A Rare Syndrome Resembling Scleroderma: Huriez Syndrome.

Huriez syndrome, also referred to as "sclerotylosis," is a rare autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by the triad of congenital scleroatrophy of the distal extremities, palmoplantar keratoderma, and hypoplastic nails. The development of aggressive squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) arising in the scleroatrophic area is also a distinctive feature of the syndrome. Early diagnosis is important due to the early onset, mostly in the third to fourth decades of life, and aggressive progress of SCC, which occurs in around 15% of affected individuals. Our patient had palmoplantar keratoderma, scl…

Do you know this syndrome? Leopard syndrome.

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is known as Leopard syndrome, which is a mnemonic rule for multiple lentigines (L), electrocardiographic conduction abnormalities (E), ocular hypertelorism (O), pulmonary stenosis (P), abnormalities of genitalia (A), retardation of growth (R), and deafness (D). We report the case of a 12-year-old patient with some of the abovementioned characteristics: hypertelorism, macroglossia, lentigines, hypospadias, cryptorchidism, subaortic stenosis, growth retardation, and hearing impairment. Due to this set of symptoms, we diagnosed Leopard syndrome.

Do you know this syndrome? Clouston syndrome.

Ectodermal dysplasias are conditions that present primary defects in two or more tissues of ectodermal origin and can be classified as hypohidrotic and hidrotic. Hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia or Clouston syndrome is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis and appears as a triad of clinical findings: palmoplantar keratoderma, nail dystrophy, and hypotrichosis. The hair is sparse and brittle. The nails become thickened and dystrophic, which is an essential characteristic of the syndrome. The diagnosis is made based on clinical findings. This study reports a case of a patient who began with changes …

[Williams-Beuren syndrome (Williams syndrome). Case report].

Williams syndrome is a rare genetic disorder, that occurs equally in all ethnic groups and both sexes. The diagnosis might be missed during childhood in mild cases. However, establishing the diagnosis is important, not only to find the cause of intellectual disability but to look for cardiovascular, endocrine, psychiatry, urology and other conditions, which can occur at any age in the patients' lifetime. This case report presents the story of 47-year-old woman, who was admitted with haematemesis. During her stay on the ward, in the light of the distinctive facial features, mental retardation, …

Rare case of nephrotic syndrome: Schimke syndrome.

Schimke syndrome corresponds to dysplasia of bone and immunity, associated with progressive renal disease secondary to nephrotic syndrome cortico-resistant, with possible other abnormalities such as hypothyroidism and blond marrow aplasia. It is a rare genetic disorder, with few reports in the literature. The most frequent renal involvement is nephrotic syndrome with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and progressive renal failure. The objective of this study was to report a case of Schimke syndrome, diagnostic investigation and management of the case.

Nevoid Basal Cell Carcinoma Syndrome (Gorlin Syndrome).

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome, or basal cell nevus syndrome (Gorlin syndrome), is a rare autosomal dominantly inherited disorder that is characterized by development of basal cell carcinomas from a young age. Other distinguishing clinical features are seen in a majority of patients, and include keratocystic odontogenic tumors (formerly odontogenic keratocysts) as well as dyskeratotic palmar and plantar pitting. A range of skeletal and other developmental abnormalities are also often seen. The disorder is caused by defects in hedgehog signaling which result in constitutive pathway activi…

Fuchs' Uveitis Syndrome: No Longer a Syndrome?

PURPOSE: Rubella virus (RV) has a central role in the etiopathogenesis of Fuchs' uveitis syndrome (FUS). We aim to offer new insights by comprehensive analysis of recent laboratory and epidemiologic data. METHODS: We conducted a literature search for laboratory data and papers on etiopathogenesis. RESULTS: Aqueous humour samples of FUS patients show immunoreactivity to RV, in a specific and sensitive manner. Identification of RV genome confirm intraocular infection in a subset of FUS patients. Epidemiologic findings further support causality. The clinical spectrum of RV-associated uveitis is…

Hypoplastic left heart syndrome in PAGOD syndrome.

Chromosomal abnormalities as well as non-cardiac anomalies have been identified as independent risk factors for surgical morbidity and mortality in Fontan palliation. The combination of malformations consisting of pulmonary hypoplasia, agonadism (sex reversal), omphalocele, and diaphragmatic defect is compatible with pulmonary artery and lung hypoplasia, agonadism, omphalocele, and diaphragmatic defect (PAGOD). Most cases have been associated with cardiac disease, particularly hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) that is potentially destined for Fontan palliation. Reported herein is the case…

Pronator syndrome and anterior interosseous nerve syndrome.

Dysfunction of the median nerve at the elbow or proximal forearm can characterize two distinct clinical entities: pronator syndrome (PS) or anterior interosseous nerve (AIN) syndrome. PS is characterized by vague volar forearm pain, with median nerve paresthesias and minimal motor findings. AIN syndrome is a pure motor palsy of any or all of the muscles innervated by that nerve: the flexor pollicis longus, the flexor digitorum profundus of the index and middle fingers, and the pronator quadratus. The sites of anatomic compression are essentially the same for both disorders. Typically, the find…

Wernekink commissure syndrome: a rare midbrain syndrome.

Wernekink commissure syndrome is a rare midbrain syndrome, which selectively destroys the Wernekink commissure involving the decussation of superior cerebellar peduncle in midbrain. This syndrome may display a clinical picture: bilateral cerebellar ataxia, eye movement disorders, and palatal tremor. We present two cases of the Wernekink commissure syndrome with acute onset of bilateral cerebellar dysfunction confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging. One patient presented internuclear ophthalmoplegia, but neither showed palatal tremor. It is notable that the bilateral cerebellar dysfunction may …

Wells syndrome associated with Churg–Strauss syndrome.

Churg–Strauss syndrome (CSS) is a systemic vasculitis occurring in patients with a history of asthma. Wells' syndrome (WS) is a rare inflammatory dermatosis that clinically resembles cellulitis, and is histologically characterized by eosinophilic infiltration and flame figures. We report a case of WS associated with CSS. There have been three previous reports of WS associated with CSS; ours is the fourth. All cases had bullous lesions, and three cases were positive for antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibodies.

Melkersson-Rosenthal syndrome associated with Down syndrome.

We present a clinical case of Melkersson-Rosenthal (M-R) syndrome associated with Down syndrome. No evidence of this association is described in the literature. We also present a technique for the macrocheilia treatment of lower lip caused by M-R syndrome in a patient with Down syndrome. This patient during pediatric age had many events of facial nerve paralysis and edematous episodes of lower lip with unknown etiology. This technique is based on a wedge full thickness central excision of the lower lip and on a transversal lozenge excision in the vermilion portion with orbicular muscle to reve…

Cronkhite-Canada syndrome associated with myelodysplastic syndrome.

We report a case of Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS) associated with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS). A 54-year-old woman, diagnosed as MDS the prior year after evaluation of anemia, visited our hospital with the chief complaint of epigastric discomfort. She also had dysgeusia, alopecia, atrophic nail change, and pigmentation of the palm, all of which began several months ago. Blood tests revealed severe hypoalbuminemia. Colonoscopy (CS) showed numerous, dense, red polyps throughout the colon and rectum. Biopsy specimens showed stromal edema, infiltration of lymphocytes, and cystic dilatation of…

[Chronic fatigue syndrome--a functional somatic syndrome].

Chronic fatigue can be categorized as a functional somatic syndrome (fss), because there are findings of typical preconditions, trigger mechanisms and maintaining conditions. With relevance for therapy it makes sense to see it as an medical-psychiatric interface-disorder Subsyndromal short episodes of chronic fatigue are many more frequent as three or six month during clearly diagnosed episodes of "neurasthenia" or "chronic fatigue syndrome". Their descriptions are very similar and obvious those means the same matter. For original aetiological assumptions it wasn't any evidence. But there are …
