Perceptions of information and participation in child and adolescent mental health care: a comparison of patient and caregiver reports across inpatient and day hospital settings.

BACKGROUND: In child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS), the principles of information provision and participatory decision-making have gained prominence, reflecting both legal mandates and ethical standards. Within the last few years, the number of day hospital treatment programs has increased and political decisions led to a reduction in inpatient beds. Given the structural and procedural differences between the treatment settings, this study examines whether patients' and caregivers' ratings of information and participation differ between an inpatient treatment and a day hospital

Reducing maternal, neonatal, and child mortality and improving quality of health care through a national task-shifting program for public hospitals in Liberia.

BACKGROUND: Contributing to the high hospital-based maternal, neonatal, and child mortalities in low resource countries and conflict zones is a shortage of health workers, especially physicians. Training programs, conducted over 12 years, have enhanced the skills of midwives, and nurses, to provide high quality, hospital-based, care to pregnant women, newborn infants, children, and adolescents. METHODS: A task-shifting partnership between the Ministry of Health, World Health Organisation, United Nations Population Fund, United Nations Children's Emergency Fund and the charity Maternal and Chi

Determinants of neonatal near miss among newborns admitted to SOS Mother & Child Hospital, Benadir region, Somalia: a case-control study.

BACKGROUND: While the birth of a newborn is often a moment of great joy, it can be overshadowed by life-threatening complications that endanger survival in the early days of life. Neonatal near-miss (NNM) cases are infants who survive severe complications, offer a valuable lens for evaluating the quality of neonatal care. Somalia continues to have one of the highest neonatal mortality rates globally, with about 37 deaths per 1,000 live births, highlighting significant gaps in maternal and child health services. This study aimed to identify the determinants of neonatal near miss among neonates

Prevalence of Rhesus C and D Alloantibodies among Rhesus-Negative Women of Child Bearing Age at a Tertiary Hospital in South-West Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: A major cause of hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn (HDFN) is an incompatibility of the Rhesus (Rh) blood group between the mother and fetus. AIM: To determine the prevalence of Rh c and D alloantibodies among Rh-negative women of childbearing age (18-49 years). We conducted a cross-sectional study among women who attended the antenatal, gynecology and blood donor clinics at a Tertiary Hospital in South-West Nigeria from January to August 2019. Serological typing of Rh c and D was done manually with the tube test using anti-c and anti-D antisera, while indirect antiglobuli

Late diagnosis of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in a child at Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, Ga-Rankuwa, South Africa: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: South Africa has one of the top ten tuberculosis burdens in the world, only lagging behind countries with significantly larger populations. Increased awareness of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, specifically spinal tuberculosis, is necessary, because of the HIV epidemic. CASE PRESENTATION: This report describes the case of a 9-year-old male patient who was suspected of having multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis, based on failure to recover clinically and radiologically after 6 months on first-line anti-tuberculosis treatment. Pus samples were sent to an accredited academic labor

How Much Will My Child's Operation Cost? Availability of Consumer Prices From US Hospitals for a Common Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgical Procedure.

BACKGROUND: Price transparency allows patients to make value-based health care decisions and is particularly important for individuals who are uninsured or enrolled in high-deductible health care plans. The availability of consumer prices for children undergoing orthopaedic surgery has not been previously investigated. We aimed to determine the availability of price estimates from hospitals in the United States for an archetypal pediatric orthopaedic surgical procedure (closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of a distal radius fracture) and identify variations in price estimates across hosp

About differences in the availability of child and adolescent psychiatric hospital beds across Europe and possible implications for mental health care. Are more or less hospital beds the solution to the youth mental health crisis? : Based on a debate at the 21st International Congress of the European Society for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Strasbourg, June 30, 2025.

A number of indicators point to a decline in youth mental health globally over the past 15 years. Access to medical treatment and assistance is becoming increasingly difficult as the social divide is widening due to an imbalance between supply and demand. Hospitalization remains a critical yet costly component of child and adolescent mental health care, reserved for the most severe cases. While necessary in some situations, inpatient treatment carries substantial drawbacks, including family separation and social disruption. This paper discusses if increasing hospital beds across Europe can be

The First 72 Hours After Child Sexual Assault: Reporting Children, Young People, and Mothers' Experiences of Police, Hospital, and Psychosocial Care in Victoria.

In Victoria, Australia, children who are reported to authorities to have experienced very recent sexual assault routinely undergo a forensic medical examination and receive psychosocial care. There is very little known about how children and their families experience this process and whether current practices are meeting their needs. This study seeks to understand these experiences by undertaking a thematic analysis of in-depth interviews with 10 children/young people (aged between 4 and 16) and 8 mothers (n = 18). The study draws on constructivist grounded theory methodology and incorporates

Secondary analysis of child hospital admission data for dental caries in London, UK: what the data tells us about oral health inequalities.

OBJECTIVES: Dental caries is the most common reason for hospital admissions for children aged 6-10 years in England. The prevalence in the experience of hospital admission is not uniform across all populations. This paper reports on the analysis of secondary data on dental hospital episodes for children residing in London, and its association with oral health inequalities. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Retrospective, non-identifiable patient data sourced from the Hospital Episode Statistics dataset was analysed. Finished consultant episodes (FCEs) were extracted for children aged 1-19 yea

[Infectious Etiologies of the acute diarrheas of the child from 0 to 5 years at the Pediatric University hospital Charles de Gaulle (Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso)].

To identify the infectious agents responsible for acute diarrheas in children from 0 to 5 years, with the aim of improving care, we led a cross-sectional prospective study at the Pediatric University hospital Charles de Gaulle from January 1st - November 30th, 2009. A sample of 103 children's stools hospitalized for acute diarrhea was analyzed. The average age of the patients was of 9.5 months and the most affected age bracket was the one from 0 to 12 months. More than half of the cases of diarrheas (60.2%) had an infectious etiology of which 33% of viral origin, 21.4% bacterial, 9.7% parasiti

Model for end stage of liver disease (MELD) is better than the Child-Pugh score for predicting in-hospital mortality related to esophageal variceal bleeding.

AIM: The Child Pugh and MELD are good methods for predicting mortality in patients with chronic liver disease. We investigated their performance as risk factors for failure to control bleeding, in-hospital overall mortality and death related to esophageal variceal bleeding episodes. METHODS: From a previous collected database, 212 cirrhotic patients with variceal bleeding admitted to our hospital were studied. The predictive capability of Child Pugh and MELD scores were compared using c statistics. RESULTS: The Child-Pugh and MELD scores showed marginal capability for predicting failure to c

Predicting hospital mortality in cirrhotic patients: comparison of Child-Pugh and Acute Physiology, Age and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE III) scoring systems.

OBJECTIVE: The severity of hepatic abnormalities and extent of dysfunction of other organ systems influences prognosis for cirrhosis. The Child-Pugh system has been used to classify cirrhotic patients into good, intermediate, or poor risk categories in evaluation and therapy. Disregard for cardiorespiratory, renal, electrolyte balance, and acid base status limits its predictive accuracy. We evaluated the accuracy of Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation (APACHE III) to predict short term hospital mortality in patients with liver cirrhosis. METHODS: A total of 282 patients were prospe

Serum uric acid level in chronic liver disease and its correlation with Child-Pugh score in a tertiary care hospital from South India.

BACKGROUND: Chronic liver disease (CLD) is one of the important causes of morbidity and mortality in our country, and since the damage to the liver is irreversible, we have to look for many severity markers or predictors for the prognosis of the patient. In this study, we have tried to correlate the level of serum uric acid (UA) with the severity of CLD presented as a Child-Pugh score. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted at Vijayanagar Institute of Medical Science (VIMS), Ballari, Karnataka, from October 2015 to June 2017 in the Department of General Medicine. A New Recalibrated Four-Category Child-Pugh Score Performs Better than the Original Child-Pugh and MELD Scores in Predicting In-Hospital Mortality in Decompensated Alcoholic Cirrhotic Patients with Acute Variceal Bleeding: a Real-World Cohort Analysis.

BACKGROUND: There currently is no consensus on how to accurately predict early rebleeding and death after a major variceal bleed. This study investigated the relative predictive performances of the original Child-Pugh (CP), model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) and a four-category recalibrated Child-Pugh (rCP). METHODS: This prospective study included all adult patients admitted to Groote Schuur Hospital with acute esophageal variceal bleeding secondary to alcoholic cirrhosis, between January 2000 and December 2017. CP and rCP grades and MELD score were calculated on admission, and the pre

Successful Cardiac Surgical Management in a Trisomy 21 Child After Long-Term Hospitalization Associated With Bronchopneumonia and Hepatitis C Virus Seropositivity: A Case Report.

A 31-month-old girl with trisomy 21 (Down syndrome) was seen in the emergency department of pediatrics because of oxygen desaturation associated with features of lower respiratory tract infections. She was born at full term and diagnosed with congenital heart disease (CHD) having ventricular septal defect (VSD), and patent ductus arteriosus (PDA); consequently, she underwent corrective surgery after adequate optimization of treatment. Incidentally, she was detected to have the presence of anti-hepatitis C virus (HCV) antibodies. In this case report, we mainly focus on the multi-modal approach

Seasonal extreme temperatures and short-term fine particulate matter increases child respiratory hospitalizations in a sparsely populated region of the intermountain western United States.

BACKGROUND: Western Montana, USA, experiences complex air pollution patterns with predominant exposure sources from summer wildfire smoke and winter wood smoke. In addition, climate change related temperatures events are becoming more extreme and expected to contribute to increases in hospital admissions for a range of health outcomes. Few studies have evaluated these exposures (air pollution and temperature) that often occur simultaneously and may act synergistically on health. METHODS: We explored short-term exposure to air pollution on childhood respiratory health outcomes and how extreme
