'The climate emergency is also a health emergency' (England 2024). Climate change directly impacts the health of the human population through events such as earthquakes, flooding, heatwaves and drought, which increase the risk of injury, displacement, disruption of food supplies, infectious diseases and mental ill health (England 2024; Lenzen et al. 2020; Tennison et al. 2021; The Lancet Respiratory Medicine 2023). The impact on population health of these climate events, alongside indirect health consequences such as increased prevalence of respiratory conditions due to air pollution, places a

Rising organic matter concentrations in surface waters in many Nordic countries require current drinking water treatment processes to be adapted. Accordingly, the use of a novel nanofiltration (NF) membrane was studied during a nine month period in pilot scale at a large drinking water treatment plant in Stockholm, Sweden. A chemically resistant hollow-fibre NF membrane was fed with full scale process water from a rapid sand filter after aluminum sulfate coagulation. The combined coagulation and NF process removed more than 90% of the incoming lake water dissolved organic carbon (DOC) (8.7 mg

The reduction of synthetic fungicides in agriculture is necessary to guarantee a sustainable production that protects the environment and consumers' health. Downy mildew caused by the oomycete Plasmopara viticola is the major pathogen in viticulture worldwide and responsible for up to 60% of pesticide treatments. Alternatives to reduce fungicides are thus utterly needed to ensure sustainable vineyard-ecosystems, consumer health and public acceptance. Essential oils (EOs) are amongst the most promising natural plant protection alternatives and have shown their antibacterial, antiviral and antif

Phenomenology since Husserl has always had a problematic relationship with empirical science. In its early articulations, there was Husserl's rejection of 'the scientific attitude', Merleau-Ponty's distancing of the scientifically-objectified self, and Heidegger's critique of modern science. These suggest an antipathy to science and to its methods of explaining the natural world. Recent developments in neuroscience have opened new opportunities for an engagement between phenomenology and cognitive science and through this, a re-thinking of science and its hidden assumptions more generally. Thi

Concentrations of heavy metal residues in the environment are increasing due to human activity and climate change. Iron is one of the most elements that increased in the environment, as a byproduct of industrial activities, fertilizers, and mining, leading to its deposition in the soil and subsequent transfer to plants and groundwater. In addition, iron is available as over the counter drug without prescriptions, and reported as the second common overdose drug during pregnancy. Iron poisoning affects the cells and tissues, and accumulated iron in lungs is risk and causes health problems, hemat

The timing of biological events for wildlife species reflects and influences ecological and evolutionary processes and helps guide management actions to meet conservation objectives. Climate change may cause phenological shifts across trophic levels and ecosystems, which can have broad ecological impacts. Shifts may also result in mistiming between management practices based on historical conditions and current biological events, reducing the effectiveness of natural resource management and conservation efforts. We analyzed nesting phenology patterns over recent decades across North America fo

Passive thermal management coatings are pivotal for energy efficiency; however, their practical implementation is often hampered by the inherent porosity of insulating fillers, which compromises barrier integrity and renders substrates vulnerable to environmental corrosion. This study aims to develop an epoxy-based passive cooling coating that decouples the highly porous internal structure from surface permeability. By utilizing a water-induced phase inversion (WIPI) process to form an asymmetric single-layer structure, the coating simultaneously integrates thermal insulation, broadband solar

The increasing frequency of extreme weather events driven by global climate change has intensified icing-related challenges across critical infrastructure, including transportation, energy systems, and aerospace applications. Conventional anti-/de-icing technologies are often limited by high energy consumption, operational inefficiency, and environmental concerns, underscoring the urgent need for more sustainable solutions. Herein, we define key terms: 'icephobic' materials passively inhibit ice formation or adhesion; 'anti-icing' refers to preventing ice accretion, while 'de-icing' involves r

Leishmaniasis, is a neglected tropical disease of global importance with rising incidence due to climate change, limited therapeutic options, and increasing drug resistance. Novel strategies targeting parasite biology are urgently needed. In this study, we propose that the functionality and regulation of the parasite's sole SUMO-specific protease, poorly understood to date, represent a tractable biological target. Using an integrated approach combining bioinformatics, biochemical assays, SUMOylation reconstitution, proteomics, and infection models, we characterised the localisation, enzymatic

The intertidal zone represents a dynamic interface between terrestrial and marine ecosystems, where habitat heterogeneity plays a crucial role in shaping the structure of macrobenthic communities and ecosystem functioning. Traditional taxonomic metrics describe species composition but offer limited insight into how organisms contribute to key processes such as bioturbation, nutrient cycling, and sediment restructuring. Trait-based approaches overcome this limitation by directly linking organismal attributes to ecosystem functions, providing earlier and more mechanistic indicators of ecological

Over the past three decades, the Tapajós River Basin, Brazilian Amazon, has become a major setting for investigating chronic environmental mercury (Hg) exposure, predominantly associated with dietary methylmercury (MeHg) intake through fish consumption. This critical review synthesizes Hg research conducted between 1990 and 2026, tracing scientific progress from contamination sources to human exposure, health effects, biological susceptibility, and emerging environmental health challenges. Early studies identified artisanal and small-scale gold mining, the remobilization of legacy Hg through b

BACKGROUND: Chronic lower respiratory diseases complicated by respiratory failure as a multiple cause of death, denoted as RF-CLRD, represent a critical public health challenge with significant spatial heterogeneity across the United States. Although bioclimatic factors, air pollution, and social vulnerability are known determinants of respiratory health, traditional global models assume these risk factors operate uniformly across space, obscuring their spatial non-stationarity and region-specific impacts.
METHODS: We utilized county-level data from the contiguous United States (2010-2019) to

PURPOSE: Young nurses represent the primary workforce for the future of the nursing industry. However, they often experience a heightened sense of overqualification, which can easily lead to silence behavior, negatively impacting personal well-being, organizational development, and the quality of nursing care. The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between perceived overqualification and silence behavior among young nurses, as well as the mediating role of surface acting and the moderating role of perceived organizational support.
METHOD: The Scale of Perceived Overqualifica

BACKGROUND: Foraging rates directly influence animals' energetic intake and expenditure and are thus linked to body condition and the ability to survive and reproduce. Further, understanding the underlying processes driving a species' behaviour and habitat use is important as changes in behaviour could result from changes in environmental conditions.
METHODS: In this study, the dives of Saimaa ringed seals (Pusa hispida saimensis) were classified for the first time using hidden Markov models and telemetry data collected on individual dives, and the behavioural states of the diving seals were

BACKGROUND: Cyanobacteria of the genera Synechocystis and Synechococcus have emerged as promising platforms for metabolic engineering endeavors aimed at converting carbon dioxide into valuable fuels and chemicals, thus addressing the pressing energy demand and mitigating global climate change. Notably, Synechocystis sp. strain PCC 6803 (Synechocystis) has been engineered to produce isobutanol (IB) and 3-methyl-1-butanol (3M1B) via heterologous expression of α-ketoisovalerate decarboxylase (Kivd). Despite these advances, the achieved IB/3M1B titers remain low. CRISPR interference (CRISPRi), an

Clouds are important physicochemical processors of atmospheric pollutants. Major contributors to secondary sulfate, clouds also provide media for the production and processing of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Sulfate and organic compounds often dominate particulate mass, and the accurate representation of their important production and loss pathways in models is necessary to effectively address the adverse health, ecosystem, and climate effects associated with elevated particulate concentrations. In this study we investigate the impacts of an extended cloud-chemistry scheme on predictions o

Growing global energy consumption and climate challenges have emphasized the need for biotechnology-based methods to synthesize valuable chemicals. Biological chain elongation (CE) shows great potential for decarbonization by producing valuable biochemicals - specifically medium-chain fatty acids (MCFAs) - from waste streams containing simple short-chain chemical building blocks like acetic acid and ethanol. However, one of the key parameters that impacts the commercial viability of CE, hence its integration in sustainable chemical manufacturing, is the volumetric productivity. In this study,

Artificial snowing is a process that allows ski operators adapt to snow scarcity due to climate change while raising environmental and public health concerns about the role it plays in environmental dissemination of pollutants, but studies addressing this question are still scarce. This study aimed to fill this gap in understanding the role of artificial snowmaking in dissemination of antibiotics, bacterial contaminants, antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) and genetic determinants (ARGs) thereof. Technical snow and water used for its production were examined from 11 ski stations located in fou

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is a re-emerging zoonosis with global distribution. In India, it remains common but often neglected. In Rajasthan, where agriculture is prevalent, frequent contact with infected animals such as goats, sheep, and cattle leads to brucellosis-like clinical symptoms. This study aims to determine the seroprevalence of brucellosis in patients presenting with PUO (Pyrexia of Unknown Origin).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study was conducted on 170 suspected PUO patients from January 2019 to December 2019 in Western Rajasthan to detect the seropreva

Adequate revegetation of abandoned farmland acts as a defence against desertification and soil loss, and can help remove carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, thereby playing an important role in regulating regional climate change. Legume, a nitrogen-fixation species, which could effectively improve vegetation coverage to control soil erosion, was widely used for revegetation. However, the dynamics of soil and plant development after legume introduction on abandoned farmland remain unclear. A 16-year in situ experiment including three treatments, natural abandonment (fallow), planting of alfalfa (
