dysphoria.

A synthetic polypentapeptide sleeve was placed around the superior rectus muscle of five New Zealand white rabbits in hopes of preventing postoperative fibrous scarring. Two forms of the polypentapeptide were used. No significant inflammation or scarring occurred with either form of the polypentapeptide when compared to controls. One form elicited a fibrous membrane surrounding the sleeve within 2 weeks. The other elicited no such reaction after 2 months. The latter form of the polypentapeptide may be useful in preventing scarring following strabismus surgery.

The paper analyses results after treatment of patients with vertical squint (53 persons) using a principally new method--binarimetry, as one of diploptic methods. All patients had residual vertical deviation after surgical treatment or a small angle (to 10 degrees). The device and the method of treatment are described. In the most of patients, binocular vision was restored (77.3%) on account of development of vertical fusional reserves and correction of residual deviation.
