Protective effect of esculentoside A on radiation-induced dermatitis and fibrosis.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of esculentoside A (EsA) on radiation-induced cutaneous and fibrovascular toxicity and its possible molecular mechanisms, both in vivo and in vitro. METHODS AND MATERIALS: Mice received drug intervention 18 hours before 30 Gy to the right hind leg. Alterations in several cytokines expressed in skin tissue 2 days after irradiation were determined by ELISA. Early skin toxicity was evaluated 3 to 4 weeks after irradiation by skin scoring, and both tissue contraction and expression of TGF-beta1 were determined for soft-tissue fibrosis 3 months after irradiation.

A case of radiation recall mucositis associated with docetaxel.

BACKGROUND: Radiation recall reactions, in particular dermatitis, are well documented in the literature. However, radiation recall mucositis is a rare clinical phenomenon. METHODS: We report a case of a 45-year-old man diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of the base of tongue. He was treated with surgery followed by chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Several months after completing treatment, he had a recurrence develop outside of the previously irradiated field. He was offered radiation therapy concurrent with docetaxel as salvage therapy. RESULTS: During salvage therapy, acute recall m

Differentiation state of skin fibroblast cultures versus risk of subcutaneous fibrosis after radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There is increasing evidence for patient-to-patient variation in the response of normal tissue to radiotherapy. Recently, it has been suggested that accumulation of functional fibrocytes may be a key step in the development of radiation-induced fibrosis. Therefore, we have examined a possible relationship between the differentiation state of untreated fibroblasts and the risk of radiation-induced subcutaneous fibrosis in individual patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We used skin fibroblast cultures isolated from eight postmastectomy radiotherapy patients whose individual

[Reaction of the laryngeal mucosa and skin of the neck to the combined use of irradiation, hyperthermia and chemotherapy in laryngeal cancer].

Reactions of the laryngeal and neck skin mucosa were studied in 93 laryngeal cancer patients on combined therapy including hyperthermia. Patients in the control groups received no local hyperthermia. Reactions on the laryngeal mucosa (hyperemia, insular and confluent epitheliitis) were observed in all the patients; in patients receiving chemotherapy they were more noticeable. In patients receiving local hyperthermia these reactions appeared somewhat later and were less noticeable and not repeated. Skin reactions correlated only with a radiation dose and did not depend on chemotherapy and hyper

RhFGF21 protects the skin from UVB irradiation in diabetic mice through the inhibition of epidermal cell apoptosis and macrophage-mediated inflammation via the SIRT1 signaling pathway.

BACKGROUND: Ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation can damage skin tissue. Diabetes aggravates skin lesions. Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) is significantly involved in exerting protective effects and facilitating tissue repair. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the impact of recombinant human FGF21 (rhFGF21) on diabetic skin affected by UVB damage. METHODS: UVB irradiation (270 mJ/cm2) was administered to diabetic mice for 5 consecutive days to establish UVB-irradiated skin injury, and rhFGF21 was administered daily after irradiation. Human immortalized keratinocytes (HaCaT) and mouse

Efficacy of radiation dose reduction due to real-time monitoring and visualization of peak skin dose during coronary angiography and percutaneous coronary intervention.

OBJECTIVES: This study assessed that the use of real-time monitoring and visualization of peak skin dose could reduce radiation dose during coronary angiography (CAG) and percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). BACKGROUND: Exposure to ionizing radiation has dose related effects including skin damage. Reducing the radiation exposure is important during CAG and PCI. The skin dose-tracking system (DTS) has a real-time monitor of radiation peak skin dose. METHODS: A total of 323 consecutive patients who underwent CAG and PCI between September 2014 and June 2015 were enrolled. Patients were cla

Genetic susceptibility to cutaneous radiation injury.

The use of ionizing radiation is critical to cancer treatment and fluoroscopic procedures. However, despite efforts to minimize total radiation dose, many patients experience toxic cutaneous side-effects of ionizing radiation, ranging from mild erythema to subcutaneous fibrosis, telangiectasia formation, and ulceration. Extent of injury is highly variable among patients. Studying the genetic determinants of radiation injury can help develop protocols to reduce radiation toxicity, as well as drive research into effective modulators of the genes and gene products associated with radiation injury

Using a thermoluminescent dosimeter to evaluate the location reliability of the highest-skin dose area detected by treatment planning in radiotherapy for breast cancer.

Acute skin reaction during adjuvant radiotherapy for breast cancer is an inevitable process, and its severity is related to the skin dose. A high-skin dose area can be speculated based on the isodose distribution shown on a treatment planning. To determine whether treatment planning can reflect high-skin dose location, 80 patients were collected and their skin doses in different areas were measured using a thermoluminescent dosimeter to locate the highest-skin dose area in each patient. We determined whether the skin dose is consistent with the highest-dose area estimated by the treatment plan

Stereotactic body radiation therapy for early stage non-small cell lung cancer: results of a prospective trial.

Patients affected with early stage (IA-IB) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), deemed medically inoperable, are usually treated by conventional 3D-CRT, with poor results in terms of local tumour control and survival. Hypofractionated stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) appears to be a valid alternative option, with high rates of local control and promising survival rates according to recent reported series. We herein report the final results of a prospective phase II trial of SBRT in 62 stage I NSCLC patients, homogeneously treated with three fractions of 15Gy each, given every other da

Involvement of histamine released from mast cells in acute radiation dermatitis in mice.

A possible involvement of histamine in acute radiation dermatitis in mice was investigated. The dose of 40 Gy of gamma irradiation induced erythema and edema in C57BL/6 mice treated with vehicle. However, in C57BL/6 mice treated with chlorpheniramine and WBB6F1-W/Wv mice, erythema and edema were not observed. In all of these mice, epilation and dry desquamation were induced, but bepotastine significantly reduced the extent of these areas. These results suggest that gamma irradiation-induced erythema and edema were caused by histamine released from mast cells via histamine H1 receptor, and epil

The internal mammary artery perforator flap: an anatomical study and a case report.

The anatomic basis for the internal artery mammary perforator (IMAP) flap is described in this cadaveric study, together with a clinical case report. The IMAP flap is based on a single or double perforator of the internal mammary artery that is included in the pedicle for added length. It provides a very useful source of local tissue with skin of good texture and color for head and neck reconstruction and, being muscle free, is thin. With preservation of the anterior cutaneous branch of the intercostal nerve, the flap has the potential to be sensate. A large area can be covered, particularly i

Real-time measurement of radiation exposure to patients during diagnostic coronary angiography and percutaneous interventional procedures.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to accurately assess the radiation exposure received by patients during cardiac catheterization in a large sample representative of the current state of practice in cardiac angiography. BACKGROUND: Radiation exposure to patients and laboratory staff has been recognized as a necessary hazard in coronary angiography. The effects on x-ray exposure of the increased complexity of coronary angiographic procedures and, in particular, the increasing use of coronary artery stenting, have not been adequately addressed in previous studies. METHODS: X-ray exposure m
