Feasibility of Amide Proton Transfer-Weighted Imaging at 3T for Renal Masses: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: To investigate the optimal B1,rms value of renal amide proton transfer-weighted (APTw) images and the reproducibility of this value, and to explore the utility of APT imaging of renal masses and kidney tissues. METHODS: APTw images with different B1,rms values were repeatedly recorded in 15 healthy volunteers to determine the optimal value. Two 4-point Likert scales (poor [1] to excellent [4]) were used to evaluate contour clarity and artifacts in masses and normal tissues. The APTw values of masses and normal tissues were then compared in evaluable images (contour clarity score >

An uncertainty-incorporated method for fast beam angle selection in intensity-modulated proton therapy.

AIM: We propose a novel metric called ψ - score to rank the Intensity Modulated Proton Therapy (IMPT) beams in the order of their optimality and robustness. The beams ranked based on this metric were accordingly chosen for IMPT optimization. The objective of this work is to study the effectiveness of the proposed method in various clinical cases. METHODS AND MATERIALS: We have used Pinnacle TPS (Philips Medical System V 16.2) for performing the optimization. To validate our approach, we have applied it in four clinical cases: Lung, Pancreas, Prostate+Node and Prostate. Basically, for all clin

Clinical Impact of Proton Beam Therapy for Postoperative Lymph Node Oligorecurrence of Esophageal Cancer.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Radiotherapy is a salvage therapy type for postoperative recurrence of esophageal cancer. Compared to conventional photon-based radiotherapy, proton beam therapy can reduce the irradiated dose to the surrounding organs, facilitating the management of patients who are unfit for radiotherapy. In this study, the outcomes and toxicity of proton beam therapy for postoperative lymph node oligorecurrence of esophageal cancer were investigated. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We retrospectively evaluated the clinical outcomes and toxicity of 13 sites in 11 patients treated with proton beam ther

Simulation study of protoacoustics as a real-time in-line dosimetry tool for FLASH proton therapy.

BACKGROUND: Applying ultra-high dose rates to radiation therapy, otherwise known as FLASH, has been shown to be just as effective while sparing more normal tissue compared to conventional radiation therapy. However, there is a need for a dosimeter that is able to detect such high instantaneous dose, particularly in vivo. To fulfill this need, protoacoustics is introduced, which is an in vivo range verification method with submillimeter accuracy. PURPOSE: The purpose of this work is to demonstrate the feasibility of using protoacoustics as a method of in vivo real-time monitoring during FLASH

Targeting ATP12A, a Nongastric Proton Pump α Subunit, for Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Treatment.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a pathological condition of unknown etiology that results from injury to the lung and an ensuing fibrotic response that leads to the thickening of the alveolar walls and obliteration of the alveolar space. The pathogenesis is not clear, and there are currently no effective therapies for IPF. Small airway disease and mucus accumulation are prominent features in IPF lungs, similar to cystic fibrosis lung disease. The ATP12A gene encodes the α-subunit of the nongastric H+, K+-ATPase, which functions to acidify the airway surface fluid and impairs mucociliary

Treatment Outcomes of Proton Beam Therapy for Esophageal Squamous Cell Carcinoma at a Single Institute.

Recently, proton beam therapy (PBT) has gathered attention for improving outcomes and reducing toxicities in various cancers; however, the evidence for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is lacking. Our study retrospectively evaluated the outcomes of PBT for ESCC patients at a single institute. The patients treated with PBT between November 2015 and February 2022 were included in the study, excluding those with distant metastases or those that had undertaken prior treatment for esophageal cancer (EC). The 3 year overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) rates were calcul

Omeprazole was safely reused in a rhabdomyolysis patient associated with proton pump inhibitors: A case report.

Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are commonly used in the clinical treatment of abnormal gastric acid secretion and gastric acid related diseases. There are disputes about blood purification and PPIs reuse in patients with PPIs-induced rhabdomyolysis. Herein we reported an 84-year-old woman with a 10-year history of coronary heart disease and gastric acid. After 18 days of omeprazole therapy, the blood myoglobin of the patient rose progressively. Laboratory examination confirmed rhabdomyolysis, and PPIs-induced rhabdomyolysis was considered. Atorvastatin was initially discontinued. Additionally,

Oral Disintegrating Tablets of Proton Pump Inhibitors for Chronic Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: An Update.

Oral disintegrating tablets (ODT) offer an attractive choice for Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) patients suffering from dysphagia. In chronic condition, GERD patient suffers from severe erosive esophagitis. Thus patients feel difficulty and pain during swallowing, which results in patient in-compliance toward medication of tablets or capsules- especially in geriatrics and pediatric patients. These symptoms of GERD patients have attracted the formulation scientists in improving the formulation methodology for such patients. Orally disintegrating tablets could increase the therapeutic im

The association between duration of and indications for proton pump inhibitor use and risk of gastric polyps.

OBJECTIVES: The development of fundic gland polyps (FGPs) is the most common side effect of long-term proton pump inhibitor (PPI) use; however, the effect of drug use characteristics and their impact on the risk of other gastric polyp development remain unclear. We aimed to identify the influence of PPI administration, as well as its duration and dose, in the development of gastric polyps. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted on consecutive patients who underwent gastroscopy between September 2017 and August 2019. Detailed characteristics of gastric polyps, Helicobacter pylori in

Propionic and valproic acids have an impact on bacteria viability, proton flux and ATPase activity.

Short-chain fatty acids like propionic (PPA) and valproic acids (VP) can alter gut microbiota, which is suggested to play a role in development of autism spectrum disorders (ASD). In this study we investigated the role of various concentrations of PPA and VP in gut enteric gram-negative Escherichia coli K12 and gram-positive Enterococcus hirae ATCC 9790 bacteria growth properties, ATPase activity and proton flux. The specific growth rate (µ) was 0.24 h-1 and 0.82 h-1 in E. coli and E. hirae, respectively. Different concentrations of PPA reduced the value of µ similarly in both strains. PPA aff

A Self-Disguised Nanospy for Improving Drug Delivery Efficiency via Decreasing Drug Protonation.

Nanoscale drug carriers play a crucial role in reducing side effects of chemotherapy drugs. However, the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) and the drug protonation after nanoparticles (NPs) burst release still limit the drug delivery efficiency. In this work, a self-disguised Nanospy is designed to overcome this problem. The Nanospy is composed of: i) poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid)-polyethylene glycol (PLGA-PEG) loading doxorubicin is the core structure of the Nanospy. ii) CD47 mimic peptides (CD47p) is linked to NPs which conveyed the "don't eat me" signal. iii) 4-(2-aminoethyl) benzenesulfo

Observation of proton-transfer-coupled spin transition by single-crystal neutron-diffraction measurement.

The application of single-crystal neutron diffraction (SCND) to observe proton-transfer phenomena in crystalline compounds exhibiting unusual protonation states or proton dynamics has garnered significant research interest in recent years. However, proton tautomerism, which results in different protonation states before and after proton transfer, has never been observed using the SCND technique. Thus, to observe the proton tautomerism phenomenon by SCND measurements, we developed an iron(II) complex that forms a large crystal and exhibits a proton-transfer-coupled spin transition (PCST). The p

Proton therapy and oral mucositis in oral & oropharyngeal cancers: outcomes, dosimetric and NTCP benefit.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM), is a common, debilitating, acute side effect of radiotherapy for oral cavity (OC) and oropharyngeal (OPx) cancers; technical innovations for reducing it are seldom discussed. Intensity-modulated-proton-therapy (IMPT) has been reported extensively for treating OPx cancers, and less frequently for OC cancers. We aim to quantify the reduction in the likelihood of RIOM in treating these 2 subsites with IMPT compared to Helical Tomotherapy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We report acute toxicities and early outcomes of 22 consecutive patients with OC a
