Connective tissue diseases comprise a spectrum of autoimmune disorders characterized by chronic inflammation and immune-mediated injury affecting the skin, vasculature, cartilage, and internal organs. The external ear, owing to its unique composition of elastic cartilage, thin dermis, and end-arterial vasculature, represents a visible and diagnostically informative site of connective tissue disease involvement. Auricular lesions may manifest as erythematous chondritis, purpura, necrosis, nodules, or sclerotic plaques, often providing dermatologists with early clinical clues to systemic disease

Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) is commonly used as a scaffold in tissue engineering applications. However, PVA has limitations in achieving mechanical properties that are suitable for natural cartilage. Collagen and gelatin are natural polymers with biocompatible, biodegradable properties, and low immune reactions. In the study, PVA/collagen/gelatin (PVA/Coll/Gel) were developed for microtia reconstruction. The effects of adding collagen of 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25% on the X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, microstructure, elastic modulus, and swelling properties of PVA/Co

Load-bearing soft tissues, e.g., cartilage, ligaments, and blood vessels, are made predominantly from water (65-90%) which is essential for nutrient transport to cells. Yet, they display amazing stiffness, toughness, strength, and deformability attributed to the reconfigurable 3D network from stiff collagen nanofibers and flexible proteoglycans. Existing hydrogels and composites partially achieve some of the mechanical properties of natural soft tissues, but at the expense of water content. Concurrently, water-rich biomedical polymers are elastic but weak. Here, biomimetic composites from aram

Elastin is a connective tissue protein, produced from the ELN gene, that provides elasticity and recoil to tissues that stretch, such as the large arteries of the body, lung parenchyma, skin, ligaments and elastic cartilages. It is produced as a soluble monomer, tropoelastin, that when cross-linked in the extracellular space generates a polymer that is extraordinarily stable, with a predicted half-life of >70 years. Although data suggest ongoing elastin transcription, it is rare to see new elastin deposited outside of its tight developmental window. Consequently, elastin-related disease comes

INTRODUCTION: The nasal tip refinement is the most difficult stages of rhinoplasty surgery; whereas, the most important part in terms of beauty and performance is the projection refinement. Lateral crural overlay (LCO) is a common technique in rhinoplasty used to reduce nasal tip projection and increase nasal tip rotation. Given the important role of lower lateral cartilage (LLC) in the non-collapse of nasal external valve and air passage, it is necessary to evaluate the changes in nasal elasticity caused by surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHOD: The design of this quasi experimental study was self-c

PURPOSE: To quantify the biomechanical effect of postoperative sagittal pelvic tilt (SA-PT) on hip joint stress and to relate the simulation findings to clinically observed hip migration and pain in non-ambulatory patients with flaccid neuromuscular (NM) scoliosis.
METHODS: Three representative postoperative CT scans (SA-PT + 30°, 0°, -15°) were segmented and mirrored to create symmetric pelvis-femur models. Cartilage was modeled as a 1.0 mm isotropic elastic layer. Five SA-PT angles (-30° to + 30°) were simulated by rotating the pelvis around the bicoxofemoral axis. A 400 N compressive load

PURPOSE: Conditions such as inadequate and ambiguous genitalia that are caused by rudimentary penis, severe hypospadias or traumatic injury require surgical intervention. Although silicone penile prostheses are an accepted treatment modality, biocompatibility issues may be a problem in select cases. We previously demonstrated that rods composed of cartilage could be created using chondrocytes seeded on biodegradable polymer scaffolds. We showed that the cartilage rods engineered ex situ were readily elastic and withstood high degrees of pressure. We investigated the feasibility of applying the

Effective treatment of cartilage defects represents a challenging problem, mainly due to the tissue's limited intrinsic self-repair capacity; the use of polymeric scaffolds as tissue substitute is rapidly increasing, but it is still limited by poor mechanical properties. Moreover, the onset of an infection can irreversibly affect the healing process. Accordingly, in this work we describe, for the first time, the preparation of composite scaffolds based on gellan gum, antibacterial Manuka honey and an inorganic clay (mesoporous silica, sodium‑calcium bentonite or halloysite nanotubes). The surf

The immuno-osseous dysplasias are a rare group of conditions in which short-limbed dwarfism is associated with an immune defect. The best known of these is cartilage hair hypoplasia. However, several reports of other distinct conditions exist, which have been arbitrarily classified on the basis of the immune defect. We present a child with a previously unreported combination of immune and skeletal abnormalities in whom there was an unusual and distinctive skin appearance associated with defective cutaneous elastic fibers. These cutaneous features suggest a unifying link with other immuno-osseo

The most common procedures to reconstruct a severe saddle-nose deformity are autogenous costal cartilage, iliac bone grafting, or Silastic implants. Each of them has its specific disadvantages. As an alternative solution, an autogenous bilateral conchal graft in sandwich technique is described. A 3-layer graft for the dorsum and a 2-layer graft to support the depressed columellar -tip area grants a more natural and elastic reconstruction of the nasal framework. The conchal grafts are taken by an incision made on the preauricular surface of the ear. How to plan the curved grafts by meticulous "

Mechanical behavior of bone is determined by the structure and intrinsic, local material properties of the tissue. However, previously presented knee joint models for evaluation of stresses and strains in joints generally consider bones as rigid bodies or linearly elastic solid materials. The aim of this study was to estimate how different structural and mechanical properties of bone affect the mechanical response of articular cartilage within a knee joint. Based on a cadaver knee joint, a two-dimensional (2D) finite element (FE) model of a knee joint including bone, cartilage, and meniscus ge

OBJECTIVES: Distributions of laryngeal spaces are important in understanding their functional significance. However, laryngeal spaces in the newborn larynx are enigmatic.
METHODS: Five normal human newborn larynges were investigated using whole organ serial section technique.
RESULTS: The chief newborn laryngeal spaces were the preepiglottic space, the paraglottic space and the cricoid area. They consisted of an areolar tissue area composed of brown adipose tissue (immature adipose tissue) and loose elastic and collagen fibers. The newborn preepiglottic space was immature and occupied a smal

Computational multibody musculoskeletal models of the elbow joint that are capable of simultaneous and accurate predictions of muscle and ligament forces, along with cartilage contact mechanics can be immensely useful in clinical practice. As a step towards producing a musculoskeletal model that includes the interaction between cartilage and muscle loading, the goal of this study was to develop subject-specific multibody models of the elbow joint with discretized humerus cartilage representation interacting with the radius and ulna cartilages through deformable contacts. The contact parameters

Regional behavioral differences have been observed clinically in epidermoid carcinoma of the head and neck. An animal model was developed for study, using homograft, transplanted epidermoid carcinoma in Fisher rats. Histopathologic review of tumors of the palate, base of tongue and larynx shows cartilage, arterial wall, surface epithelium and dense connective tissue containing elastic fibers to be relatively resistant to tumor invasion. Muscle, bone, vein and loose connective tissues were easily invaded. This correlates well with the known biochemical and immunological events in tumor invasion

Cell-based therapies for cartilage repair are continually being developed to treat osteoarthritis. The cells are either introduced directly by intra-articular injection or via a cell-seeded matrix scaffold. Here, poly(vinylalcohol)-based membranes are developed to be used for mesenchymal stem cell implantation in cartilage repair procedures, having controllable physicochemical properties such as porosity, mechanical strength, and permeability, and a unique self-sealing property. The membranes possess a bilayer structure with a less porous layer providing mechanical strength and selective perme

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of tooth apical stress changes caused by different types of occlusion on the TMJ stresses.
METHODS: The apical stresses measured from photo-elastic experiments (2 Kg centric vertical loading to seven types of occlusions separately) were applied to the established 3D finite elemental model. The stress distributions on condyle, superfacial cartilage of condyle and TMJ disc were compared.
RESULTS: (1) The stress on both anterior surface of condyle and its superfacial cartilage and on the intermediate band of disc were mainly compressive, while the stress on

Osteoporotic vertebral compression fracture (OVCF) is a common degenerative disease in the elderly. Biomechanical stimulation plays a key role in regulating bone remodeling and healing. In this study, a solid-liquid two-phase poroelastic finite element model was used to simulate bone remodeling in severely osteoporotic vertebrae under five functional loading modes: standing, flexion, extension, lateral bending, and axial rotation. Changes in tissue differentiation, mean elastic modulus, and interstitial fluid velocity in cortical and cancellous bone were quantitatively analyzed over the 77-day

The structure of connective tissues including cartilage, tendons, and ligaments as well as many organs, like the skin, heart, liver, kidney, lungs, blood vessels, and bones, depend on collagen. The bulk of the network of structural proteins that make up the extracellular matrix of the heart is composed of collagen type I and type III, which provide structural support for the muscle cells and are crucial for cardiac function. The prognosis and progression of a disease or diseased state may be significantly impacted by the upregulation or downregulation of the collagen types, particularly Col I

Increased proteoglycan (PG) synthesis is essential for the stimulation of cartilage repair processes that take place during the reversible phase of osteoarthritis (OA). In articular cartilage, xylosyltransferase 1 (Xylt1) is the key enzyme that initiates glycosaminoglycan (GAG) chain synthesis by transferring the first sugar residue to the PG core protein. Biological activity of PGs is closely linked to GAG biosynthesis since their polyanionic nature directly contributes to the proper hydration and elastic properties of the cartilage tissue present at the articular interface. The aim of this s
