INTRODUCTION: The identification of CMV antiviral drug resistance (AVDR) is a critical diagnostic test for immunocompromised patients with CMV infection and a failure of virologic response on optimal antiviral treatment. We developed a next-generation sequencing (NGS) assay for CMV AVDR testing and compared the AVDR mutations identified by NGS to Sanger sequencing.

The greatest challenge faced by HIV-treating clinicians today is the management of virologic failure and metabolic complications of anti-HIV treatment. Resistance testing plays an essential role in selecting appropriate agents for salvage therapy. Too often, however, the choice of agents is limited by broad cross-resistance or toxicities, such as hyperlipidemia, peripheral neuropathy, and lipodystrophy. The development of new drugs and new drug combinations offers hope for the future. Novel agents have demonstrated efficacy in treatment-experienced patients in whom current therapy is failing.

OBJECTIVES: As a close relationship has been established between mixed cryoglobulinaemia and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, the clinical, histological and virological findings of patients affected by mixed cryoglobulinaemia were determined.
DESIGN: Hepatitis C virus infection was investigated by the presence of anti-HCV antibodies and PCR amplification of the 5' untranslated region (5' UTR), and the genotype of HCV was also determined according to Okamoto. A bone marrow biopsy was performed in all patients and liver and kidney biopsies when indicated.

In the province of Voyvodina 18 cases of post-vaccinal encephalitis have been recorded, three of which were fatal.The estimated morbidity rate was 0.6 per 10(5) after revaccination, and 3.9 per 10(5) after primary vaccination. The virological studies described, as well as other findings referred to in this report, are consistent with the possibility of an autoimmune aetiology of the post-vaccinal encephalitis cases observed.
