Dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria produce saxitoxin (STX) and ~50 congeners that disrupt bioelectrical signals by blocking voltage-gated sodium channels (NaVs). Consuming seafood carrying these toxins causes paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP). Although NaVs and anuran STX binding proteins (saxiphilins, Sxphs) use convergent STX binding modes, the structural basis for STX congener recognition is unknown. Here, we show that American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) RcSxph and High Himalaya frog (Nanorana parkeri) NpSxph sequester STX congeners using a 'lock and key' mode shared with STX. Importantly

Transhumant pastoralist communities in the Kashmir Himalayas represent a marginalized and understudied population, particularly vulnerable to health risks due to their mobility and isolation. This study examines their healthcare practices, knowledge, and attitudes (KAP), with a focus on zoonotic disease exposure. Data from 384 respondents revealed that only 15% were aware of zoonotic diseases, despite 80% reporting frequent disease outbreaks. Access to health care was limited for 71% of participants, hindered by geographic isolation, poor transportation, and financial constraints. A significan

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Leishmaniasis has a wider geographical distribution than before. This review focuses on molecular epidemiological studies of new foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis in South and Southeast Asia.
RECENT FINDINGS: In Pakistan, the main causative agent in southern dry areas was determined as Leishmania major followed by Leishmania tropica. There was no correlation between the skin lesion types and the causative species. In the western Indian Himalayas, L. tropica and Leishmania donovani have been reported as the causative pathogens. In Nepal, molecular methods revealed the first ca

Shilajit (Asphaltum punjabianum), a herbomineral ethnomedicinal substance from layers of rocks in the Himalayas and Hindukush ranges, is reported to treat urinary bladder cancer, it reduces inflammation, oxidative stress and bone loss. To date, there are no such authentic reports on the detailed separation or isolation of the chemical constituents from shilajit. In the current study, the high-speed counter-current chromatography technique is used for the separation of chemical constituents from shilajit for the first time. Thus, the current investigation depicts an efficient separation of six

Regular ingestion of Eupatorium adenophorum [Ageratina adenophora (Spreng.)] or Crofton weed causes chronic pulmonary disease in horses mainly in Australia, New Zealand, and the Himalayas. The disease is characterized by pulmonary interstitial fibrosis, emphysema, alveolar epithelisation and reduced tolerance to exercise. Horses apparently are the only animals affected and there are numerous reports of farms losing all their horses. The disorder was produced experimentally in horse feeding trials, and it was shown that characteristic lesions occurred in the lungs. In studies with laboratory an

BACKGROUND: In mid-2023, Nepal experienced a significant outbreak of conjunctivitis, affecting over 60% of outpatients in eye hospitals and prompting school closures. The outbreak, peaking in August, predominantly impacted children and individuals with compromised immunity. Clinical manifestations included sudden-onset redness, foreign body sensation, watery discharge, and occasional lid swelling. Most cases exhibited acute haemorrhagic conjunctivitis, with management involving ocular lubricants, personal hygiene, and topical antibiotics. This case series from Himalaya Eye Hospital in Pokhara

The considerable value of whey is evident from its significant potential applications and contributions to the functional food and nutraceutical market. The by-products were individually obtained during functional chhurpi and novel soy chhurpi cheese production using defined lactic acid bacterial strains of Sikkim Himalaya's traditional chhurpi. Hydrolysis of substrate proteins by starter proteinases resulted in a comparable peptide content in whey and soy whey which was associated with antioxidant and ACE inhibition potential. The rapid emergence of multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacterial pathogens poses a major threat for human health. In recent years, genome sequencing has unveiled many poorly expressed antibiotic clusters in actinomycetes. Here, we report a well-defined ecological collection of >800 actinomycetes obtained from sites in the Himalaya and Qinling mountains, and we used these in a concept study to see how efficiently antibiotics can be elicited against MDR pathogens isolated recently from the clinic. Using 40 different growth conditions, 96 actinomycetes were identified - predominantly Streptomyces - tha

Acute mountain sickness (A.M.S.) and its severe complications, high-altitude pulmonary oedema (H.A.P.O.) and cerebral oedema (C.O.), were studied in 278 unacclimatised hikers at 4243 m altitude at Pheriche in the Himalayas of Nepal. The overall incidence of A.M.S. was 53%, the incidence being increased in the young and in those who flew to 2800 m, climbed fast, and spent fewer nights acclimatising en route. It was unrelated to sex, to previous altitude experience, to the load carried, and to recent respiratory infections. The severity of A.M.S. was inversely related to age (independent of rate

Moths of the genus Gazalina are implicated in the etiology of Seasonal Hyperacute Panuveitis (SHAPU), an enigmatic eye disease prevalent in Nepal. However, the precise causative species has remained unconfirmed due to a historical reliance on purely morphological identification. To definitively identify the responsible species, we collected Gazalina specimens from Dhorpatan Municipality, one of the epicentres of the SHAPU outbreak in Baglung District, western Nepal. We employed an integrative taxonomic approach, combining morphological evaluation with molecular phylogenetic analysis of a fragm

Explaining the low-temperature limit of trees requires in situ information on the actual temperature conditions, the trees' phenology and freezing tolerance. Here, we report the seasonal course of freezing resistance and its response to local temperature in species of Larix and Abies, forming the treeline (4350-4400 m) in the south-eastern Himalayas, and Quercus and tree-size Rhododendron, reaching their upper limit in the immediate neighborhood (4270-4290 m). By linking tree-crown temperatures with on-site air temperature, we can utilize long-term meteorological records to hindcast critical f
