Mid-term biomechanical gait analysis of osteosynthesis in bony Lisfranc injuries.

BACKGROUND: Injuries to the tarsometatarsal joint (Lisfranc injuries) significantly affect foot biomechanics and gait. Surgical treatment is often necessary for fractures or unstable ligamentous Lisfranc injuries. However, data on midterm outcomes regarding gait and function remain limited. We hypothesized that operative treatment restores biomechanical function and gait. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed patients treated with osteosynthesis for Lisfranc injuries at our institution. Outcomes were assessed using subjective and objective measures (AOFAS, FAAM-G). Gait analysis included joint…

Video-based 2D markerless gait analysis in people with multiple sclerosis.

Multiple Sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disease frequently associated with gait impairments that can emerge early and progressively worsen, substantially affecting mobility and independence. The Expanded Disability Status Scale (EDSS) is widely used to quantify overall disability in people with multiple sclerosis. However, gait alterations may present as specific spatiotemporal and kinematic changes that are not explicitly described by the EDSS scoring criteria. In this context, quantitative gait analysis can provide complementary information on motor function. This study investigates the fe…

Open-Source Remote Gait Analysis: A Post-Surgery Patient Monitoring Application.

Critical to digital medicine is the promise of improved patient monitoring to allow assessment and personalized intervention to occur in real-time. Wearable sensor-enabled observation of physiological data in free-living conditions is integral to this vision. However, few open-source algorithms have been developed for analyzing and interpreting these data which slows development and the realization of digital medicine. There is clear need for open-source tools that analyze free-living wearable sensor data and particularly for gait analysis, which provides important biomarkers in multiple clini…

Gait analysis and weight bearing in pre-clinical joint pain research.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for better joint pain treatment, but development of new medication has not been successful. Pre-clinical models with readouts that better reflect the clinical situation are needed. In patients with joint pain, pain at rest and pain at walking are two major complaints. NEW METHOD: We describe a new way of calculating results from gait analysis using the CatWalk™ setup. Rats with monoarthritis induced by injection of Complete Freund's Adjuvant (CFA) intra-articularly into the ankle joint of one hind limb were used to assess gait and dynamic weight bearing. RESULTS: …

The complex genetics of gait speed: genome-wide meta-analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Prior research indicates that disease-related stigma (e.g., mpox stigma) tends to perpetuate even after the conclusion of the infection. For instance, HIV stigma remains highly prevalent despite the proliferation of stigma-reducing public health initiatives and campaigns. Perpetuation of these stigmas, especially association avoidance well after recovery, has somewhat confounded scholars and public health officials alike. In this study, using the concept of dispositional moral attribution, we offer an explanation for this perpetuated stigma. METHODOLOGY: We developed multiple logi

Gait Analysis Using a Support Vector Machine for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis.

Lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSS) is diagnosed based on physical examination and radiological documentation of lumbar spinal canal narrowing. Differential diagnosis of the level of lumbar radiculopathy is difficult in multilevel spinal stenosis. Therefore, the authors focused on gait analysis as a classification method to improve diagnostic accuracy. The goal of this study was to identify gait characteristics of L4 and L5 radiculopathy in patients with LSS and to classify L4 and L5 radiculopathy using a support vector machine (SVM). The study group comprised 13 healthy volunteers (control gro…

Gait analysis after tibialis anterior tendon rupture repair using Z-plasty.

Other than limited reports regarding surgical outcomes, little information is available regarding whether Z-plasty of the tibialis anterior results in normal gait kinematics. We included 5 patients with spontaneous ruptures in the present retrospective study. The mean interval between rupture and operative treatment was 2.6 ± 2.6 months (standard deviation). The mean age of the patients was 63 (range 40 to 80) years. All patients were treated operatively with Z-plasty. Gait analysis was used to study the outcome, comparing the operated and nonoperated limbs. The patients were tested after a me…

Improving regions of deviation gait symmetry analysis with pointwise T tests.

The regions of deviation method has been proposed as a technique for identifying regions of the gait cycle where joint motion deviates from normal (Shorter et al., 2008). The original statistical analysis distinguished only peak values during stance and swing. In the current article, we extend the approach by examining deviations from normal throughout the entire gait cycle using pointwise t tests. These methods were demonstrated on hind-limb joint angles of 21 Labrador Retrievers without and with cranial cruciate ligament disease. Results were compared with peak difference analysis previously

[Optoelectronic gait analysis after metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis of the hallux: fifteen cases].

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Degeneration of the metatarsophalangeal joint of the hallux is a frequent secondary lesion of the first ray subsequent to hallux valgus. Different surgical techniques have been proposed for cure, including metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis. Joint fusion relieves pain but sacrifices joint motion. The purpose of this work was to assess changes observed in gait after metatarsophalangeal arthrodesis of the hallux using a three-dimensional optoelectronic system. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Gait analysis was performed with a Vicon 3D system with five cameras and two AMTI force platfor…

Ultrasonic motion analysis system--measurement of temporal and spatial gait parameters.

The duration of stance and swing phase and step and stride length are important parameters in human gait. In this technical note a low-cost ultrasonic motion analysis system is described that is capable of measuring these temporal and spatial parameters while subjects walk on the floor. By using the propagation delay of sound when transmitted in air, this system is able to record the position of the subjects' feet. A small ultrasonic receiver is attached to both shoes of the subject while a transmitter is placed stationary on the floor. Four healthy subjects were used to test the device. Subtr

Validation of the Hughston Clinic subjective knee questionnaire using gait analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Subjective questionnaires, completed by the patient, are often used to document the status of a disabled knee. The purpose of this study was to validate the Hughston Clinic subjective knee questionnaire by describing how knee kinematics and kinetics correlated to subjective knee scores after knee injury and surgery. METHODS: Five groups were studied: patients 2 (N = 37), 6 (N = 37), and 24 (N = 8) wk after ACL reconstruction (ACLR); patients with a chronic PCL deficiency (N = 9); and uninjured controls (N = 8). A three-dimensional musculoskeletal model for gait analysis. Anatomical variability estimates.

Three-dimensional coordinates defining the origin and insertion of 40 muscle units, and bony landmarks for osteometric scaling were identified on dry bone specimens. Interspecimen coordinate differences along the anterior-posterior axis of the pelvis and the long bone axes of the pelvis, femur and leg were reduced by scaling but landmark differences along the other axes were not. The coordinates were mapped to living subjects using close-range photogrammetry to locate superficial reference markers. The error of predicting the positions of internal coordinates was assessed by comparing joint ce
