Regional musculoskeletal pain in workers-is the traditional medical model increasing disability?

INTRODUCTION: Musculoskeletal disorders frequently cause work disability. For low back pain, a de-medicalized approach is advocated, whereas a biomedical approach is taken for shoulder and elbow/forearm pain. SOURCES OF DATA: PubMed, Cochrane Library, Google Scholar. AREAS OF AGREEMENT: Guidelines for the management of low back pain recommend de-medicalization, rapid mobilization, avoidance of imaging, second-line use of pharmacological treatments, and an emphasis on self-management and remaining in or rapidly returning to work. AREAS OF CONTROVERSY: Despite evidence for many treatment moda

'X-rays don't tell lies': the Medical Research Council and the measurement of respiratory disability, 1936-1945.

During the first half of the twentieth century, the mining industry in Britain was subject to recurrent disputes about the risk to miners' lungs from coal dust, moderated by governmental, industrial, medical and mining bodies. In this environment, precise measurements offered a way to present uncontested objective knowledge. By accessing primary source material from the National Archives, the South Wales Miners Library and the University of Bristol's Special Collections, I demonstrate the importance that the British Medical Research Council (MRC) attached to standardized instrumental measures

Molecular Mechanisms and Current Pharmacotherapy of Peyronie's Disease: A Review.

Peyronie's disease (PD) is a localized fibrotic lesion of the penis that has adverse effects on men's health. In this review, we summarized the molecular mechanisms and pharmacotherapies of PD. A literature search was conducted using PubMed and Cochrane Library during 2001-2020. Although no oral or topical medication demonstrated efficacy in monotherapy of PD, several intralesional medications have yielded promising results. Currently, the effective strategy in management of PD should be combined modality therapy, including but not limited to pharmacotherapy, mechanical therapy, and psychother

Trends on Nanomedicines as Novel therapeutics Approach in Targeting Nociceptors for Relieving Pain.

An important sensation that warns of potential harm to a specific area of the body is pain. The prevalence of pain-related conditions globally is a significant and growing public health issue. Chronic pain affects an estimated 1.5 billion people worldwide, with prevalence rates varying by region and demographic factors. Along with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, pain is among the most frequent medical diseases. Opioid analgesics are the mainstay of current pain therapies, which are ineffective. Opioid addiction and its potentially fatal side effects necessitate novel treatment st

Developments in diagnostic and surgical techniques in children with sagittal suture craniosynostosis: a systematic review spanning the last 30 years.

BACKGROUND: Sagittal suture craniosynostosis is the most usual subtype of craniosynostosis which results from premature fusion of the sagittal suture. It leads to an elongated skull shape known as scaphocephaly. This condition necessitates timely surgical intervention to correct cranial deformities and prevent the associated complications. Over the past three decades, the use of advanced diagnostic methods and the refinement of surgical techniques have improved the understanding of this rare disease. OBJECTIVE: To analyse the development of surgical interventions and diagnostic methods in chi

Serum Leucine Aminopeptidase Activity Patterns Across Various Disease States: Potential Implications for Bleeding and Thrombosis Risk.

BACKGROUND: Disruptions in the pathways for activating and deactivating proteases in the bloodstream can lead to thrombosis and bleeding issues. Leucine aminopeptidases (LAPs), which are exopeptidases essential for regulating protein and peptide activities, are recognized as clinical biomarkers for liver diseases. However, the relationship between serum LAP activity and the risks of bleeding or thrombosis, as well as the identification of the specific tissues or organs that control LAP levels, is not well understood. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study to evaluate serum LAP activities

Standardized assessment of evidence supporting the adoption of mobile health solutions: A Clinical Consensus Statement of the ESC Regulatory Affairs Committee: Developed in collaboration with the European Heart Rhythm Association (EHRA), the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing & Allied Professions (ACNAP) of the ESC, the Heart Failure Association (HFA) of the ESC, the ESC Young Community, the ESC Working Group on e-Cardiology, the ESC Council for Cardiology Practice, the ESC Council of Cardio-Oncology, the ESC Council on Hypertension, the ESC Patient Forum, the ESC Digital Health Committee, and the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (EAPC).

Mobile health (mHealth) solutions have the potential to improve self-management and clinical care. For successful integration into routine clinical practice, healthcare professionals (HCPs) need accepted criteria helping the mHealth solutions' selection, while patients require transparency to trust their use. Information about their evidence, safety and security may be hard to obtain and consensus is lacking on the level of required evidence. The new Medical Device Regulation is more stringent than its predecessor, yet its scope does not span all intended uses and several difficulties remain.

A Heat Emergency: Urban Heat Exposure and Access to Refuge in Richmond, VA.

The urban heat island effect exacerbates independent climate change-induced shifts toward longer, stronger, and more frequent heat extremes. Environmental inequity, driven by a history of racially motivated urban planning policies, has led particular demographics to bear the worst impacts of urban heat exposure and thus also climate change. These impacts cause adverse health outcomes in the form of heat emergencies. Through a novel demographic and spatial analysis of heat-related illness Emergency Medical Services data from Richmond, Virginia, this study investigates the relationships between

SmartScanPCOS: A feature-driven approach to cutting-edge prediction of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome using Machine Learning and Explainable Artificial Intelligence.

PolyCystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) poses significant challenges to women's reproductive health due to its diagnostic complexity arising from a variety of symptoms, including hirsutism, anovulation, pain, obesity, hyperandrogenism, and oligomenorrhea, necessitating multiple clinical tests. Leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare offers several benefits that can significantly impact patient care, streamline operations, and improve medical outcomes overall. This study presents an Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI)-driven PCOS smart predictor, structured as a hierarchical ense

Lower micromolar activity of the antifungal imidazoles on the bacterial-type bifunctional aldehyde/alcohol dehydrogenase (AdhE) in Cryptosporidium parvum and in vitro efficacy against the zoonotic parasite.

Cryptosporidium parvum is a waterborne and foodborne zoonotic protozoan parasite, a causative agent of moderate to severe diarrheal diseases in humans and animals. However, fully effective treatments are unavailable for medical and veterinary uses. There is a need to explore new drug targets for potential development of new therapeutics. Because C. parvum relies on anaerobic metabolism to produce ATP, fermentative enzymes in this parasite are attractive targets for exploration. In this study, we investigated the ethanol-fermentation in the parasite and characterized the basic biochemical featu

Development and Validation of a Phenotypic High-Content Imaging Assay for Assessing the Antiviral Activity of Small-Molecule Inhibitors Targeting Zika Virus.

Zika virus (ZIKV) has been linked to the development of microcephaly in newborns, as well as Guillain-Barré syndrome. There are currently no drugs available to treat ZIKV infection, and accordingly, there is an unmet medical need for the discovery of new therapies. High-throughput drug screening efforts focusing on indirect readouts of cell viability are prone to a higher frequency of false positives in cases where the virus is viable in the cell but the cytopathic effect (CPE) is reduced or delayed. Here, we describe a fast and label-free phenotypic high-content imaging assay to detect cells
