BACKGROUND: Recent epidemiology of Rift Valley fever (RVF) disease in Africa suggests growing frequency and expanding geographic range of small disease clusters in regions that previously had not reported the disease. We investigated factors associated with the phenomenon by characterising recent RVF disease events in East Africa.
METHODS: Data on 100 disease events (2008-2022) from Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania were obtained from public databases and institutions, and modelled against possible geoecological risk factors of occurrence including altitude, soil type, rainfall/precipitation, temper

BACKGROUND: Ambient temperatures exceeding 40 °C are projected to become common in many temperate climatic zones due to global warming. Therefore, understanding the health effects of continuous exposure to high ambient temperatures on populations living in hot climatic regions can help identify the limits of human tolerance.
OBJECTIVE: We studied the relationship between ambient temperature and non-accidental mortality in the hot desert city of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, between 2006 and 2015.
METHODS: We used a distributed lag nonlinear model to estimate the mortality-temperature association over

Adolescence is the period in which physical-activity habits either take root or quietly unravel, and in China crowded timetables and examination pressure make the second outcome unusually common. What separates the adolescents who keep exercising from those who drift away is therefore a question with real public-health stakes, and beliefs about whether athletic ability can be developed offer one promising but under-tested answer. Drawing on social cognitive theory and self-determination theory, we specified a moderated serial mediation model and examined it in 860 adolescents aged 12 to 18, sa

Background: Environmental degradation and climate-related territorial transformation are increasingly recognized as social determinants of adolescent mental health. However, empirical evidence on solastalgia among young people in the Global South remains limited. This study aimed to examine psychosocial, health-related, school-related, family, and territorial factors associated with solastalgia among school-attending adolescents in Colombia. Methods: A quantitative, cross-sectional analytical study was conducted between August 2025 and February 2026 with 1005 adolescents from three Colombian t

Waterborne illnesses, including those caused by Salmonella, are an increasing public health challenge, particularly in developing countries. Potential sources of salmonellosis include fruits and vegetables irrigated/treated with surface water, leading to human infections. Salmonella causes millions of gastroenteritis cases annually, but early detection through routine water quality surveillance is time-consuming, requires specialized equipment, and faces limitations, such as coverage gaps, delayed data, and poor accessibility. Climate change-driven extreme events such as floods and droughts fu

BACKGROUND: Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a neglected tropical vector-borne disease. Sand fly vectors (SF) and Leishmania spp parasites are sensitive to changes in weather conditions, rendering disease transmission susceptible to changes in local and global scale climatic patterns. Nevertheless, it is unclear how SF abundance is impacted by El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and how these changes might relate to changes in CL transmission.
METHODOLOGY AND FINDINGS: We studied association patterns between monthly time series, from January 2000 to December 2010, of: CL cases, rainfall and te

1. Models that predict organismal and population responses to climate change may be improved by considering ecological factors that affect species thermal tolerance. Species differences in microhabitat use can expose animals to diverse thermal selective environments at a given site and may cause sympatric species to evolve different thermal tolerances. 2. We tested the hypothesis that species differences in body size and microhabitat use (above- vs. below-ground activity) would correspond to differences in thermal tolerance (maximum critical temperatures: CTmax ). Thermal buffering effects of

Timing of blunt force trauma in human bone is a critical forensic issue, but there is limited knowledge on how different environmental conditions, the duration of postmortem interval (PMI), different bone types and different animal models influence fracture morphology. This study aims at evaluating the influence of the type of postmortem environment and the duration of the postmortem period on fracture morphology, for distinguishing perimortem from postmortem fractures on different types of long bones from different species. Fresh limb segments from pig and goat were sequentially left to decom

Estuaries are fragile environment that are most affected by climate change. One of the major consequences of climate change on estuarine processes is the enhancement in salt intrusion leading to higher salinity values. This has several implications on the estuarine sediment dynamics. Of the various factors that affect the flocculation of cohesive sediments, salinity and turbulence have been recognized as to have great significance. Many of the estuaries are contaminated with heavy metals, of which, the concentration of Iron (Fe (II)) are generally on the higher range. However, the influence of

Rift Valley fever is an emerging mosquito-borne disease that represents a threat to human and animal health. The exophilic and exophagic behavior of the two main vector in West Africa (Aedes vexans and Culex poicilipes), adverse events post-vaccination, and lack of treatment, render ineffective the disease control. Therefore it is essential to develop an information system that facilitates decision-making and the implementation of adaptation strategies. In East Africa, RVF outbreaks are linked with abnormally high rainfall, and can be predicted up to 5 months in advance by modeling approaches

Wildlife populations worldwide are increasingly exposed to climatic extremes, yet demographic mechanisms linking environmental variability to local extinction remain poorly understood. We evaluated the population dynamics of a degu (Octodon degus) population in central Chile over a 12-year period (2009-2020) encompassing a decade-long megadrought. Using capture-mark-recapture models, we estimated apparent survival, recruitment, and population growth rates and assessed their relationships with climatic and ecosystem variables. Population growth remained positive throughout most of the study per

Climatic drying and plant invasions are intensifying globally, yet their combined effects on soil fauna remain poorly understood. Soil nematodes are key components of belowground food webs, contributing to nutrient cycling, organic matter decomposition, and trophic energy transfer. Here, we used paired invaded and non-invaded plots across a natural dry-to-humid climatic gradient to examine how Xanthium strumarium L. invasion was associated with changes in soil nematode communities. Soil moisture and soil organic carbon were greater at more humid sites but were lower in invaded soils. Extractab

The distribution of vegetation across the Northern Hemisphere has been profoundly shaped by the climatic and geological history of the Cenozoic. An ancient paleotropical vegetation belt, once spanning the Northern Hemisphere, is hypothesized to have facilitated biotic exchange across regions during the early Cenozoic, before its eventual fragmentation and near-complete disappearance. We investigate the evolutionary history of this pattern using the fern subfamily Woodwardioideae (Blechnaceae)-a striking example of disjunction across the Northern Hemisphere. By integrating phylogenetic relation

BACKGROUND: Climate change poses significant risks to human health, at the same time healthcare systems are a large contributor to climate change. The NHS is regarded as a leader in the green health space, committing to achieving Net Zero by 2040, however little is known about how these policies are being implemented at the local level, or what governance approaches support effective climate action.
OBJECTIVE: This study examined 1) current adaptation and mitigation actions within London NHS healthcare trusts; 2) barriers and enablers shaping these actions; and 3) governance characteristics t

The Yellowstone geo-ecosystem has been the subject of much research, but the ecological history of the Yellowstone Plateau volcanic field and its iconic geyser basins is less known. In this investigation, paleoenvironmental analyses of sediment cores from lakes in Lower Geyser Basin were compared with regional records and paleoclimate model simulations to reconstruct the vegetation, wildfire, limnology, hydrothermal dynamics, and climate drivers since deglaciation, 15,000 to 14,000 years ago. Pollen data from Lower Geyser Basin lakes reveal the strong influence of infertile rhyolitic soils on

Climate-related distress in the Philippines may involve realistic fear, ecological grief, disaster trauma, disrupted meaning, and spiritual struggle, yet spiritual responses are neither uniformly protective nor harmful. This theory-building conceptual article develops a spiritual climate resilience framework integrating the meaning-making model with hope theory. The framework explains how ecological threat or loss may contribute to differentiated distress and meaning discrepancy, which are interpreted through spiritual appraisal and related to motivational, behavioral, and communal responses.

Air pollution generated by urbanization and industrialization poses a significant negative impact on public health. Particularly, fine particulate matter (PM2.5) has become one of the leading causes of lung cancer mortality worldwide. The relationship between air pollutants and lung cancer has aroused global widespread concerns. Currently, the spatial agglomeration dynamic of lung cancer incidence (LCI) has been seldom discussed, and the spatial heterogeneity of lung cancer's influential factors has been ignored. Moreover, it is still unclear whether different socioeconomic levels and climate
