Relationship between blood group and epistaxis among Nepalese.

The relationship between blood group and epistaxis among the patients coming to Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, Kathmandu with idiopathic epistaxis was studied. A total of 235 patients coming to the Emergency Department or Department of Otorhinolaryngology with active nose bleeding in were included. ABO blood group was performed. Nearly half (45.5%) of the patients belonged to O-group followed by A-group others. O-group people were also had longer bleeding time compared to other blood groups.

Does ABO and RhD matching matter for platelet transfusion?

Platelets express ABO antigens and are collected in plasma, which contains ABO antibodies as would be consistent with the donor ABO group. Platelet ABO antigens that are incompatible with recipient ABO antibodies may have accelerated clearance from circulation and result in lower count increments. ABO antibodies that are passively transferred from donor plasma may result in hemolysis of recipient red blood cells. Although platelets do not express Rh antigens, they contain small numbers of intact red blood cells or fragments, which can lead to alloimmunization in the recipient. Alloimmunization

A Nationwide Study on Pretransfusion Testing for 10 Years in Korea Using Health Insurance Review and Assessment Claims Data.

BACKGROUND: Assessing pretransfusion testing utilization at medical institutions on a nationwide scale can be challenging. This study aimed to evaluate the status of pretransfusion testing in Korea by analyzing insurance claims data. METHODS: We identified all claims including pretransfusion testing or blood transfusion made between January 2011 and December 2020 from the Korean Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service database. ABO/RhD typing, antibody screening and identification, and crossmatching were analyzed according to the hospital type. RESULTS: A total of 42,968,177 claims fr

Immune hemolysis-serological and clinical aspects.

The differential diagnosis of anemia must consider immune hemolytic anemias as a frequent cause. Whereas detection of anti-red blood cell (RBC) alloantibodies frequently induced by immunogenic stimuli (transfusion, pregnancy) is performed by routine serology, diagnosing autoimmune hemolytic anemias or drug-induced hemolytic anemias remains a challenge, usually requiring close collaboration of a number of disciplines. Positive direct antiglobulin test (Coombs' test) represents a central criterion in diagnosing immune hemolytic anemias, leading to further detailed analyses. The most-severe type

Incorrect blood typing and mis-transfusion due to low-titer group O whole blood resuscitation.

BACKGROUND: Resuscitation strategies for massive hemorrhage increasingly involve the use of low-titer group O whole blood (LTOWB) due to evidence suggesting improved patient outcomes. However, the potential risk of incorrect ABO typing following LTOWB administration, possibly leading to mis-transfusion, remains insufficiently explored. This case series aims to highlight the potential risk of ABO mistyping associated with LTOWB transfusions in trauma settings. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed three cases involving trauma patients who received LTOWB transfusions at a high-v

Comparison of two platelet transfusion strategies to minimize ABO-nonidentical transfusion, outdating, and shortages using a computer-simulated "virtual blood bank".

BACKGROUND: Transfusion of ABO-incompatible platelets (PLTs) is associated with reduced PLT recovery and a risk of transfusion reactions. However, a policy of transfusing only ABO-identical PLTs may increase wastage due to product outdating. A prospective study attempting to compare the effects of different ABO compatibility strategies could be costly and disruptive to a blood bank's operations. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: We designed a "virtual blood bank," a stochastic computer program that models the stocking and release of products to meet demand for PLT transfusion in a simulated hospital

Successful ABO-Incompatible Renal Transplantation:  Blood Group A1B Donor Into A2B Recipient With Anti-A1 Isoagglutinins.

OBJECTIVES: Transplantation of the blood group A2B in a recipient was successfully performed in the setting of receiving a deceased donor kidney from an "incompatible" A1B donor. METHODS: The donor and recipient were both typed for ABO blood group, including ABO genotyping. The donor and recipient were tested for ABO, non-ABO, and human leukocyte antigen (HLA) antibodies. The donor and recipient were typed for HLA antigens, including T- and B-flow cytometry crossmatch tests. RESULTS: The recipient's RBCs were negative with A1 lectin, and immunoglobulin G anti-A1 was demonstrated in the recip

The relationship of blood-group type to American cutaneous leishmaniasis.

Following the hypothesis that Leishmania parasites escape the host defence mechanisms by mimicry of human blood group antigens, conflicting reports have been published. We tested the hypothesis in American cutaneous leishmaniasis, due to L. braziliensis guyanensis, by comparing the distribution of blood groups (ABO and Rhesus) among 96 patients in French Guiana with that among 1945 healthy controls. No association between blood groups and disease was found in this study, but further studies are needed with strains of the L. mexicana complex.

Immobilized Enzymes for ABO-Independent Blood Cell Transfusions.

The transfusion of blood products requires ABO compatibility due to A and B antigens on blood cells and their corresponding antibodies in plasma. The supply of red cell concentrates (RCCs) and platelet concentrates (PCs) is challenged by rising demand and declining numbers of donors. To counteract the supply limitations, a method is developed to generate universal RCCs and PCs. For this, the A antigen is enzymatically removed by two enzymes from Flavonifractor plautii working in concert and the B antigen is removed by galactosidases from Pedobacter panaciterrae (PpaGal_WT or the variant PpaGal

ABO blood groups and serum proteins in thromboangiitis obliterans (Buerger's disease).

In Madhya Pradesh, India, 43 patients with thromboangiitis obliterans showed a decrease in total serum proteins and in the albumin fraction, an increase in a1-and a2-globulin fractions, and decrease in the albumin/globulin ratio. In the ABO blood groups, patients show a significant excess of group B individuals. It is possible that the disease may be more severe in individuals with the B blood group substance.

The use of laser-based diagnostics for the rapid identification of infectious agents in human blood.

AIMS: To investigate the use of a laser-based method of detection as a potential diagnostic test for the rapid identification of infectious agents in human blood. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study, the successful differentiation of blood spiked with viruses, bacteria or protozoan parasites to clinically relevant levels is demonstrated using six blood types (O+, O-, AB+, A+, A-, B+) using blood from different individuals with blood samples prepared in two different laboratories. Experiments were performed using various compositions of filters, experimental set-ups and experimental parameters

Anti-A and anti-B: what are they and where do they come from?

Intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is made from thousands of donors having a variety of blood groups. All of the donors being used for IVIG production, with the exception of group AB donors, have in their plasma antibodies of variable titer commonly known as isohemagglutinins or ABO antibodies. As blood groups O and A are the most commonly found in the world population, most of the plasma used in IVIG production is from donors having these blood groups, with group B and group AB donors being fewer in number. Consequently, all batches of IVIG contain antibodies that are reactive with individuals
