PURPOSE: We aim to study certain histopathological characteristics of the retinoblastoma (RB) tumors in globes with clinically advanced RB, which can be correlated with the high-risk features including: tumor differentiation, growth pattern and focality. We also aim to reclassify the tumor pathologically in the analyzed cases according to the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) 8th edition in an attempt to compare the validity of this newest classification.

In blind individuals, visually deprived occipital areas are activated by non-visual stimuli. The extent of this cross-modal activation depends on the age at onset of blindness. Cross-modal inputs have access to several anatomical pathways to reactivate deprived visual areas. Ectopic cross-modal subcortical connections have been shown in anophthalmic animals but not in animals deprived of sight at a later age. BACKGROUND: Brachytherapy is a well established procedure for treatment of malignant choroidal processes. Approximately 5 % of the cases, will show local recurrences within 6 years. The use of Gore-Tex (W. L. Gore & Associates, Flagstaff, AZ, U.S.A.) spheres as orbital implants is investigated. The left eyes of six New Zealand white rabbits were enucleated and spherical implants made of modified Gore-Tex were implanted. After 6 weeks of follow-up, the implants were harvested. No rabbit developed a postoperative infection and no cases of exposure or extrusion were noted. BACKGROUND: Massive retinal gliosis is a rare, extreme form of a reactive glial cell proliferation and can cause difficulties in the differential diagnosis of intraocular tumors.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 33-year-old patient presented with a painful neovascular glaucoma and a solid intraocular mass. The left globe was subsequently enucleated. The fundus could not be visualized due to lens opacities and an incomplete occlusive membrane. A case of spontaneous corneal perforation occurred in a 32 year-old patient with AIDS who presented eyelid and conjunctival molluscum contagiosum. The mechanism of this perforation was discussed in light of data found in the literature. The rarety, severity and difficulty in diagnosing molluscum contagiosum are emphasized.

Nonocular melanoma rarely metastasizes to the orbit. We report the case of a melanoma presumably arising from an axillary lymph node sinus that metastasized to the left medial rectus muscle causing proptosis, diplopia, and reduced saccadic velocity measurements. The paper analyses late results after treatment of 629 patients with choroidal and ciliary body melanomas. The method of drawing up thorough tables of mortality allowed to receive indices of 5-year survival and lethality after enucleation and organ-preserving methods of treatment. Comparative assessment of effectiveness of enucleation and organ-preserving methods of treatment proves the advantage of the latter in case of small uveal melanomas in the plan of preserving the life, ability to work and professional qualification of the patients.

PURPOSE: The aim of this article is to report a case of uveal tuberculoma simulating an intraocular tumor in which the diagnosis was only possible by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) analysis.

The aim was to report my own experiences of the surgical treatment of ciliary body melanoma. 42 patients were treated by trasnscleral resection of melanoma between January 1995 and June 2001. Additional rutenium brachytherapy was performed in 29 cases. Intraoperative complications included bleeding (3 cases), vitreous loss (4) and retinal detachment (2).
