Evaluation of a laryngoscope and a rigid endoscope for the examination of the oral cavity of small mammals.

The oral cavities of 65 rabbits, 35 chinchillas, 38 guinea pigs, 19 degus and 13 prairie dogs suffering from a lack of appetite, hypersalivation, moist dermatitis, swelling of the lower jaw or mild exophthalmos were examined with a paediatric laryngoscope and rigid endoscope. The laryngoscope was safe and satisfactory for a preliminary examination, but changes in the less accessible caudal parts of the cavity could not be identified precisely. A rigid endoscope with 30 degrees optics made it possible to examine all parts of the oral cavity and oropharynx, and make detailed observations of surf

Flexibility and light emission of disposable paediatric Miller 1 laryngoscope blades*.

With the emergence of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease and the discovery of prions in tonsillar material, there has been an increase in the number of available disposable laryngoscope blades. This has led to non-conformity over many aspects of blade design. Miller 1 disposable blades have been produced in both metal and plastic and appear to have different properties of rigidity. We examined the rigidity of 11 disposable Miller 1 blades in three different axes of force. There was a significant difference in flexibility between metal and plastic blades in both primary and torsional axis (p = 0.006). W

Office-based laryngoscopic observations of recurrent laryngeal nerve paresis and paralysis.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the endoscopic criteria of recurrent laryngeal nerve disorders, we performed a retrospective evaluation of videolaryngoscopic recordings from 50 patients with recurrent laryngeal nerve disorders. METHODS: The videolaryngoscopic examination was performed with rigid and flexible endoscopes. The range of motion of three laryngeal structures was assessed: the vocal ligament, the vocal process, and the arytenoid "hump" (mainly the corniculate region). RESULTS: Comparison of movement of these three structures revealed discrepancies. In 16 of 45 patients (36%) rigid endoscop

Folding of the epiglottis - an unusual complication to be recognized after laryngoscopic endotracheal intubation.

We report a case of folding of the epiglottis during endotracheal intubation, an unusual complication of intubation. A 36-year-old female patient underwent laryngeal microsurgery for a vocal polyp. Following anesthesia induction, an endotracheal tube (ID = 6.0 mm, cuffed) was advanced through an intubating laryngoscope via the oropharyngeal route. At the beginning of the surgery, the otolaryngologist noted that the patient's epiglottis was folded under the view of the surgical laryngoscopy. The endotracheal tube was adjusted immediately by withdrawing it 0.5 cm with the cuff deflated. Slight e

[Direct laryngoscopic extirpation and wound suture for hypopharyngeal lipoma: a case report].

We report a case of hypopharyngeal lipoma. An 82-year-old woman referred to our clinic for 10 years of wheezing and intermittent breathlessness developing 1 month before admission was found on laryngoscopic examination to have a mobile mass arising from the hypopharyngeal region intermittently obstructing the laryngeal airway. After emergency tracheotomy, the tumor was removed under direct laryngoscopy, given the patients age and general status. Under general anesthesia, the tumor was extirpated using a laser and electric scalpel under microlaryngoscopy. The operative wound was sutured under d

Balloon versus conventional laryngoscopy: a comparison of laryngoscopic findings and intubation difficulty.

We compared laryngeal aperture (LA) exposure and endotracheal intubation difficulty scale (IDS) scores between balloon-assisted and conventional laryngoscopy. Thirty-two anesthetized and paralyzed elective surgery patients underwent laryngoscopy with a standard number 4 and a modified number 4 curved blade carrying a 6F Fogarty catheter. The balloon laryngoscopy technique included modified blade tip insertion into the vallecula, Fogarty catheter balloon inflation with 2 mL of air, and blade elevation until LA exposure maximization. On maximal LA exposure with both blades, the LA views were vid

Comparison of various video laryngoscopes for nasotracheal intubation in simulated difficult airway scenarios: a randomized self-controlled crossover trial.

BACKGROUND: Nasotracheal intubation (NTI) is particularly challenging in patients with rigid neck or micrognathia. Advancements in video laryngoscopy may improve NTI outcomes. We compared performance of direct laryngoscope (DL), King Vision videolaryngoscope (KVL), and C-MAC videolaryngoscope (VL) in normal, rigid neck, and micrognathia airway. METHODS: A randomized, self-controlled crossover trial was conducted with 20 anesthesiologists who performed NTI on a high-fidelity mannequin under three airway conditions. Device order was randomized using a computer-generated sequence, and outcome as

Comparison of VividTrac, King Vision and Macintosh laryngoscopes in normal and difficult airways during simulated cardiopulmonary resuscitation among novices.

INTRODUCTION: Early endotracheal intubation improves neurological outcomes in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, although cardiopulmonary resuscitation is initially carried out by personnel with limited experience in a significant proportion of cases. Videolaryngoscopes might decrease the number of attempts and time needed, especially among novices. We sought to compare videolaryngoscopes with direct laryngoscopes in simulated cardiopulmonary resuscitation scenarios. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-four medical students were recruited to serve as novice users. Following brief, standardized training,

[Comparison of five video laryngoscopes and conventional direct laryngoscopy : Investigations on simple and simulated difficult airways on the intubation trainer].

INTRODUCTION: Securing the airway with a tracheal tube is essential in emergency situations, in the intensive care setting as well as during anesthesia for surgery and other interventions. Current methods of airway assessment are poor screening tests for predicting difficult direct laryngoscopy due to a generally low positive predictive value; therefore, successful endotracheal intubation requires a high level of expertise, regular training and practice and sometimes additional tools. Currently, several video laryngoscopes (VL) with different designs are commercially available and have been in

Is older still good, or even better? Evaluation of possibility of using Miller laryngoscope for intubation in adults and comparison with the most widely used Macintosh laryngoscope. Protocol of a crossover randomized control trial.

BACKGROUND: Macintosh laryngoscope is the most widely used laryngoscope for intubation. In some patients, e.g. with flaccid, drooping, aplastic epiglottis, usage of this laryngoscope, or even videolaryngoscopes, may not provide visualization of a glottis. Elevation of the laryngopharynx, like in intubation with Miller laryngoscope, may significantly improve intubating conditions. METHODS: An anaesthesiologist with over 20 years of experience will perform direct laryngoscopy with randomly chosen Miller or Macintosh blade, evaluating the visibility of rima glottidis with Cormack-Lehane classifi

A Randomised Control Study Comparing C-MAC D-Blade Video Laryngoscope (Hyper Angulated Blade) and Macintosh Laryngoscope for Insertion of a Double-Lumen Tube in Patients Undergoing Elective Thoracotomy.

BACKGROUND: The use of a double-lumen endotracheal tube is one of the common anesthetic techniques for operations in the thoracic cavity. However, when compared to a single-lumen tube, placement of a double-lumen tube is technically more difficult as a result of which it takes more time to insert and is associated with more complications such as mucosal injury, hoarseness, and sore throat, even in patients with no anticipated airway difficulty. The CMAC D-blade that is usually used in patients with anticipated airway difficulty, could assist in smooth and quick placement of double-lumen tube (

A Comparative Evaluation of Three Different Attachment Methods for a Video Laryngoscope in a Surgical Setting.

INTRODUCTION: The prerequisite for transoral microsurgery of laryngeal lesions is an uninterrupted line of sight to the operative field. Patients with cervical stiffness or anatomical variations that prevent adequate laryngeal exposure are typically unsuitable for this procedure. In such cases, a curved video laryngoscope may facilitate improved access to the larynx. However, conventional suspension laryngoscopy setups are incompatible with standard video laryngoscopes. OBJECTIVE: This study evaluates three attachment methods for integrating a curved video laryngoscope into a surgical setup,

A segmentation network based on CNNs for identifying laryngeal structures in video laryngoscope images.

Video laryngoscopes have become increasingly vital in tracheal intubation, providing clear imaging that significantly improves success rates, especially for less experienced clinicians. However, accurate recognition of laryngeal structures remains challenging, which is critical for successful first-attempt intubation in emergency situations. This paper presents MPE-UNet, a deep learning model designed for precise segmentation of laryngeal structures from video laryngoscope images, aiming to assist clinicians in performing tracheal intubation more accurately and efficiently. MPE-UNet follows th
