1,4-Triazolyl combretacoumarins have been prepared by linking the trimethoxyarene unit of combretastatin A4 with coumarins, via a 1,2,3-triazole. Control of rodent populations is a big challenge because of the rapid evolution of resistance to commonly used rodenticides and the collateral negative impacts that these products may have on biodiversity. OBJECTIVE: Marijuana (Cannabis spp.) growing operations (MGO) in California have increased substantially since the mid-1990s. One environmental side-effect of MGOs is the extensive use of anticoagulant rodenticides (AR) to prevent damage to marijuana plants caused by wild rodents. In association with a long-term demographic study, we report on an observation of brodifacoum AR exposure in a threatened species, the northern spotted owl (Strix occidentalis caurina), found freshly dead within 669-1347 m of at least seven active MGOs.

The palatability to captive, mostly laboratory-bred, Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) of cereal-based baits containing 0.02 g kg-1 brodifacoum, with and without bird-repellent additives, was compared in a no-choice experimental design. Because of the emergence of warfarin resistance, new potent long-acting anticoagulants are now readily available in several over-the-counter rodenticide products. The availability of these "superwarfarin" compounds has led to accidental and purposeful human ingestions, one of which has resulted in a death. We summarize the prior case reports and report a second death. In addition, we report the availability of an assay to detect the presence of brodifacoum (a superwarfarin compound) in human plasma and tissues.

A method for determining difenacoum in liver, plasma, urine and feedingstuffs by high-pressure liquid chromatography is described. Samples are cleaned up by molecular exclusion chromatography on porous glass. In some cases this also serves for determination; if not, the separated difenacoum is determined on an adsorption column. Identity is confirmed by chemical ionisation mass spectrometry. The mycelial extracts of two novel fungal species, Minutisphaera thailandensis and Hongkongmyces kokensis, were investigated for their antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and secondary metabolite profiles to assess their potential as sources of bioactive natural products.
