Meigs' syndrome is a rare gynecological condition characterized by a benign ovarian tumor, ascites, and pleural effusion, all of which resolve spontaneously after tumor removal. While mildly elevated serum CA-125 levels are frequently observed, levels exceeding 1,000 IU/mL are extremely rare, and concurrent elevation of other tumor markers, such as HE-4, may further complicate its diagnosis. We report a case of Meigs' syndrome in a 41-year-old premenopausal woman. Initial presenting symptoms included severe dyspnea, abdominal distention, anorexia, and weight loss. Subsequent imaging studies re

We herein report a case of atypical pseudo-Meigs' syndrome without pleural effusion. A 46-year-old woman was diagnosed with an ovarian tumor and sigmoid colon cancer with massive ascites. She underwent surgical resection of the sigmoid colon and bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. The pathological diagnosis was sigmoid colon cancer with ovarian metastasis. A few days after the operation, the massive ascites disappeared. Immunostaining for vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) suggested its overproduction was involved in the development of the ascites. Although cases of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome

Pseudo-Meigs syndrome is defined as secondary accumulation of ascites and hydrothorax associated with a pelvic tumor other than benign ovarian tumors such as fibroma, which usually resolve after surgical removal of the tumor. Here we report a case of pseudo-Meigs syndrome caused by a giant uterine leiomyoma, which was initially suspected to be ovarian cancer. A 37-year-old nulliparous woman presented with a 5-month history of abdominal distension and anorexia. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a giant cystic lesion and solid mass in the peritoneal cavity, along with plentiful ascites. Chest X…

BACKGROUND: Pseudo-Meigs syndrome is an unusual condition involving pelvic tumors, excluding ovarian fibroma, and is associated with ascites and hydrothorax. Pseudo-Meigs syndrome originating from uterine leiomyoma is an even rarer condition. Intravenous leiomyomatosis originating from uterine tumors, which extend from the inferior vena cava to the right heart chambers, is also extremely rare.
CASE REPORT: This report presents an extremely rare case of intravenous leiomyomatosis with intracardiac extension accompanied by Pseudo-Meigs syndrome caused by uterine leiomyoma. To the best of our kn…

Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome is a syndrome rarely caused by leiomyomas. Elevated CA125 usually suggests malignancy of the ovary. No reported case of pseudo-Meigs' syndrome presenting with necrosis and mucinous degeneration of uterine cellular leiomyomas (CLs) and an elevated CA125 level was found upon a PubMed search. A 37-year-old woman presenting with massive ascites, bilateral pleural effusions and a pelvic mass measuring 20 x 18 x 10 cm is described. The pre-operative serum CA125 was 920.4 U/ml. After total abdominal hysterectomy and partial omentumectomy, the final pathologic diagnosis was CL w

A 50-year-old woman was admitted because of abdominal fullness due to bilateral ovarian tumors, pleural effusion, and ascites associated with breast cancer. Although chemotherapy and the removal of ascites were performed periodically, the ascites did not disappear. The cytology of the ascites did not indicate malignancy. Pseudo-Meigs' syndrome caused by metastasis to both ovarian tumors was suspected. The patient underwent a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, and the pathological diagnosis was bilateral metastatic ovarian tumors from breast cancer. The ascites and pleural effusion resolved after

PURPOSE: Meigs' syndrome is a rare gynecological disease characterized by the triad of benign ovarian tumor, ascites, and pleural effusion. Ovarian malignancies should be highly suspected in a postmenopausal woman with a pelvic mass, ascites, hydrothorax, and an elevated carbohydrate antigen 125 (CA125) level. It can be challenging to make a preoperative diagnosis of Meigs' syndrome. In this report, we present a case of Meigs' syndrome caused by an ovarian fibrothecoma and review the relevant literature to raise awareness and avoid misdiagnosis.

Pseudo-pseudo Meigs' syndrome (PPMS), also known as Tjalma syndrome, is a rare complication of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), characterized by a triad of ascites, pleural effusion, and elevated CA-125 levels. We report a case involving a 74-year-old female with a prior history of SLE who presented with recurrent bilateral pleural effusions, elevated CA-125 levels, and mild ascites. Imaging showed no evidence of any mass or malignancy. In this case, the patient's presentation aligned with the diagnostic criteria for PPMS. Additionally, all other potential causes were investigated, and no a

We experienced a case of pseudo-Meigs syndrome associated with metachronous metastasis to the ovary from ascending colon cancer. A 65-year-old woman underwent curative surgery for ascending colon cancer at another hospital. A follow-up CT carried out 3 months after the surgery revealed a right ovarian tumor and a large amount of ascites. The patient was diagnosed with ovarian metastasis from ascending colon cancer with carcinomatous peritonitis. Palliative care was recommended, and she presented at our department for a second opinion. In spite of a large amount of ascites and pleural effusion,…

Pseudo-pseudo Meigs' syndrome (PPMS) has been reported to be a rare presentation of patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). However, such a presentation is not common in other forms of connective tissue disease. We presented a case of gross ascites, pleural effusion, and marked elevation of CA-125 level (PPMS-like features) that led to a diagnosis of MCTD. The patient responded to systemic steroid therapy.

We describe a female neonate with ovarian torsion, ovarian follicular and dermoid cysts, congenital ascites, pleural effusions, and respiratory distress. Her symptoms were consistent with atypical Meigs' syndrome and resolved after unilateral oophorectomy. This is the first report in a neonate of this syndrome in association with congenital ovarian disease.

The traditional perspective posits that Meige syndrome is a movement disorder primarily attributed to basal ganglia dysfunction. With advancements in neuroimaging technology, particularly the advent of high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), numerous morphometric studies have unveiled subtle alterations in whole-brain gray matter structure. Consequently, the conceptualization of Meige syndrome as a network disorder has gained increasing acceptance. Prior research has indicated that cortico-subcortical structural connectivity changes are implicated in movement disorders and appear to

Meige syndrome is a focal dystonic movement disorder characterized by blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia. It is a very rare disease. Individuals affected by Meige syndrome usually experience a wide array of complex symptoms including involuntary blinking and spasms of the jaw muscle. Dyspnea is rarely mentioned, due to dystonic spasm affecting the respiratory muscles. We report a case of a 69-year-old man with Meige syndrome, with dyspnea as the main clinical manifestation. Management often involves medications, botulinum toxin injections, and surgery to alleviate symptoms and enhance fu

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective therapy for Meige syndrome (MS). However, the DBS efficacy varies across MS patients and the factors contributing to the variable responses remain enigmatic. We aim to explain the difference in DBS efficacy from a network perspective. We collected preoperative T1-weighted MRI images of 76 MS patients who received DBS in our center. According to the symptomatic improvement rates, all MS patients were divided into two groups: the high improvement group (HIG) and the low improvement group (LIG). We constructed group-level structural covariance networks

BACKGROUND: Primary Meige syndrome (PMS) is a rare form of dystonia, and comparative analysis of globus pallidus internal deep brain stimulation (GPi-DBS), subthalamic nucleus deep brain stimulation (STN-DBS), and pallidotomy has been lacking. This study aims to compare the efficacy, safety, and psychiatric features of GPi-DBS, STN-DBS, and pallidotomy in patients with PMS.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study was divided into three groups: GPi-DBS, STN-DBS, and pallidotomy. Clinical assessments, including motor and non-motor domains, were evaluated at baseline and at 1 year and 3 years aft

Meige syndrome is a rare neurological disease characterized by segmental dystonia, specifically blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia. These symptoms are often accompanied by complex movements of the eyelids, lower facial muscles, mandible, and neck muscles. Bilateral blepharospasm is the most common feature of this disease. In this case report, we present the successful treatment of refractory blepharospasm in a 72-year-old woman with Meige syndrome via 2 incisions resulting from myectomy and in situ surgery.
