Sporotrichosis is uncommon in Canadian urban centers. Lymphocutaneous and fixed cutaneous are the most common cutaneous forms of the disease, typically seen in the upper extremity in adult patients. History usually reveals a puncture injury contaminated with soil. Lesions are refractory to commonly used antibiotics. Cultures of biopsy specimens reliably grow the fungus Sporothrix schenkii. First line treatment is oral potassium iodide. We have reviewed a series of 7 cases from various Toronto teaching hospitals and compared them to the world literature.

Glues based on cyanoacrylates are widely used as contact adhesives for metal, glass, rubber, plastics and textiles, as well for biological materials, including binding tissues and sealing wounds in surgery. In this paper, an apprentice cobbler with an occupational allergic contact dermatitis from an ethyl cyanoacrylate glue, in which the major monomer was shown to be the sensitizer, is reported. OBJECTIVE: To report 10 children younger than 10 years of age with benign cutaneous polyarteritis nodosa (BCPAN).
METHODS: Ten children aged 1.25-10 years (mean 4.7 years; M:F = 7:3) were admitted with an unusual vasculitis. The clinical features, laboratory investigations, treatment and follow up data were analysed.

5 patients with dermatitis or stomatitis related to the use of orthodontic appliances are described. All the patients were patch tested with the European standard series. One had a ++ reaction to potassium dichromate, one a ++ reaction to nickel, and the remaining 3 no positive patch tests. 3 of the patients had recurrent vesicular hand eczema, which flared after oral challenge with 1 of the metals used in their orthodontic appliances. 2 of these 3 patients had negative patch tests. The dermatitis of 4 of the 5 patients cleared completely upon the removal of their metal orthodontic appliances

A family with five members who have variable findings of leuconychia, knuckle pads, hearing loss, and palmoplantar hyperkeratosis is described. The findings in these subjects are compared with those noted in previously reported patients with Bart-Pumphrey syndrome. The range of disorders which include knuckle pads as part of the phenotype is reviewed.

Kathon is a biocide consisting of a mixture of two isothiazolinone derivatives (5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one and 2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one) in an approximate ratio of 3:1, respectively, and with MgCl2 and Mg(NO3)2 present as stabilizers. The isothiazolinones are marketed under several brand names, and the concentration of the active ingredient varies according to their intended application. Patch testing is valuable for the management of most forms of hand eczema; it tends to be diagnostically useful, however, only in the nonendogenous forms. Historical and morphologic clues that distinguish hand eczema of endogenous from that of exogenous causes can increase the yield of valuable information from patch testing. Knowledge of the occupations at risk for skin disease and the time required for irritant and allergic contact dermatitis to develop will improve history taking--the key to suspecting an occupational component.

Of 545 consecutive contact dermatitis clinic patients, 271 (49.7%) were women, 29 (10.7%) of whom had hand dermatitis alone. 17 (58.6%) of these hand cases were allergic, the main sensitizers being nickel and essential oils in oranges. Dress makers were mostly affected by nickel, while orange sellers and peelers were positive to orange peel, fragrance mix, balsam of Peru and formaldehyde in varying combinations. 8 (27.6%) of the hand cases were due to irritants and wet jobs, and possibly to allergens not tested. 24 (83%) of the hand cases were occupational. The difference between medical and social prognosis in hand eczema is stressed. Rehabilitation may be a fashionable word, but a change of job may result in a lower social standing and the eczema may persist. Job change should never be considered unless extensive patch testing has been performed. The decision also depends on age, nature of allergen, actual trade and occupation, a personal history of atopy and some personal factors. Some guidelines are given.

Pyoderma gangrenosum, an uncommon disorder characterized by necrosis and noninfective skin ulcerations, was found in a patient who presented with an apparent hand infection. Cultures of the purulent material showed no growth. The treatment of choice was large doses of steroids and control of his ulcerative colitis. No similar case could be found in the literature.
