We have previously shown that the increase in muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA) to contracting muscle during sustained isometric exercise is due primarily to central command and that contracting muscle does not express a metaboreceptor-driven increase in MSNA. Here we tested the hypothesis that MSNA increases to the contracting muscle also during rhythmic isotonic exercise, in which muscle metabolites will not accumulate because the contraction is performed without external load. MSNA was recorded from the common peroneal nerve in 10 participants, and negative-going sympathetic spikes w

Background and aims Hereditary neuropathy with liability to pressure palsies (HNPP) is an autosomal - dominant hereditary neuropathy caused by a deficiency in the peripheral protein PMP-22, due to deletion on chromosome 17p11,2 or in some rare cases point mutations in the PMP-22 gene. The clinical picture is characterized by recurrent mononeuropathies in nerves which frequently may be exposed to pressure, such as the median, ulnar, radial and peroneal nerves or also a more general neuropathy. Although pain is reported to be an unusual clinical symptom, there have been reports of pain in a surp

Objectives: Polyneuropathy is the most common neurological complication in primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS). A ratio of sural nerve and superficial radial nerve sensorial action potential amplitudes (SRARs) of <0.4 is an indicator for early axonal neuropathy. We evaluated the polyneuropathies and SRARs in pSS patients.Method: Fifty-two female patients who were diagnosed with pSS according to the European-American Consensus Criteria and 45 healthy controls were enrolled. Nerve conduction studies were performed to diagnose polyneuropathy. Sensory axonal polyneuropathy was diagnosed in three pati

PURPOSE: A wave is a late response recognized during recording of F waves. Though they might be seen in healthy subjects, their presence assumes significance in a patient presenting with polyradiculoneuropathy.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 75 patients with acute inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (AIDP) were enrolled. They were divided into two groups based on the presence or absence of A waves. Clinical features, electrophysiological parameters and extent of clinical recovery in short-term follow-up were analyzed.
RESULTS: A waves were present in 49 out of 75 patients

Charcot-Marie-Tooth (CMT) disease type 1 is an inherited peripheral neuropathy characterized by demyelination and reduced nerve conduction velocities. We present a multi-generational family with peripheral neuropathy in whom clinical CMT panel testing failed to conclude a molecular diagnosis. We found a PMP2 pathogenic variant c.155T > C, p.(Ile52Thr) that segregates with disease suggesting that PMP2 variants should be considered in patients with neuropathy and that it may be prudent to include in clinical CMT gene panels.

BACKGROUND: Neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD) typically lead to spastic paraparesis and spare the peripheral nervous system (PNS).
CASE REPORT: Here, we describe an anti-aquaporin-4-seropositive NMOSD patient suffering from acute transverse myelitis with painful, flaccid paralysis and incontinence of urine and feces. Due to the involvement of the PNS as indicated by electrodiagnostic examination, we verified the expression of aquaporin-4-channels on the proximal dorsal spinal radix of rats by staining rat tissue with human NMOSD serum.
CONCLUSION: This case suggests a manifesta

We report a new transthyretin (ATTR) gene c.272C>G mutation and variant protein, p.Leu32Val, in a kindred of Bolivian origin with a rapid progressive peripheral neuropathy and cardiomyopathy. Three individuals from a kindred with peripheral nerve and cardiac amyloidosis were examined. Analysis of the TTR gene was performed by Sanger direct sequencing. Neuropathologic examination was obtained on the index patient with mass spectrometry study of the ATTR deposition. Direct DNA sequence analysis of exons 2, 3, and 4 of the TTR gene demonstrated a c.272 C>G mutation in exon 2 (p.L32V). Sural nerve

Fisher syndrome (FS), a variant of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), is characterized by the clinical triad of ophthalmoplegia, ataxia, and areflexia. The lesion sites for these unique clinical features include the oculomotor nerves and group 1a neurons in the dorsal root ganglion, and the presence of FS is determined by the expression of ganglioside GQ1b in the human nervous system. Neurophysiological findings suggest that ataxia and areflexia are due to an impaired proprioceptive afferent system. Typically, the soleus H-reflex is absent and a body-sway analysis using posturography shows a 1-Hz

The vestibular organs are very important to generate reflexes critical for stabilizing gaze and body posture. Vestibular diseases significantly reduce the quality of life of people who are affected by them. Some research groups have recently started developing vestibular neuroprostheses to mitigate these symptoms. However, many scientific and technological issues need to be addressed to optimise their use in clinical trials. We developed a computational model able to mimic the response of human vestibular nerves and which can be exploited for "in-silico" testing of new strategies to design imp

Pesticides are extensively used by farmers in China. However, the effects of pesticides on farmers' health have not yet been systematically studied. This study evaluated the effects of pesticides exposure on hematological and neurological indicators over 3 years and 10 days respectively. A cohort of 246 farmers was randomly selected from 3 provinces (Guangdong, Jiangxi, and Hebei) in China. Two rounds of health investigations, including blood tests and neurological examinations, were conducted by medical doctors before and after the crop season in 2012. The data on pesticide use in 2009-2011 w
