A four-step hypnotherapy model for Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Hypnotherapy may sometimes be helpful in ameliorating the behavioral characteristics of Tourette's Syndrome. This paper presents a case study of an adolescent male with Tourette's Syndrome who was referred by his physician for hypnotherapy for his disorder. A four-step treatment model involved progressive relaxation, finger-tip temperature feedback using a biotic finger band, Spiegel's eye-roll procedure, and imagery. The adolescent was in treatment for nine sessions, from October 1985 to March 1986, a period of 6 months. At the end of the nine sessions, his tics and vocalizations were minimal

Blocking cybernosis in endocrine glands pathology.

The term cybernosis was proposed by Meerloo (1971) in order to designate the cybernetic functional disorders in senescence. Blocking cybernosis or bloking negative feedback is the term used for negative feedback perturbation in a neuro-endocrine subsystem caused by factors dwelling inside or outside it. Using the hypothalamo-hypophyso-adrenocortical subsystem as a model, the author shows that due to an excessive and anarchic secretion of corticoids by a tumor developed in the adrenocortical, the hypothalamo-hypophyseal control centers are blocked. A similar blockade occurs after longterm admin

Use of biofeedback in treating chronic hyperhidrosis: a preliminary report.

Preliminary findings attesting to the successful therapeutic use of biofeedback training in reducing symptoms of chronic hyperhidrosis are reported. Eleven of the fourteen adult patients trained with biofeedback were able to demonstrate clinical improvement in their excessive sweating 6 weeks after termination of treatment. Relaxation was suggested as the active ingredient in the biofeedback treatment effect. These findings support a recent report of the successful use of biofeedback in treating patients with dyshidrotic eczema.

Experimental analysis of EMG feedback in treating dystonia.

Recent clinical reports have suggested that electromyographic feedback offers promise as a palliative therapy for neuromuscular disorders. This study utilized a single-subject experimental analysis to evaluate the effects of EMG feedback training on a 20-year-old man with adult-onset idiopathic dystonia to achieve control of orofacial dysfunctions. Feedback training produced reductions in levels and variability of tension in facial and forearm muscles, as measured by EMG. Reliable blind observations of facial control indicated that feedback training enabled the patient to produce normal facial

Self-control, biofeedback, and change in 'psychosomatic' approach.

The new psychosomatic treatment modalities of biofeedback and relaxation techniques have in common an emphasis on self-control or self-regulation. The surging popularity of the self-control techniques at present may reflect a change in the self-image of medicine, which emphasizes its role as a collaborator of the patient in his self-control of disease processes. The modern concept of psychosomatic medicine emphasizes a systems or field approach to evaluation and treatment rather than 'psychogenic' causes of physical illness. The self-control treatment modalities form an important part of the a

Psychologic and behavioral management of tension-type headache: treatment procedures.

Used as an adjunct or alternative to medication treatment, psychologic and behavioral approaches to tension-type headache decrease headache frequency, affective distress, and headache-related disability. These approaches directly address the psychologic and behavioral factors that contribute to the disorder and to the individual headache episodes. There is well-established evidence of efficacy for the three broad approaches: relaxation training, electromyographic biofeedback training, and cognitive-behavioral stress management. Treatment has been difficult to access, with most care provided by

Biofeedback rehabilitation of airsick aircrew.

The biofeedback treatment of 20 aircrew, disabled by chronic severe airsickness, is reported. The USAF School of Aerospace Medicine (SAM) Airsick Rehabilitation Program requires careful selection to insure high motivation and thorough medical screening to rule out intercurrent medically disqualifying conditions. Patients are trained in relaxation techniques and placed in a modified Barany chair, capable of tilting as well as rotating. Psychological responses to motion stimulation are constantly monitored by both patient and investigators. Motion sickness is provoked, which the patient learns t

Physical Therapy for Addiction.

Physical therapy has the evidence-based scientific knowledge to address a wide range of physical and psychological problems of addiction. Neuromodulation techniques, including transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) methods like transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS), and transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS), as well as near-infrared light therapy, are becoming increasingly important in the treatment of addiction. Here, the efficacy of these different neuromodulation techniques in addiction, such as tDCS, repetitive transcr

Eye-gaze contingent attention training (ECAT): Examining the causal role of attention regulation in reappraisal and rumination.

This study used a novel eye-gaze contingent attention training (ECAT) to test the prediction that attention regulation is involved in reappraisal and rumination. Sixty-six undergraduates were randomly assigned to either the control or the active training condition of the ECAT. Active ECAT comprised training in allocating attention toward positive words to efficiently create positive interpretations while receiving gaze-contingent feedback. Participants in the control condition freely generated interpretations without receiving gaze-contingent feedback. Active ECAT resulted in: 1) more sustaine

The use of biofeedback in a behavioral program designed to teach an anxious child self-catheterization.

This paper presents a case study of a 7-year-old girl with a noncompliant bladder who was trained to self-catheterize using biofeedback and behavior therapy techniques. Initial attempts to train her to self-catheterize were unsuccessful owing to excessive amounts of fear, muscle tension, and refusal. After seven treatment sessions in which she was instructed in proper self-catheterization technique by a urology nurse clinician and coached in biofeedback-assisted relaxation by a clinical psychologist, the child successfully learned to self-catheterize. EMG readings showed a decrease in quadrice

Bringing the feet in from the cold: thermal biofeedback training of foot-warming in Raynaud's syndrome.

The biofeedback-assisted treatment of a case of Raynaud's syndrome was examined in order to determine the relationship between learning of the hand-warming response and the subsequent ability to produce foot-warming responses. It was found that fluctuations in dermal hand and foot temperatures were not significantly related, either within or across treatment sessions. The obtained hand-warming response was of high magnitude and rapidly learned, while the foot-warming response was more modest and took substantially more trials to learn. These results indicate that an easy generalization of the

Heart Rate Variability Applications in Medical Specialties: A Narrative Review.

HRV is clinically considered to be a surrogate measure of the asymmetrical interplay of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system. While HRV has become an increasingly measured variable through commercially-available wearable devices, HRV is not routinely monitored or utilized in healthcare settings at this time. The purpose of this narrative review is to discuss and evaluate the current research and potential future applications of HRV in several medical specialties, including critical care, cardiology, pulmonology, nephrology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, infectious disease, hem

Self-regulation and assessment approaches for vaso-occlusive pain management for pediatric sickle cell anemia patients.

An interdisciplinary program with the goal of teaching self-regulation and minimizing excessive narcotic use in the management of vaso-occlusive pain (V-O) in pediatric sickle cell anemia patients is described. A small group of patients do not respond well to any of our outpatients or inpatients medical regimens, leading us to suspect that psychological factors are influencing pain reports. We outline our multi-faceted assessment approach to evaluating such psychological factors, which includes a pain flow sheet, symptom check list, and a psychophysiologic profile. Published reports of self-re

Physiological adaptation during heart rate variability biofeedback in young adults: A survival analysis in high-stress academic environments.

Medical education is a high-demand environment where stress may disrupt autonomic and HPA-axis regulation. We examined symptom trajectories and adaptation during heart rate variability biofeedback (HRV-BF) in an academic setting. Forty-seven students were followed for ~3 months. The intervention group completed HRV-BF twice weekly (~30 min/session). Psychological outcomes (PSS, SAS, BAI, BDI) were assessed at baseline and follow-up, with clinically meaningful improvement defined as a ≥ 20% reduction. HRV/coherence indices were analyzed with mixed-effects models, and cortisol and secretory IgA

Efficacy of biofeedback for migraine: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Migraine, a severe headache accompanied by nausea, photophobia and phonophobia, can be controlled with pharmacological as well as non-pharmacological therapies. In biofeedback, patients learn to voluntarily modify their bodily reactions through feedback mediated awareness of physiological parameters, thus promoting relaxation, reducing stress and preventing migraine attacks. We aim to assess the efficacy of biofeedback on adult patients with migraine. Study protocol was registered on PROSPERO with reference number CRD42024606671. PubMed, Embase and Google Scholar were searched for randomized c

A portable visual biofeedback device can accurately measure and improve hip extension angle in individuals post-stroke.

BACKGROUND: Visual biofeedback has shown success in improving gait mechanics in individuals post-stroke but has typically been restricted to use on a treadmill or a short walkway. Using real-time visual biofeedback during overground walking could increase the ease of clinical translation of this method. The objective was to investigate the reliability of a real-time hip extension feedback device during unconstrained, overground walking. We hypothesized that the peak hip extension angle outcome of our device would be comparable to peak hip extension angle measured from a common motion capture s
