Diagnosis and treatment of carcinosarcoma of the renal pelvis: A case report.

Carcinosarcoma is a rare type of renal pelvis malignancy, the diagnosis of which requires the presence of malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. The prognosis of this disease is extremely poor due to its rapid progression and widespread metastases. The present study describes a case of carcinosarcoma involving the right renal pelvis in a 73-year-old female who presented with intermittent hematuria and right-flank pain that had persisted for one month. Computed tomography revealed a 2.4×2.5 cm mass in the right renal pelvis, which was diagnosed as a right renal pelvic tumor. Laparosco…

A case-control analysis of survival outcomes in sinonasal carcinosarcoma.

PURPOSE: Carcinosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor of mixed epithelial and mesenchymal origin. In the head and neck, carcinosarcoma most commonly affects the salivary glands. Primary sinonasal carcinosarcoma (SN-CS) is exceedingly rare. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 15 cases of SN-CS obtained from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) database from 1973 to 2010. Case-matched cohorts of non-sinonasal carcinosarcoma (NS-CS), salivary gland carcinosarcoma (SG-CS) and carcinosarcoma at all other head and neck sites (NonSNSG-CS) were used for comparison. RESULTS…

[Carcinosarcoma of the sigmoid colon with micropapillary pattern: a case report].

Carcinosarcomas are very rare malignant tumors showing both mesenchymal and epithelial differentiation. They most commonly occur in the head and neck region. Few cases were described in the colon associated with very aggressive course. Micropapillary variant is also very rare in the colon and associated with poor prognosis. We report an unusual case of carcinosarcoma of the colon with micropapillary features and psammomatous calcification in an 83-year-old female patient. Tumor was located in the sygmoid colon and measured up to 3.8 cm in the largest diameter. Microscopically it was composed o…

Carcinosarcoma arising in a uterine leiomyoma: report of a unique neoplasm.

Malignant transformation of a uterine leiomyoma is an exceedingly rare phenomenon. Previous reported examples of malignant neoplasms to arise so include leiomyosarcoma, angiosarcoma, and malignant mesenchymoma. We report an intramural carcinosarcoma arising in a uterine leiomyoma in a 38-year-old woman. This case is unique in being the first recorded carcinosarcoma arising within a uterine leiomyoma and the first example of an epithelial neoplasm to do so. We discuss the differential diagnosis and possible pathogenesis of the tumor that has likely arisen secondary to epitheliogenesis in a mese…

The impact of multi-modal therapy on survival for uterine carcinosarcomas.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate treatment outcomes of patients with carcinosarcoma of the uterus and to identify parameters predictive of survival. Secondary objectives included (a) the assessment of treatment failures as a function of histologic subtypes and (b) the impact of the new FIGO staging classification system. METHODS: This is a retrospective outcomes analysis of 121 patients diagnosed with primary carcinosarcoma of the uterus. Clinical, surgical and pathological data were reviewed and patients were classified according to the new 2009 FIGO staging system for endometrial carcinoma. Survi…

Carcinosarcoma of the parotid gland: report of a case with immunohistochemical findings.

OBJECTIVES: Carcinosarcoma (true malignant mixed tumor) of the parotid gland is an extremely uncommon tumor composed of both carcinomatous and sarcomatous components. An understanding of this manifestation is crucial to guide management and treatment of this disease. METHODS: A patient who presented with facial nerve weakness and a painful mass of the parotid gland underwent fine needle aspiration, laboratory testing, and computed tomography of the neck that demonstrated a large parotid malignancy. The patient underwent surgical treatment followed by radiotherapy. Histologic and immunohistoch…

Carcinosarcoma of the renal pelvis and urinary bladder: a case report.

Carcinosarcomas are rare biphasic malignant neoplasms with an epithelial and a spindle cell component. We present a 62-year-old man with a history of noticeably abdominal distension, proved by surgery to be caused by carcinosarcoma of the renal pelvis and urinary bladder, occupying the entire left abdominal flank. We also illustrate the appearance of this rare entity on sonography and computed tomography.

A case report of gastric carcinosarcoma with rhabdomyosarcomatous and neuroendocrinal differentiation.

We report herein an unusual gastric carcinosarcoma with rhabdomyosarcomatous and neuroendocrinal differentiation in a 63-year-old Japanese male. The tumor was a pedunculated large polypoid tumor (7 x 6.5 x 3.5 cm) located in the pylorus. Histologically, it invaded to the subserosa and was composed of both adenocarcinomatous and sarcomatous components. Adenocarcinomatous foci generally showed tubular to solid patterns and occupied the parts facing the gastric lumen, while the sarcomatous components showed a generally irregular and solid arrangement. There were transitions between the sarcomatou…

Carcinosarcoma of the renal pelvis: a case report with immunohistochemical study.

The clinicopathologic feature of one carcinosarcoma of the renal pelvis is reported. The tumor occurred in a 51-year-old woman with a long standing history of renal calculi. The epithelial component was consistent with squamous cell carcinoma, whereas the sarcomatous component was composed of pleomorphic spindle cells. The immunohistochemical studies demonstrated obvious epithelial and mesenchymal reactivity respectively. The tumor progressed rapidly with widespread metastases and the patient died one month after operation.

Carcinosarcoma of the urinary bladder--case report and literature review.

We describe a patient who presented with gross haematuria and dysuria. Investigations confirmed a bladder tumour, for which transurethral resection was done. The histology showed a carcinosarcoma, which was muscle invasive but organ-confined. The patient refused radical surgery and underwent a course of radical radiotherapy. He died 14 months later. Carcinosarcoma of the urinary bladder is a rare, mixed malignant tumour, composed of mesenchymal and epithelial elements. It is commoner in elderly men. It is an aggressive tumour with a short clinical course, and must be distinguished from collisi…

A Single-Cell Atlas of Uterine Carcinosarcoma from Diverse Ancestries.

Uterine carcinosarcoma (UCS) is an aggressive endometrial malignancy characterized by epithelial-mesenchymal plasticity, early metastasis, and poor therapeutic response. However, its single-cell organization and microenvironmental interactions remain incompletely defined, particularly in patients of African ancestry who are underrepresented in genomic datasets despite a disproportionate disease burden. Here, we generate a single-cell transcriptomic atlas of UCS from a diverse cohort enriched for patients of African ancestry, integrated with whole-genome sequencing. We identify pronounced inter…

Molecular characteristics of tubo-ovarian carcinosarcoma at different anatomic locations.

Carcinosarcoma (CS) is an uncommon and clinically aggressive malignancy. The objective of the present study was to characterize the molecular features of CS at various anatomic locations, including serous effusions. Specimens (n = 32) consisted of 25 biopsies/surgical resection specimens and 7 serous effusions (6 peritoneal, 1 pleural) from 25 patients. Fresh-frozen cell pellets and surgical specimens underwent targeted next-generation sequencing covering 50 unique genes. A total of 31 mutations were found in 25 of the 32 tumors studied, of which 1 had 3 mutations, 4 had 2 different mutations,…

Collective review of pancreatic carcinosarcoma, a very rare pancreatic malignancy.

Pancreatic carcinosarcoma is a very rare malignancy with a poor prognosis. Because of these characteristics, a treatment strategy for it has not been established yet. The aim of this study was to establish a therapeutic strategy for pancreatic carcinosarcoma. We reviewed data of a 65-year-old female patient who was diagnosed with pancreatic carcinosarcoma through endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy before surgery. For literature review, we searched PubMed using terms of "Pancreatic" or "Pancreas" and "carcinosarcoma" or "carcinosarcomatous". The patient received 11 cycle…

Successful Resection of Retrobulbar Carcinosarcoma without Recurrence: A Case Report.

Carcinosarcomas are biphasic tumors comprising carcinoma and sarcoma components that occur in many tissues but are rarely found in the orbit. A 70-year-old male presented to the ophthalmic clinic with progressive proptosis, having decreased vision in the left eye for 8 months. On examination, severe exophthalmos and lagophthalmos with limited extraocular movement were noted. Orbital computed tomography scans revealed a large, well-defined, heterogeneously enhanced mass in the left retrobulbar orbital cavity. The tumor was completely resected, and the pathological examination revealed a carcino…

Metastatic Basal Cell Carcinoma Arising From a Primary Cutaneous Carcinosarcoma.

Primary cutaneous carcinosarcoma is a rare malignant tumor composed of both an epithelial and mesenchymal cell population. We present a case of a man, aged 56 years, found to have a 26-mm exophytic lesion on the vertex scalp identified to contain a distinct population of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) as well as another population of spindled cells representing a poorly differentiated sarcomatous component. Five years after the removal of the primary lesion, the patient presented with metastatic BCC to the right scalp, right cervical nodes, lung, and rib. Next-generation sequencing of the lung met…
