Postembryonic development of the tracheal system of beetles in the context of aptery and adaptations towards an arid environment.

The tracheal system comprises one of the major adaptations of insects towards a terrestrial lifestyle. Many aspects such as the modifications towards wing reduction or a life in an arid climate are still poorly understood. To address these issues, we performed the first three-dimensional morphometric analyses of the tracheal system of a wingless insect, the desert beetle Gonopus tibialis and compared it with a flying beetle (Tenebrio molitor). Our results clearly show that the reduction of the flight apparatus has severe consequences for the tracheal system. This includes the reduction of the

Comparison of different quality factor models for space radiation protection.

Space radiation is considered the biggest threat to astronauts’ health in long-duration space missions, where the main concern is the potential carcinogenic effects from the continuous exposure to Galactic Cosmic Rays (GCR). The quality factor ([Formula: see text]) of GCR presents the greatest uncertainty, complicating accurate risk assessment and the establishment of safe radiation exposure standards for astronauts in missions beyond low Earth orbit. This study uses a recently developed analytic microdosimetric model to calculate [Formula: see text] values for space radiation. The influence o

Pharmacological countermeasures for long-duration space missions: addressing cardiovascular challenges and advancing space-adapted healthcare.

Future long-duration crewed space missions beyond Low Earth Orbit (LEO) will bring new healthcare challenges for astronauts for which pharmacological countermeasures (pharmacological countermeasures) are crucial. This paper highlights current pharmacological countermeasures challenges described in the ESA SciSpacE Roadmap, with a focus on the cardiovascular system as a model to demonstrate the potential implication of the challenges and recommendations. New pharmacological approaches and procedures need to be adapted to spaceflight (spaceflight) conditions, including ethical and reglementary c

Corneal Edema and the Endothelium in Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: With future manned missions that extend beyond low Earth orbit, it would be wise to anticipate all risks to astronaut health, including those relevant to ophthalmology and the ocular surface. Corneal edema has been documented among mice experiments conducted onboard the Space Transportation System mission, STS-133, owing to increased stress response gene expression. METHODS: A targeted, relevant search of the literature on topics relating to ocular surface and spaceflight was conducted with scholarly databases PubMed, Web of Science, and Embase from inception to July 2024. Exploiting the Unique Biology of Caenorhabditis elegans to Launch Neurodegeneration Studies in Space.

The 21st century is likely to be the first century in which large-scale short- and long-term space missions become common. Accordingly, an ever-increasing body of research is focusing on understanding the effects of current and future space expeditions on human physiology in health and disease. Yet the complex experimental environment, the small number of participants, and the high cost of space missions are among the primary factors that hinder a better understanding of the impact of space missions on human physiology. The goal of our research was to develop a cost-effective, compact, and eas

Neuro-consequences of the spaceflight environment.

As human space exploration advances to establish a permanent presence beyond the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) with NASA's Artemis mission, researchers are striving to understand and address the health challenges of living and working in the spaceflight environment. Exposure to ionizing radiation, microgravity, isolation and other spaceflight hazards pose significant risks to astronauts. Determining neurobiological and neurobehavioral responses, understanding physiological responses under Central Nervous System (CNS) control, and identifying putative mechanisms to inform countermeasure development are

Human torpor: translating insights from nature into manned deep space expedition.

During a long-duration manned spaceflight mission, such as flying to Mars and beyond, all crew members will spend a long period in an independent spacecraft with closed-loop bioregenerative life-support systems. Saving resources and reducing medical risks, particularly in mental heath, are key technology gaps hampering human expedition into deep space. In the 1960s, several scientists proposed that an induced state of suppressed metabolism in humans, which mimics 'hibernation', could be an ideal solution to cope with many issues during spaceflight. In recent years, with the introduction of spe

Drugs in space: Pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in astronauts.

Space agencies are working intensely to push the current boundaries of human spaceflight by sending astronauts deeper into space than ever before, including missions to Mars and asteroids. Spaceflight alters human physiology due to fluid shifts, muscle and bone loss, immune system dysregulation, and changes in the gastrointestinal tract and metabolic enzymes. These alterations may change the pharmacokinetics and/or pharmacodynamics of medications used by astronauts and subsequently might impact drug efficacy and safety. Most commonly, medications are administered during space missions to treat

Squirrel monkeys and space motion sickness.

Studies of the vestibular system in squirrel monkeys in consideration of space motion sickness (SMS) or space adaptation syndrome (SAS) were reviewed. First, the phylogenetic position of the squirrel monkey was considered. Then the anatomico-physiological studies of both the peripheral and the central vestibular systems were described, because the vestibular system is crucially important in the genesis of SMS (SAS). In this connection, the ablation studies of labyrinth, semicircular canals, and other SAS-related areas were referred to, and consideration was made for experiments about caloric i

FUNGAL FLORA OF ROSETTE QUILLS IN THE NORTH AMERICAN PORCUPINE (ERETHIZON DORSATUM) IN THE NORTHEASTERN UNITED STATES.

The North American (NA) porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) is a rodent species with specialized hair structures called quills designed to detach and penetrate into tissues of any human or animal coming into contact with them. The objective of this study was to characterize the fungal flora of the quills in the region of the rosette in wild NA porcupines to further define health risks to NA porcupines and any animal coming into contact with the quills. A total of 17 adult NA porcupines were sampled, and fungal culture was performed. Fungal organisms were cultured from 15 (88.2%) of 17 samples. Thir

Disease-syndrome combination modeling: metabolomic strategy for the pathogenesis of chronic kidney disease.

Conventional disease animal models have limitations on the conformity to the actual clinical situation. Disease-syndrome combination (DS) modeling may provide a more efficient strategy for biomedicine research. Disease model and DS model of renal fibrosis in chronic kidney disease were established by ligating the left ureter and by ligating unilateral ureteral combined with exhaustive swimming, respectively. Serum metabolomics was conducted to evaluate disease model and DS model by using ultra performance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry. Potential

Specific features of military low-altitude flight noise: criteria for risk of damage and physiological effects.

The impact of sound from military low-altitude flying (75 m) is characterized by high maximum levels of up to 125 dB, a rapid rise in sound pressure level (steepest 10-dB slope up to 111 dB/s, mean value 36 dB/s), and occasional (30%) follow-up oscillations of up to around 100 dB. The energy within this broadband sound is very often concentrated primarily in the 0.8 to 4 kHz range. A criterion for the risk of damage can be applied using constant-frequency spectral dose analysis in order to establish, for example, how many overflight events might be regarded as tolerable. We can also draw on fi

Rapid behavioral changes during early development in Peters' tent-making bat (Uroderma bilobatum).

Bats transition from flightless, milk-sustained infants to volant, foraging juveniles in the span of a few weeks to a few months. This rapid development is accompanied by fast growth and weight gain, but behavioral development remains poorly understood. We addressed development of maternal support and pup independence for Peters' tent-making bat (Uroderma bilobatum) in light of population level reproductive patterns. Uroderma bilobatum exhibited seasonal bimodal polyoestry at our study site. Births occurred over one month within a reproductive bout, resulting in variable levels of behavioral d

Effects of small-scale temperature shifts on Aedes mosquito production and the influence of environmental conditions on quality assessment with the FAO/IAEA flight test device.

Variations in environmental parameters such as temperature and relative humidity (RH) can significantly affect mass-rearing outcomes and quality assessment. While the impact of broad temperature changes is well documented, the effects of small-scale fluctuations (1-2 °C shifts) on development and quality remain largely unexplored. This study was carried out to investigate the responses of Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus to incremental changes in rearing temperature and to evaluate the influence of temperature and RH on quality assessment with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the Uni

Thermal limits of bumblebees and honeybees are modulated by different functional traits: predictions of a mechanistic model.

Local weather conditions are expected to have species specific effects on the activity of insect pollinators. However, the relationship between changing weather patterns and pollinator activity has not been well studied. We develop a thermodynamic model for insect thorax temperature that provides a mechanistic link between local weather conditions and functional traits (e.g. body mass, flight speed) and flight activity. We show that behavioural warming and cooling adaptations are essential for temperate bumblebees and the western honeybee, and that the maximum air temperature for sustained fli

Drosophila DNp03 descending neurons serve as a hub within a flight saccade network.

Animals rely on rapid sensorimotor processing to detect and respond to visual stimuli in their environment, yet how sensorimotor networks are organized to generate appropriate behaviors remains unclear. Here, we identify a bilateral pair of descending neurons (DNs), DNp03, as a hub for collision avoidance in flying flies. DNp03 receives visual information related to looming objects approaching on a collision course and connects directly and indirectly to motor neurons of the wings and neck, enabling the coordinated banked turn and head stabilization maneuvers of a rapid saccade. Although DNp03

Context-dependent effects of carbon dioxide on cross-modal integration during mosquito flight.

To navigate the environment and search for hosts, mosquitoes utilize multiple sensory cues including carbon dioxide (CO₂), visual, olfactory, and humidity cues. However, how mosquitoes shape their behavior by integrating these cues is poorly understood. Here we monitored the flight maneuvers of Aedes albopictus in a virtual reality environment where sensory cues were presented in open- or closed-loop. We found that CO₂ enhances optomotor responses to wide-field motion stimuli provided with various angular speeds and contrasts. Furthermore, CO₂ allowed more accurate tracking of a low contrast,

Divergent visual ecology of Drosophila species drives object-tracking strategies matched to landscape sparsity.

Maintaining stable gaze while tracking moving objects is commonplace across animal taxa, yet how diverse ecological needs impact these processes is poorly understood. During flight, the fruit-eating fly Drosophila melanogaster maintains course by making smooth steering adjustments to fixate the image of the distant visual background on the retina, while executing body saccades to investigate nearby objects such as food sources. Cactophilic Drosophila mojavensis live where there is no canopy; rather, the flora forming visual "background" and "objects" are one and the same. We tested whether D.

Big brown bats (Eptesicus fuscus) emit intense search calls and fly in stereotyped flight paths as they forage in the wild.

The big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus, uses echolocation for orientation and foraging, and scans its surroundings by aiming its sonar beam at obstacles and prey. All call parameters are highly adaptable and determine the bat's acoustic field of view and hence its perception of the echo scene. The intensity (source level) and directionality of the emitted calls directly contribute to the bat's acoustic field of view; however, the source level and directionality of the big brown bat's sonar signals have not been measured in the field. In addition, for bats, navigation and prey capture require that
