[Canine visceral leishmaniasis in northeast Brazil: epidemiological aspects].

In a rural area of Northeast Brazil, the relatively high serological infection by Leishmania in dogs, the lack of classical vector Lutzomyia longipalpis and of American Visceral Leishmaniasis cases in human beings and the observation of Leishmania in ticks collected in infected dogs suggest that ticks may be responsible for the transmission between dogs.

The distribution and ecological 'preferences' of the tick Amblyomma cajennense (Acari: Ixodidae), an ectoparasite of humans and other mammals in the Americas.

The distribution and ecological 'preferences', in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions, of the prominent, pathogen-carrying tick Amblyomma cajennense (Fabricius) were reviewed, on the basis of the published literature, satellite imagery, and the examination of several tick collections. The tick has been collected from the southern U.S.A. (Texas and Florida) to northern Argentina, but is probably absent from Uruguay and southern Brazil (the few records of the species in these areas probably represent mis-identifications). The ecological conditions prevailing in the areas where the tick has been

Borreliae in Ixodes ricinus ticks feeding on humans.

A total of 298 Ixodes ricinus (L.) ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) feeding on humans in the Czech Republic were tested for borreliae (Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato) by darkfield microscopy between 1997 and 2003. A majority (68%) of the supplied I. ricinus ticks were nymphs, 25% were females and 7% were larvae. Overall, 20% of 74 examined females and 9% of 203 examined nymphs (but none of 21 examined larvae) were infected with borreliae. The proportion of ticks with a high infection load (>100 spirochetes) was 4% in females and 2% in nymphal I. ricinus. During the year, the highest numbers and propor

Cultivation of an ovine strain of Ehrlichia phagocytophila in tick cell cultures.

Ehrlichia phagocytophila (previously known as Cytoecetes phagocytophila) which causes tick-borne fever (TBF) in sheep and pasture fever in cattle in the UK and mainland Europe is transmitted by the temperate hard tick Ixodes ricinus. The disease in sheep is characterized by fever, leucopenia and immunosuppression. Studies on the pathogenesis and other aspects of the disease have been hampered because the organism has not been cultivated in continuous or primary cell culture systems. This paper describes the first successful cultivation of a European isolate of E. phagocytophila in two continuo

Isolation and preliminary characterization of a large Babesia sp. from sheep and goats in the eastern part of Gansu Province, China.

Two species of Babesia were isolated from naturally infected sheep in the eastern part of Gansu province. One of the species was identified as B. ovis, while the another one seems as yet to be an unidentified Babesia species. The latter could be transmitted transovarially by Haemaphysalis longicornis. It was shown that larvae and nymphs transmit the organism to sheep and goats with a prepatent period of 5-28 days. As the carrier period of B. ovis is longer than that of the larger species and the prepatent period of the larger Babesia is shorter than that of B. ovis, it was possible to isolate

The intravenous and oral pharmacokinetics of afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime when used as a combination chewable parasiticide for dogs.

The pharmacokinetics of afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime (A3 and A4 forms) in dogs were evaluated following the oral administration of NexGard Spectra® (Merial), a fixed combination chewable formulation of these two active pharmaceutical ingredients. Absorption of actives was rapid at levels that provide the minimum effective doses of 2.5 mg/kg and 0.5 mg/kg of afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime, respectively. The time to maximum afoxolaner plasma concentrations (tmax ) was 2-4 h. The milbemycin tmax was 1-2 h. The terminal plasma half-life (t1/2 ) and the oral bioavailability were 14 ± 3 days and

Genomic Study of Babesia bovis Infection Level and Its Association With Tick Count in Hereford and Braford Cattle.

Bovine babesiosis is a tick-borne disease caused by intraerythrocytic protozoa and leads to substantial economic losses for the livestock industry throughout the world. Babesia bovis is considered the most pathogenic species, which causes bovine babesiosis in Brazil. Genomic data could be used to evaluate the viability of improving resistance against B. bovis infection level (IB) through genomic selection, and, for that, knowledge of genetic parameters is needed. Furthermore, genome-wide association studies (GWAS) could be conducted to provide a better understanding of the genetic basis of the

Effects of white-tailed deer habitat use preferences on southern cattle fever tick eradication: simulating impact on "pasture vacation" strategies.

BACKGROUND: Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus (southern cattle fever tick; SCFT), collectively known as cattle-fever ticks (CFTs), are vectors of protozoal parasites (Babesia bigemina and Babesia bovis) that cause bovine babesiosis (also known as cattle fever). One traditional strategy for CFT eradication involves the implementation of a "pasture vacation," which involves removing cattle (Bos taurus) from an infested pasture for an extended period of time. However, vacated pastures are often inhabited by wildlife hosts, such as white-tailed deer (WTD;

Tick-borne pathogens infecting urban domestic dogs from a highland swamp area from Paraíba, northeastern Brazil.

Tick-borne diseases represent important illnesses in dogs, but information about their occurrence in some regions of northeastern Brazil is still limited. Considering the possible differences in the distribution of these agents among the various regions of the country, this study aimed to investigate the prevalence of Babesia vogeli, Ehrlichia canis, Hepatozoon spp., and Borrelia spp., as well as factors associated with these infections in urban dogs from the Brejo Paraibano microregion. To this end, canine blood samples were analyzed using TaqMan real-time PCR protocols or conventional PCR. O

Rickettsia and relapsing fever Borrelia in Alectorobius kelleyi (Ixodida: Argasidae) from peri domestic bats in the northeastern United States.

The soft ticks (Argasidae) are known vectors of human and animal pathogens around the globe and are relatively understudied. Our aim was to assess the presence of Rickettsia and Borrelia bacteria in Alectorobius kelleyi (Argasidae) parasitizing synanthropic bats in the highly urbanized northeastern United States. By collaborating with parasitologists, bat scientists and wildlife rehabilitators we were successful in obtaining A. kelleyi from five states. Since Argasid larvae will attach to their hosts for many days, most A. kelleyi examined (92%) were larvae collected from sick or injured big b

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and spotted fever group rickettsiae in small rodents and attached ticks in the Northern Apennines, Italy.

Ticks and ear biopsies were collected from wild small rodents in 2011 and 2012 in the northern Apennines (Italy), up to 1650 m above sea level. Apodemus spp. (n = 83) and Myodes glareolus (n = 22) were infested by Ixodes ricinus (192 larvae and two nymphs), Dermacentor marginatus (179 larvae and 29 nymphs), and Ixodes trianguliceps (three larvae and two nymphs). We detected several Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s.l.) genospecies (B. afzelii, B. burgdorferi sensu stricto, B. garinii, B. lusitaniae, B. valaisiana) in I. ricinus and skin biopsies. The most common genospecies found in I. ricinu

Stray dog population health in Jodhpur, India in the wake of an animal birth control (ABC) program.

Our objectives were to (1) estimate the prevalence of various health indices in the stray dog population in Jodhpur, India and (2) determine if there was an association between an animal birth control (ABC) program and the prevalence of these health indices in this population. A prevalence survey of 323 sexually intact stray dogs >3 months caught from the streets of Jodhpur from September to November, 2005 indicated that low body condition score (70%), skin conditions (69%) and tick infestation (68%) were the most common health problems in this population. An observational study of 888 stray d

[Tick-borne rickettsioses in the Americas: clinical and epidemiological advances, and diagnostic challenges].

Rickettsioses are a group of zoonotic diseases caused by strict intracellular bacteria of the genus Rickettsia and Orientia which belong to the Rickettsiaceae family. Their ecology is influenced by environmental factors and the presence of specific vectors that determine the establishment and epidemiology in different world regions. In America, during the 20 th century, only three of these diseases were recognized: Rocky Mountain spotted fever, epidemic typhus and endemic typhus. However, since 2000, more than 10 different species that had previously been unknown in this continent have been de

Visualization of Central European tick-borne encephalitis infection in fatal human cases.

Central European tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is caused by a flavivirus vectored by the Ixodes ricinus tick. In severe infections, TBE presents as (myelo)meningoencephalitis with considerable mortality. Characteristic neuropathologic changes feature a multinodular to patchy polioencephalomyelitis accentuated in spinal cord, brainstem, and cerebellum. Visualization of viral infection by immunohistochemistry has not yet been achieved. We analyzed immunohistochemically the distribution of viral antigens and its correlation with neuropathologic changes, serological data, and disease duration in 2

Perceptions of health-related quality of life of men and women living with coeliac disease.

BACKGROUND: A central question in evolutionary parasitology is to what extent ecology impacts patterns of parasitism in wild host populations. In this study, we aim to disentangle factors influencing the risk of parasite exposure by exploring the impact of sleeping site ecology on infection with ectoparasites and vector-borne hemoparasites in two sympatric primates endemic to Madagascar. Both species live in the same dry deciduous forest of northwestern Madagascar and cope with the same climatic constraints, they are arboreal, nocturnal, cat-sized and pair-living but differ prominently in slee
