Accurate full segmentation of organs-at-risk in head and neck cancer based on multimodal point cloud fusion.

Accurate segmentation of multiple organs is essential for the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck cancer. However, the intricate anatomical structure and dense organ distribution in the head and neck region pose significant challenges for existing automated segmentation models, which predominantly target single organs and rely on single-modality imaging. Achieving comprehensive, one-step segmentation of organs-at-risk (OARs) remains challenging. To this end, we propose a Point-cloud Matrix Fusion-based Segmentation Model (PMFM) that leverages an improved multi-modal data fusion strategy f

Radiogenomics and Artificial Intelligence Approaches Applied to Cardiac Computed Tomography Angiography and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance for Precision Medicine in Coronary Heart Disease: A Systematic Review.

The risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) clinical manifestations and patient management is estimated according to risk scores accounting multifactorial risk factors, thus failing to cover the individual cardiovascular risk. Technological improvements in the field of medical imaging, in particular, in cardiac computed tomography angiography and cardiac magnetic resonance protocols, laid the development of radiogenomics. Radiogenomics aims to integrate a huge number of imaging features and molecular profiles to identify optimal radiomic/biomarker signatures. In addition, supervised and unsupervi

Quantitative evaluation of breast density using a dual-energy technique on a digital breast tomosynthesis system.

PURPOSE: Although breast density is considered a strong risk factor of breast cancer, its quantitative assessment is difficult. To investigate a quantitative method of measuring breast density using dual-energy mammographic imaging with central digital breast tomosynthesis in physically uniform and nonuniform phantoms. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The dual-energy imaging unit used a tungsten anode and silver filter with 30 kVp for high-energy images and 20 kVp for low-energy images. Uniform glandular-equivalent phantoms were used to calibrate a dual-energy based decomposition algorithm. The first st

Imaging of the Eustachian tube and its function: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: The Eustachian tube is a complex and inaccessible structure, which maintains middle ear ventilation to facilitate transmission of sound from the tympanic membrane to the cochlea. A renewed interest in treatments for eustachian tube dysfunction has led to a demand for methods of imaging the Eustachian tube, and assessing tube opening non-invasively. This review aims to summarise the use of imaging in the anatomical assessment of the Eustachian tube, and to explore how radiological techniques can be used to assess tube function. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was p

Cardiac imaging: Part 2, normal, variant, and anomalous configurations of the coronary vasculature.

OBJECTIVE: Noninvasive imaging of the heart and coronary vasculature using CT and MRI is a new and exciting opportunity for radiologists. The purpose of this pictorial essay is to review normal and variant anatomy of the coronary arteries and of several coronary anomalies that may be clinically significant. The coronary veins and artifacts simulating disease will also be briefly covered. This article will help radiologists learn and review normal coronary anatomy, normal variants, and coronary anomalies and recognize pitfalls, such as coronary veins and artifacts, that may be confusing when fi

Investigation into the optimal linear time-invariant lag correction for radar artifact removal.

PURPOSE: Detector lag, or residual signal, in amorphous silicon (a-Si) flat-panel (FP) detectors can cause significant shading artifacts in cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) reconstructions. To date, most correction models have assumed a linear, time-invariant (LTI) model and lag is corrected by deconvolution with an impulse response function (IRF). However, there are many ways to determine the IRF. The purpose of this work is to better understand detector lag in the Varian 4030CB FP and to identify the IRF measurement technique that best removes the CBCT shading artifact. METHODS: We inve

Sectional anatomic and computed tomography features of the nasal and oral cavities of the one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius).

The purpose of the study was to provide a description of normal cross-sectional anatomy of the camel nasal and oral cavities using computed tomography (CT) and macroscopic cross-sections. Transverse images of two isolated camel cadaver heads were obtained by an axial CT equipment. Computed tomography scans were processed with a detailed algorithm using nasal and soft tissue windows settings and compared with the corresponding frozen cross-sections of the heads, to assist in the accurate identification of nasal and oral structures. In our study, nasal window provided excellent anatomic details

Imaging of Pericardial Disease.

Although the pericardium is simply a 2-layered membrane enveloping the heart and great vessels, there are numerous anatomic variations, congenital anomalies, and pathologic conditions that can occur. Although echocardiography is most often the first imaging modality used to assess the pericardium, computed tomography and MR imaging are frequently being used to aid in diagnosis and assess response to therapy. Therefore, detailed knowledge of the pericardium in both its normal and diseased states is important to best direct patient care and potentially improve patient outcomes.

Vision processing for realtime 3-D data acquisition based on coded structured light.

Structured light vision systems have been successfully used for accurate measurement of 3-D surfaces in computer vision. However, their applications are mainly limited to scanning stationary objects so far since tens of images have to be captured for recovering one 3-D scene. This paper presents an idea for real-time acquisition of 3-D surface data by a specially coded vision system. To achieve 3-D measurement for a dynamic scene, the data acquisition must be performed with only a single image. A principle of uniquely color-encoded pattern projection is proposed to design a color matrix for im

Implementation of biologically conformal radiation therapy (BCRT) in an algorithmic segmentation-based inverse planning approach.

The development of new biological imaging technologies offers the opportunity to further individualize radiotherapy. Biologically conformal radiation therapy (BCRT) implies the use of the spatial distribution of one or more radiobiological parameters to guide the IMRT dose prescription. Our aim was to implement BCRT in an algorithmic segmentation-based planning approach. A biology-based segmentation tool was developed to generate initial beam segments that reflect the biological signal intensity pattern. The weights and shapes of the initial segments are optimized by means of an objective func

Post hoc estimation of a quantitative restriction spectrum imaging biomarker for prostate cancer detection using conventional MRI.

BACKGROUND: Multiparametric MRI is useful for early detection of clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa), but its standard apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) has limited utility as a quantitative metric for automated, patient-level detection of csPCa. Restriction spectrum imaging (RSI), an advanced diffusion technique, yields a quantitative biomarker (RSIrs) that improves csPCa detection. RSIrs is typically calculated from a dedicated multi-b-value acquisition. RSIrs estimated from conventional MRI has not been studied. PURPOSE: To evaluate the accuracy and validity of RSI metrics es

Computed tomography guided thoracoscopic segmentectomy for lung cancer with variant bronchus.

Lung segmentectomy with bronchial variation has rarely been reported. We report the case of a lung cancer patient with variant anatomy of the right upper lobe bronchus.Thoracoscopic posterior segmentectomy of the right upper lobe was performed. Variant bronchus and related blood vessels were confirmed preoperatively by three-dimensional multidetector computed tomography (3D-MDCT), which facilitated visualization of the patient's anatomy during surgery.

Graph-based prototype inverse-projection for identifying cortical sulcal pattern abnormalities in congenital heart disease.

Examining the altered arrangement and patterning of sulcal folds offers insights into the mechanisms of neurodevelopmental differences in psychiatric and neurological disorders. Previous sulcal pattern analysis used spectral graph matching of sulcal pit-based graph structures to assess deviations from normative sulcal patterns. However, challenges exist, including the absence of a standard criterion for defining a typical reference set, time-consuming cost of graph matching, user-defined feature weight sets, and assumptions about uniform node distribution. We developed a deep learning-based su

Diagnosing Ankylosing Spondylitis via Architecture-Modified ResNet and Combined Conventional Magnetic Resonance Imagery.

Ankylosing spondylitis (AS), a lifelong inflammatory disease, leads to fusion of vertebrae and sacroiliac joints (SIJs) if undiagnosed. Conventional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), e.g., T1w/T2w, is the diagnostic modality of choice for AS. However, computed tomography (CT)-a second-line modality-offers higher specificity because CT differentiates AS-relevant bony erosions/lesions better than MRI. We wished to ascertain whether MRI could be used to train/optimize convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for AS classification and which type of conventional MRI may dominate. We extracted 534 AS an

Automated 3D Cobb Angle Measurement Using U-Net in CT Images of Preoperative Scoliosis Patients.

To propose a deep learning framework "SpineCurve-net" for automated measuring the 3D Cobb angles from computed tomography (CT) images of presurgical scoliosis patients. A total of 116 scoliosis patients were analyzed, divided into a training set of 89 patients (average age 32.4 ± 24.5 years) and a validation set of 27 patients (average age 17.3 ± 5.8 years). Vertebral identification and curve fitting were achieved through U-net and NURBS-net and resulted in a Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline (NURBS) curve of the spine. The 3D Cobb angles were measured in two ways: the predicted 3D Cobb angle (PRE

High mean entropy calculated from cardiac MRI texture analysis is associated with antitachycardia pacing failure.

BACKGROUND: Antitachycardia pacing (ATP), which may avoid unnecessary implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) shocks, does not always terminate ventricular arrhythmias (VAs). Mean entropy calculated using cardiac magnetic resonance texture analysis (CMR-TA) has been shown to predict appropriate ICD therapy. We examined whether scar heterogeneity, quantified by mean entropy, is associated with ATP failure and explore potential mechanisms using computer modeling. METHODS: A subanalysis of 114 patients undergoing CMR-TA where the primary endpoint was delivery of appropriate ICD therapy (ATP
