Evaluation of the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System among men who have sex with men in Denver, Colorado.

Denver Public Health implements the National HIV Behavioral Surveillance System (NHBS), a cyclical survey of populations at increased risk for HIV. We evaluated the implementation of NHBS among Denver men who have sex with men (MSM), considering the system's simplicity, data quality, representativeness, and sensitivity to trends. We found that the time required for implementation and the complexity of data management and analysis are barriers to disseminating local findings. Data quality has improved in each cycle of the study but must be protected by continually checking for errors and traini

Adverse childhood experiences affect health outcomes for adults in North Dakota: 2019-2022 BRFSS population profile.

INTRODUCTION: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to chronic health conditions, at-risk behaviors, and reduced quality and length of life. Public health interventions targeting childhood trauma require an investigation of overall prevalence of ACEs and associations with outcomes and behaviors. METHODS: We created an ACE score using aggregated North Dakota (ND) Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data from 2019 to 2022. Adjusted odds ratios for selected chronic conditions, health risk behaviors, and health burdens were obtained using a logistic regression model

Incarceration and adversity histories: Modeling life course pathways affecting behavioral health.

A consequence of a growing incarceration rate is that an increasing number of children face having an incarcerated household member, a known contributor to diverse lifelong behavioral health risks such as substance use and mental health impairment. Few studies have explored how household incarceration uniquely contributes to these subsequent behavioral health concerns, nor mediational contributors to these associations, within a theoretical framework. Using state Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey data (n = 14,001), this study tests pathways of household incarceration and Advers

Persistent Cardiovascular Burden and Independent Association Among Cancer Survivors in the United States, 2016 to 2024.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of morbidity among cancer survivors. However, contemporary trends and independent association between cancer survivorship and prevalent CVD remain incompletely characterized. METHODS: Using 2016 to 2024 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, we analyzed 2 nationally representative cohorts of US adults. A trend cohort (n=3 642 415) assessed age-standardized CVD prevalence via Joinpoint regression. An association cohort (n=829 958) isolated the association between cancer survivorship and CVD using inverse probability of treat

Adverse Childhood Experiences, Depression and Subjective Cognitive Decline by Gender: A Moderated Mediation Analysis.

Studies assessing depression as a mediating factor between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and subjective cognitive decline (SCD) are lacking. Therefore, the aims of this study were to: (1) determine the mediating role of depression in the association between ACEs and SCD; and (2) assess the moderating role of gender. Data were obtained from the 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Study (BRFSS) survey (N = 38,600). Crude and adjusted path analyses were used to determine the mediating role of depression between ACEs and SCD. Adjusted analyses controlled for sociodemographic confounder

Binge Drinking Among Adults, by Select Characteristics and State - United States, 2018.

Excessive alcohol use* is associated with disease, injury, and poor pregnancy outcomes and is responsible for approximately 95,000 deaths in the United States each year (1). Binge drinking (five or more drinks on at least one occasion for men or four or more drinks for women) is the most common and costly pattern of excessive alcohol use (2). CDC analyzed data from the 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) to estimate past 30-day binge drinking prevalence, frequency, and intensity (number of drinks per occasion), overall and by select characteristics and state. The overall un

The Influence of School-Based Health Centers on Adolescents' Youth Risk Behaviors.

INTRODUCTION: Youth risk behaviors that are developed during adolescence are likely to continue into adulthood, increasing chances of morbidity, mortality, and chronic health conditions. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention identified six critical risk behaviors (unintentional injuries and violence, sexual behaviors leading to pregnancies and infections, alcohol and other drug use, tobacco use, poor dietary habits, and insufficient physical activities) and developed the Youth Risk Behavior Survey to monitor them. The purpose of this quantitative study was to investigate which health

Incentives in obesity and health insurance.

Health insurance is widely regarded as essential for financing the production of good health, but is insurance always beneficial for our health? Ex ante moral hazard may induce individuals with insurance to engage in behaviors that they otherwise would not undertake in the absence of insurance. Using data from the 1993-2002 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, we attempt to isolate the effects of ex ante moral hazard to determine the potential consequence of having health insurance on measures of body weight. In our analyses, we control for a variety of confounding factors that may infl

Extreme Weather Events and Pandemic Threats: Analyzing the Health Impacts of Multiple Disaster Events in Puerto Rico.

OBJECTIVE: The increasing frequency and severity of climate-related disasters pose major threats to public health, particularly when they intersect with other crises like pandemics. Puerto Rico has faced multiple large-scale disasters in recent years, yet research on their cumulative health effects remains limited. This study examines associations between disaster exposure-Hurricane María and the COVID-19 pandemic-and self-reported physical, mental, and behavioral health among Puerto Rican adults using Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data (2015-2021). METHODS: We used multivariable

Is Subjective Cognitive Decline Associated with Behavioral Health Outcomes Among Mothers?

OBJECTIVES: Studies suggests that pregnancy can alter the maternal neurological function of the brain (i.e., result in cognitive decline) in a way that remains prevalent well into middle and older adulthood. However, little research has explored these changes and how they might affect behavioral health outcomes, such as substance use and depression. METHODS: We merged data from the 2016, 2017, and 2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) surveys, with a final analytic sample of 1330 female participants (649 participants were mothers). Chi-square tests or t-tests were used to ex

Adverse Childhood Experiences and Use of Cigarettes and Smokeless Tobacco Products.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) have been linked to increased use of tobacco products later in life. However, studies to date have ignored smokeless tobacco products. To address this, data from the 2011 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, which interviewed adults 18 years and over (N = 102,716) were analyzed. Logistic regression models were fit to estimate odds ratios of ever smoking, current smoking and current smokeless tobacco use in relation to ACEs. Results showed that less than 4 % of respondents currently used smokeless tobacco products, while 44.95 and 18.57 % reported eve

Association of Leisure-Time Physical Activity to Cardiovascular Disease Prevalence in Relation to Smoking among Adult Nevadans.

It is well known that cigarette smoking and physical activity have significant impacts on cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and morbidity. Meanwhile, it is of interest to understand whether physical activity protects against CVD for smokers in a similar manner as it does for non-smokers. The present study examined how leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) is associated with the prevalence of CVD in relation to smoking status among adult Nevadans, using data from the 2010 Nevada Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System. Of the 3,913 survey respondents, 8.5% self-reported that they had ev

An Equity-Based Scoring System for Evaluating Surveillance-Related Harm in Public Health Crises.

BACKGROUND: Although surveillance systems used to mitigate disasters serve essential public health functions, communities of color have experienced disproportionate harms (eg, criminalization) as a result of historic and enhanced surveillance. METHODS: To address this, we developed and piloted a novel, equity-based scoring system to evaluate surveillance systems regarding their potential and actual risk of adverse effects on communities made vulnerable through increased exposure to policing, detention/incarceration, deportation, and disruption of access to social services or public resources.

Adverse childhood experiences and household firearm ownership: A large-scale analysis of specific risk factors among 15,771 adults from four U.S. states.

OBJECTIVE: Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are important determinants of long-term health and behavior, but limited research has examined their association with household firearm ownership. METHODS: We analyzed data from the 2023 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System in Nevada, New Jersey, Oregon, and Virginia. ACEs and household firearm ownership were self-reported. Weighted multivariable logistic regression was performed to examine the associations. RESULTS: This study included 15,771 participants, of whom 4739 (30.1%, unweighted) self-reported household firearm ownership. Compar

Trends in leisure-time physical inactivity by age, sex, and race/ethnicity--United States, 1994-2004.

Physical inactivity is associated with increased risk for certain chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and osteoporosis. Despite the benefits of physical activity, more than half of adults in the United States are not regularly active at the recommended levels. Trends in the proportion of adults who achieve the recommended levels of leisure-time physical activity have remained relatively stable over time. However, the proportion of adults from 35 states and the District of Columbia who reported that they did not engage in any leisure-time physical activity declined fro

The interaction of tobacco retailer density and rurality with tobacco use prevalence in Kentucky.

PURPOSE: Tobacco retailer density is a key correlate of tobacco use prevalence in the United States, but this relationship has typically been examined in urban areas. We examined the relationship between retailer density and tobacco use across Kentucky counties, a state with high smoking rates and a substantial rural population. METHODS: We obtained a list of tobacco retailers from the 2021 Kentucky Synar program, used for minor's access inspections. We merged these data with county-level prevalence estimates for cigarette and smokeless tobacco use for each county in Kentucky, calculated usin

Examining the relationship between social determinants of health with daily tobacco use, binge-drinking, and daily cannabis use.

INTRODUCTION: There is growing recognition that social determinants of health (SDOH) shape health behaviors in powerful ways. Given that risky substance use remains a persistent public health problem, the relationship between SDOH and substance use merits investigation. The objective of this study is to examine the relationship between various social determinants of health (SDOH) with binge drinking, daily tobacco use, and daily cannabis consumption. METHODS: Using the most recent Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data (2022-2023) we conducted two sets of logistic regression models.

Effects of Adverse Childhood Experiences and Chronic Health Conditions on Current Depression.

This study investigated the ability of three adverse childhood experience (ACE) types (household dysfunction, emotional/physical abuse, and sexual abuse) to predict current depression among adults. We also determined the contribution of ACEs to current depression after controlling for covariates and chronic illnesses. Respondents to the 2010 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (n = 20,345) were divided into depressed and not depressed groups based on Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8) scores. Binary logistic regression determined the ability of ACE exposure to predict depression whi
