Septic arthritis is a devastating condition; well-established criteria for diagnosis exist in the pediatric population, but not for adults. This study evaluated patient factors and laboratory parameters that may be associated with the diagnosis of septic arthritis in adults. OBJECTIVES: No randomized controlled trials have yet reported an individual patient benefit of initiating combination antiretroviral therapy (cART) at CD4 counts > 350 cells/μL. It is hypothesized that earlier initiation of cART in asymptomatic and otherwise healthy individuals may lead to poorer adherence and subsequently higher rates of resistance development.

PURPOSE: To present a case of traumatic dislocation of an Ophtec Artisan phakic intraocular lens (PIOL) and an analysis of the endothelial cell count.
METHODS: The patient presented with blurred vision in his left eye after sustaining a brow laceration. History included uncomplicated bilateral implantation of an Artisan PIOL to correct myopia.

We report 7 cases of "silent" form of hereditary spherocytosis observed among members of 4 different families. Silent form of hereditary spherocytosis occurred in 5.4% of all patients with hereditary spherocytosis treated in our institute. We analyzed prospectively collected data from 211 HIV-infected patients who underwent bronchoscopy because of pulmonary symptoms during the period 1989-1991. We found an improvement in survival for patients diagnosed with Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in 1991 as compared to 1989 and 1990 (log rank test: p = 0.07).
