[Clinical features and weight loss in patients with morbid obesity after bariatric surgery].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the psychological status of morbidly obese patients suffering changes after surgical procedure for weight reduction. METHODS: We analyze the weight loss in 100 morbidly obese patients (85 female, 15 male) after bariatric surgery (vertical banded gastroplasty). We correlated the percentage of weight loss with the age of these patients, initial weight (body mass index at surgery), quality of life, eating behaviour, psychopathology, personality, and marital status. RESULTS: We have found relation between initial weight and weight loss (heavier patients lose more weight). T

Why do marital partners of people living with HIV not test for HIV? A qualitative study in Lusaka, Zambia.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge of HIV status is crucial for HIV prevention and management in marital relationships. Yet some marital partners of people living with HIV decline HIV testing despite knowing the HIV-positive status of their partners. To date, little research has explored the reasons for this. METHODS: An exploratory qualitative study was undertaken in Lusaka, Zambia, between March 2010 and September 2011, nested within a larger ethnographic study. In-depth interviews were held with individuals who knew the HIV-positive status of their marital partners but never sought HIV testing (n = 30)

Marital psychological and physical aggression and children's mental and physical health: direct, mediated, and moderated effects.

Relations between marital aggression (psychological and physical) and children's health were examined. Children's emotional insecurity was assessed as a mediator of these relations, with distinctions made between marital aggression against mothers and fathers and ethnicity (African American or European American), socioeconomic status, and child gender examined as moderators of effects. Participants were 251 community-recruited families, with multiple reporters of each construct. Aggression against either parent yielded similar effects for children. Children's emotional insecurity mediated the

Prognosis of the Keratinizing Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Tongue Based on Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Database.

BACKGROUND: The objective of this study is to determine the prognostic factors of keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue (KTSCC) and to establish a prognostic nomogram of KTSCC to assist clinical diagnosis and treatment. METHODS: This study identified 3874 patients with KTSCC from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) database, and these patients were randomly divided into the training (70%, (n = 2711) and validation (30%, n = 1163) cohorts. Cox regression was then used to filter variables. Nomograms were then constructed based on meaningful variables. Finally, th

Partnership and mortality in mid and late life: Protection or selection?

The main goal of this paper is to address how different partnership statuses impact the likelihood of death among mature adults and elderly persons in Spain circa 2012 using a massive new dataset of administrative registers linked to census data. First, gross and net effects of having a partner on mortality risks of partnered and non-partnered persons are evaluated; then the characteristics and the importance of selection and protection effects of marriage and partnership with regard to the likelihood of death are assessed. We make use of exact matching methods in order to avoid the selection

Do marriage problems affect fathering more than mothering? A quantitative and qualitative review.

The important question of whether marital problems disrupt fathering more than mothering is addressed in (a) a quantitative review of evidence on marital conflict and parenting in intact families, and (b) a qualitative review of research on mother and father involvement with their children following divorce. We conclude that (a) there is limited evidence that, relative to mothering, fathering is more likely to be affected by marital conflict, but suggest that (b) marital status (i.e., divorce) affects fathering notably more than it affects mothering. We further suggest that marital problems ma

Marital instability after midlife.

"Divorce in later life has been shown to produce dramatic declines in the economic, psychological, and physical well-being of marital partners. This study examines the prevalence and determinants of marital disruption after midlife using Becker's theory of marital instability. Using recent Canadian national data, the marital outcomes of women and men who were married as of age 40 are tracked across the remaining years of the marriage. Cox proportional hazard regression models indicate stabilizing effects of the duration of the marriage, the age at first marriage, the presence of young children

Outcome of marriage in schizophrenia.

Marriage is a social process requiring certain social abilities for it to be successful. Schizophrenia, which can lead to a reduction of such abilities, has been associated with a low marital rate, especially in men. Data on long-term marital outcome are, however, sparse. This paper deals with changing marital status in a cohort of 76 first-onset schizophrenic patients followed-up for 10 years. A fairly high marital rate of 70% was observed in this sample, with more men remaining single and more women facing broken marriages. It was observed that good marital outcome, in terms of getting marri

Adequacy of Prenatal Care Utilization in a Pathways Community HUB Model Program: Results of a Propensity Score Matching Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The THRIVE (Toward Health Resiliency and Infant Vitality & Equity) program aims to reduce racial disparities in birth outcomes by addressing individual risks and social determinants of health using the Pathways Community HUB model. This study examines (1) racial disparities among THRIVE participants and propensity score matched (PSM) comparisons in adequacy of prenatal care, and whether THRIVE participation (2) attenuates such disparities, and (3) improves odds of having adequate prenatal care. METHODS: Birth certificate and Care Coordination Systems client data were merged for

Marital biography and health at mid-life.

This article develops a series of hypotheses about the long-term effects of one's history of marriage, divorce, and widowhood on health, and it tests those hypotheses using data from the Health and Retirement Study. We examine four dimensions of health at mid-life: chronic conditions, mobility limitations, self-rated health, and depressive symptoms. We find that the experience of marital disruption damages health, with the effects still evident years later; among the currently married, those who have ever been divorced show worse health on all dimensions. Both the divorced and widowed who do n
