STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational study.
OBJECTIVES: A tool to help decision-making tool for Neurogenic Bowel Dysfunction (NBD) in individuals with SCI is needed. We present a project to create and validate a new tool, the Monitoring Efficacy of NBD Treatment On Response (MENTOR), and to determine its level of concordance with decisions made by experienced clinicians in the field.
SETTING: UK, Denmark, USA, Italy, The Netherlands, Germany.
METHODS: The first phase was creation of the tool through a modified Delphi process. The second phase was the validation, wherein individuals with

Some mentoring programs for youth have incorporated principles or strategies from cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), but research addressing the effectiveness of such programs is limited. This research is an evaluation of the impact of participation in Reach & Rise®, a program in which all mentors are supported in using CBT principles in their relationships with youth. Researchers randomly assigned youth either to be matched with a mentor through Reach & Rise® (i.e., treatment group; n = 316) or a waitlist control group (n = 284). We examined intent-to-treat effects using youth and caregiver

AIM: To demonstrate how workshop and mentoring across a network of radiotherapy centers helped in transitioning from point A to volume-based image guided brachytherapy in carcinoma cervix.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Based on discussion with different centers across the network, the lapses in cervical cancer treatment were identified and a workshop was designed to change the practice pattern. The main focus of the workshop was to streamline EBRT dose prescription protocols and implement volume based image guided brachytherapy through mentoring and hands on training. Patient data was analyzed 1 yea

BACKGROUND: Forearm fractures are among the most frequently encountered orthopedic injuries in children. The maintenance of satisfactory alignment can be problematic and postreduction displacement with resultant malunion can occur.
OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to evaluate pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) physicians' performance on forearm fracture reduction to determine the impact of a Process Improvement Intervention Program (PIIP) on postreduction displacement rates after initial reduction. The PIIP was designed to improve our PEM physicians' skills and knowledge in how to p

BACKGROUND: Youth with intellectual disabilities are at increased risk of developing anxiety disorders. Adapted CBT shows potential for youth with intellectual disabilities, but evidence for effectiveness is limited and mixed, urging the need for further optimisation. This study aims to develop a peer-mentored CBT intervention, together with and for youth with mild-to-borderline intellectual disability and anxiety, based on scientific evidence, clinical expertise and patient preferences.
METHODS: In the intervention development phase, 40 stakeholders (youth with intellectual disability, paren

The goal of this study was to examine correlates of maternal-fetal attachment in a diverse sample of young pregnant mothers. Although studies have looked at social determinants of health and maternal-fetal attachment, none have examined correlates that may be more prevalent in younger populations including prenatal drug use or fear of childbirth. We analyzed data from a prospective cohort of 154 pregnant adolescents and young adults (75.5% Black/African American, 15.6% white, 7.5% biracial, 1.4% other) ranging from 14-21 years old. Participants were recruited early in pregnancy and completed o

Objective: To identify factors impacting survivorship among people living with spinal cord injury (SCI) and volunteering in a peer mentorship program. Research Method/Design: Semi-structured interviews were conducted by a leader of a non-profit organization designed to promote independent living after SCI. Questions explored intrinsic factors such as resilience and emotional coping as well extrinsic factors such as family support and accessibility challenges that impacted their SCI survivorship journey. Two independent anonymous reviewers conducted thematic analysis to identify these factors.

OBJECTIVE: There were two objectives of this current study. (1) To understand the impacts of hearing loss for late-deafened adults and the experiences of support received both from hearing healthcare providers and peers. (2) To understand the types of support needed during and after a cochlear implant.
DESIGN: The study used mixed methods. A survey was posted to three cochlear implant social media groups and participants could self-select to participate in a semi-structured interview by leaving their email address.Study sample: Forty-four late-deafened adults who had also received at least on

Ensuring students are prepared for the Physician Assistant National Certification Exam (PANCE) is an institutional priority for all physician assistant programs. While many factors predicting PANCE performance have been investigated, exploration and discussions of interventions to improve PANCE performance are limited. Repeated exposure to board-style questions has been shown to improve board scores in similar populations. Currently, existing question banks cannot be used to generate secure summative examinations, and commercial question banks may perpetuate inequitable access among physician

Purpose: Although peer support has received research attention within different health related contexts, there is limited research considering individuals who have experienced an amputation. In particular, the peer mentoring role is under-explored. Therefore, this research aimed to explore the experiences of participants delivering peer support interventions to individuals with lower limb loss. Methods: Eight people who acted as peer mentors for people with limb loss took part in semi-structured interviews. Data were analyzed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA). Results: Two ov

Stigma and insufficient training contribute significantly to the substance use disorder pandemic. This 2014 study assessed the impact in Kenya of online competency-based courses on peer and mentor interactions, using NextGenU.org, the world's only portal to free and accredited higher education. A total of 99 health care workers participated in one of two courses. Completers (50% of those who logged in) reported significant increases in knowledge about substance use disorders and decreases in stigma. Most (92%) stated that they preferred the NextGenU.org courses over classroom courses. All resp

Parental incarceration is an adverse childhood experience that is associated with heightened risk for negative outcomes in youth. Mentoring programs seek to mitigate this risk by providing children of incarcerated parents (COIP) with a supportive relationship that fosters positive outcomes. The current study presents findings from a longitudinal evaluation of enhanced mentoring program practices designed for supporting COIP. One thousand three hundred and thirty-four COIP mentees, their parents or guardians, and their mentors were randomly assigned to receive either enhanced or business as usu

Employees experiencing mental health difficulties frequently encounter barriers to both securing and sustaining employment. Despite increased recognition of mental health in the workplace, most interventions continue to target employees in isolation, with limited attention to the relational and organisational contexts in which mental health issues arise. To address this gap, we developed MENTOR 2.0 - the first joint employee-manager workplace intervention designed to enhance employee wellbeing and job retention through targeted improvements in work engagement, interpersonal relationships at wo

BACKGROUND: Blended digital mental health interventions combining technology with human support are more effective than stand-alone treatments. However, limited research has examined how to train and supervise personnel delivering human support components. The Kuamsha app, a gamified digital intervention for adolescent depression based on behavioral activation, was designed to be paired with low-intensity telephone-based peer support. A structured training and supervision program for peer supporters was codeveloped through workshops with mental health professionals and youth with lived experie

AIM: To achieve a deeper understanding of the results of a primary randomised controlled trial to clarify the potential effective mechanisms and barriers of a peer-mentor intervention.
DESIGN: Mixed methods process-outcome evaluation of the intervention.
METHOD: Qualitative and quantitative data were collected during the intervention in a during-trial set-up, that is, a convergent design.
RESULTS: The qualitative and quantitative findings mostly confirmed and expanded each other, identifying several mechanisms that facilitate the effectiveness of peer-mentor support during cardiac rehabilit

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted medical research, pushing mentors and mentees to decide if COVID-19 research would be germane to the early career investigator's developing research portfolio. With COVID-19 halting hundreds of federal trials involving non-COVID-19 research, mentors and mentees must also consider the broader moral calling of contributing to COVID-19 research. At the time of writing, the National Institutes of Health had responded to the pandemic with significant funding for COVID-19 research. However, because this pandemic is a new phenomenon, few mentors have expertise in t

Traditionally, vocational training and liberal arts (and premedical) curricula have been separate education tracks. This personal profile describes a program that evolved from the partial fusion of vocational training and a premedical education track. My personal health issue, visual impairment, which presumably resulted as a complication of congenital toxoplasmosis, hampered my ability to read in grammar school and necessitated my placement in remedial reading classes until eighth grade. My father created an independent home-based vocational training program that ran in parallel to my traditi
