OBJECTIVE: The objectives of this study were to investigate scattered radiation doses to the hands of equine workers holding the cassette and the x-ray tube by hand, for both limb and vertebral column studies, and to compare the scattered radiation attenuation of lead with radiation protection lead-free gloves. A 44-year-old metalworker suffered from severe hand eczema in spite of treatment with corticosteroid ointments. He had been using protective cotton gloves with blue PVC anti-slip dots on the finger tips. On clinical examination, the backs of both hands were erythematous and thickened while the finger tips showed vesicles. Daffodils (Narcissus species) are the most common cause of irritant contact dermatitis among florists. Calcium oxalate crystals contained in the sap of the daffodil plants lead to irritant contact dermatitis on the skin. Daffodil rash commonly presents with fissuring, scaling, and erythema of the fingertips, hands, and forearms. The best preventative measure is to wear appropriate protective gloves and clothing.
