Towards elimination of genital schistosomiasis in Africa: Outlining strategic public health objectives and measures to protect future generations.

Urogenital schistosomiasis has 2 gender-specific manifestations, male genital schistosomiasis (MGS) and female genital schistosomiasis (FGS). The burdens of MGS and FGS are multifaceted, encompassing financial hardship, emotional and mental health problems and sometimes social stigmatization. Given the pernicious nature of sequelae in the genitalia, managing these chronic health conditions is expensive, difficult and problematic in resource poor settings. Key challenges include lack of epidemiological data on the burden of MGS and FGS, inadequate knowledge among primary and auxiliary health ca

Environmental mediation of colistin resistance in the African context. A systematic scoping review.

OBJECTIVES: The prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) among Gram-negative bacteria is a major global health concern. Resistance to last-resort antibiotics like colistin is particularly alarming. This study reviews how environmental factors have contributed to colistin resistance in the African context, where reports of colistin-resistant Gram-negative organisms are emerging. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted using multiple databases to identify articles on environmental mediation of colistin resistance in Africa. Search terms included "environment," "colistin," "mobile colisti

Rainfall impacts on nonpoint nitrogen and phosphorus dynamics in an agricultural river in subtropical montane reservoir region of southeast China.

The increased frequency and intensity of heavy rainfall events due to climate change could potentially influence the movement of nutrients from land-based regions into recipient rivers. However, little information is available on how the rainfall affect nutrient dynamics in subtropical montane rivers with complex land use. This study conducted high-frequency monitoring to study the effects of rainfall on nutrients dynamics in an agricultural river draining to Lake Qiandaohu, a montane reservoir of southeast China. The results showed that riverine total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) c

Atypical Wernicke's encephalopathy without mental status changes following bariatric surgery in an adolescent patient.

Morbid obesity is a systemic disease which can result in chronic complications, including hypertension, diabetes mellitus, depression, osteoarthritis and low self-esteem in the adolescent population.Bariatric surgery can be indicated to treat more severe forms of obesity, but these procedures are not without long-term risks. Therefore, adequate preoperative and postoperative care, which includes preoperative psychosocial evaluation for compliance, ongoing nutrition counselling and vitamin and micronutrient supplementation, is required for all patients, especially adolescent patients, who gener

Investigating the modulatory effects of lactoferrin on depressed rats through 16S rDNA gene sequencing and LC-MS metabolomics analysis.

Lactoferrin is a natural multifunctional glycoprotein with potential antidepressant-like effects. However, the mechanism of its antidepressant effect has not been explored from the perspective of gut flora metabolism. Therefore, we employed both 16S rDNA gene sequencing and LC-MS metabolomics analysis to investigate the regulatory effects and mechanisms of lactoferrin in a rat model of depression. After one week of acclimatization, twenty-four 7-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly and equally assigned into three groups: the control group, the model group, and the lactoferrin interv

Sonographic Optic Nerve Sheath Diameter as a Guide for Correction of Hyponatremia in the Emergency Department: A Cross-sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: Monitoring sodium levels during the correction of hyponatremia is essential. There is cell swelling due to the movement of water from extracellular to intracellular by osmotic effect in hyponatremia. The cellular swelling in a closed space causes increased intracranial pressure (ICP). The raised ICP correlates with the optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD). So, the research question was whether the ONSD can be used as a guide for the correction of hyponatremia. METHODS: It was a prospective observational study conducted on patients with serum sodium below 135 mEq/L presented to the e

Are standing osmotic gradients the main driver of cerebrospinal fluid production? A computational analysis.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) production by the ventricular choroid plexus (ChP) have not been fully deciphered. One prominent hypothesized mechanism is trans-epithelial water transport mediated by accumulation of solutes at the luminal ChP membrane that produces local osmotic gradients. However, this standing osmotic gradient hypothesis has not been systematically tested. METHODS: To assess the plausibility of the standing gradient mechanism serving as the main driver of CSF production by the ChP, we developed a three-dimensional (3D) and a one-dimensional (1D) comp

An Extensive Examination of the Warning Signs, Symptoms, Diagnosis, Available Therapies, and Prognosis for Lumpy Skin Disease.

The lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) infects cattle and buffalo and causes lumpy skin disease (LSD). It affects the lymph nodes of the sick animals, causing them to enlarge and appear as lumps (cutaneous nodules) that are 2-5 cm in diameter on their heads, necks, limbs, udders, genitalia, and perinea. A high temperature, a sharp drop in milk supply, discharge from the eyes and nose, salivation, a loss of appetite, depression, damaged hides, and emaciation are further warning signs and symptoms. As per the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the incubation period, or the time between an inf

Ginsenoside Rg1 alleviates sleep deprivation-induced learning and memory impairment by inhibiting excessive neuronal apoptosis in zebrafish.

Sleep deprivation impairs learning and memory. The neuroprotective function of ginsenoside Rg1 (Rg1) has been reported. This study aimed to investigate the alleviative effect and underlying mechanism of action of Rg1 on learning and memory deficits induced by sleep deprivation. Using 72 h of LED light to establish sleep deprivation model and treatment with Rg1-L (0.5 mg/ml), Rg1-H (1 mg/ml), and melatonin (positive control, 0.25 mg/ml), we investigated the behavioral performance of sleep deprivation zebrafish through 24 h autonomous movement tracking, a novel tank diving test, and a T-maze tes

Molecular Dynamics Refinement of Open State Serotonin 5-HT3A Receptor Structures.

Pentameric ligand-gated ion channels play an important role in mediating fast neurotransmissions. As a member of this receptor family, cation-selective 5-HT3 receptors are a clinical target for treating nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy and radiation therapy (Thompson and Lummis, 2006). Multiple cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) structures of 5-HT3 receptors have been determined in distinct functional states (e.g., open, closed, etc.) (Basak et al., 2018; Basak et al., 2018; Polovinkin et al., 2018; Zhang et al., 2015). However, recent work has shown that the transmembrane pore

Intrathecal autologous thrombin-activated condensed platelet cytokines in chronic neurodegenerative disease: A hypothesis for anti-inflammatory and regenerative response.

Choroid plexus insufficiency or glymphatic stasis are often classified as prequels to harmful accretion of toxic proteins in neurodegenerative disease. Cognitive decline and disordered neuronal signaling subsequently become cardinal features of Alzheimer's disease (AD), typically progressing with amyloid-ß and tau protein accumulation. For Parkinson's disease (PD), α-synuclein deposits and dopamine depletion are linked to impaired movement, resting tremor, and rigidity. Importantly, both diagnoses feature hyperinflammation and intrathecal cytokine changes. Thus far, numerous clinical trials ha

Population genomics of diarrheagenic Escherichia coli uncovers high connectivity between urban and rural communities in Ecuador.

Human movement may be an important driver of transmission dynamics for enteric pathogens but has largely been underappreciated except for international 'travelers' diarrhea or cholera. Phylodynamic methods, which combine genomic and epidemiological data, are used to examine rates and dynamics of disease matching underlying evolutionary history and biogeographic distributions, but these methods often are not applied to enteric bacterial pathogens. We used phylodynamics to explore the phylogeographic and evolutionary patterns of diarrheagenic E. coli in northern Ecuador to investigate the role o

Coptis chinensis polysaccharides dynamically influence the paracellular absorption pathway in the small intestine by modulating the intestinal mucosal immunity microenvironment.

BACKGROUND: Traditional Chinese Medicine decoctions (TCMDs) can be used to prepare outstanding pharmaceutical preparations by the patient themselves. Small molecular active ingredients and macromolecular polysaccharides are inevitably co-existed in TCMDs. Different from the pharmacological synergies among small molecules, the macromolecular polysaccharides in TCMDs might contribute to disease treatment in several ways, although it is frequently overlooked. HYPOTHESIS/PURPOSE: This study proposes that the oral bioavailability of the water-insoluble alkaloids of Coptis chinensis Franch. (Ranunc

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Communal Livestock Farmers regarding Animal Health and Zoonoses in Far Northern KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.

The presence of zoonotic diseases adversely affects livestock production and farmers' livelihood in communal areas. A lack of awareness about zoonotic diseases among rural farmers results in economic losses and health risks. The far north-eastern corner of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) province, South Africa, is home to large numbers of communal livestock farmers who live adjacent to wildlife reserves and international borders. There have been reports of zoonotic and trade-sensitive diseases in the area, but farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) in this regard are poorly understood. This st

Miro1 provides neuroprotection via the mitochondrial trafficking pathway in a rat model of traumatic brain injury.

The outer mitochondrial membrane protein mitochondrial Rho-GTPase 1 (Miro1) is known to be involved in the regulation of mitochondrial transport required for neuronal protection. Previous reports established that disruption of Miro1-dependent mitochondrial movement could result in nervous system diseases such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. This study was designed to explore the expression and mechanisms of Miro1 in secondary brain injury after traumatic brain injury (TBI). A total of 115 male Sprague Dawley rats were used in the weight-drop TBI rat model, and Miro1 in vivo kno

H2S aids osmotic stress resistance by S-sulfhydration of melatonin production-related enzymes in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Hydrogen sulfide closed Arabidopsis thaliana stomata by increasing the transcription of melatonin-producing enzymes and the post-translational modification levels to combat osmotic stress. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and melatonin (MEL) reportedly have similar functions in many aspects of plant growth, development and stress response. They regulate stomatal movement and enhance drought resistance. However, their physiological relationship is not well understood. Here, their crosstalk involved in osmotic stress resistance in Arabidopsis thaliana was studied. Exogenous H2S and MEL closed stomata unde

Critical review on soil phosphorus migration and transformation under freezing-thawing cycles and typical regulatory measurements.

Freezing-thawing period plays an important role in the soil nutrient cycling. The frequency of freezing-thawing cycles (FTCs) can directly affect the supply of effective soil nutrients, further influences the growth and development of crops. Phosphorus is one of the essential nutrients for crop growth, and almost no compounds in gas form in nature, which is non-renewable resources. In modern agricultural production, phosphorus required by plants is mainly from the soil, but the utilization rate of phosphorus fertilizer in soil is generally only 10%-25%. Therefore, it is of great significance t
