Iowa stream nitrate and the Gulf of Mexico.

The main objective of this work was to quantify and update the U.S. Midwest agricultural state of Iowa's contribution of nitrate-nitrogen to the Mississippi River stream network against the backdrop of the ongoing problem of Gulf of Mexico hypoxia. To achieve this objective, we used stream nitrate and discharge data collected from 1999 until 2016 at 23 Iowa stream sites near watershed outlets, along with publicly-available data for sites downstream of Iowa on the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers. Our analysis shows that Iowa contributes between 11 and 52% of the long-term nitrate load to the Mi…

BCG and Kawasaki disease in Mexico and Japan.

Dr. Tomisaku Kawasaki was the first to describe BCG reactivation in Kawasaki Disease (KD), and this sign is present in about 30-50% of KD patients. It is a very specific early sign of the disease and although it has been recognized for decades, its pathophysiology continues to be an enigma. Recently, Yamada et al. reported a severe BCG reaction with tuberculid in 2 Japanese KD patients. We present 2 cases with KD and severe BCG reaction, one from Japan and the other from Mexico and review the policies of administration of BCG in both countries. The BCG vaccine has a worldwide coverage of 88%. …

[Kawasaki disease at a pediatric hospital in Mexico].

BACKGROUND: Kawasaki disease (KD) is one of the most common systemic vasculitis in children under 5 years of age. The epidemiology of the disease is not well established in Mexico. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiology, clinical features and treatment of patients with KD at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gomez (HIMFG). METHODS: We conducted a retrospective, descriptive and analytical study of patients diagnosed from January 2004 to December 2014 with KD in the HIMFG. RESULTS: We analyzed 204 cases from which 55% were male, with a median age of 32.5 months (6-…

ENDEMIC ORTHOPOXVIRUS CIRCULATING IN PROCYONIDS IN MEXICO.

Limited serosurveillance studies suggested that orthopoxviruses (OPXV) are widespread in the US (e.g., Raccoonpox virus, Skunkpox virus, Volepox virus) and Brazil (Vaccinia virus); however, their animal reservoir(s) remain unconfirmed. Mexican mammal diversity includes several species related to those in which evidence for OPXV infections has been found (Oryzomys, Peromyscus, Microtus, and Procyonidae). The presence of these groups of mammals in Mexico and the evidence of their possible involvement in the maintenance of OPXV in nature suggest the same or similar OPXV are circulating in Mexico.…

[Child malnutrition, infrastructure and income in Mexico].

OBJECTIVE: Explain the variation in child malnutrition (CM), understood as low height for age (0 to 5 years old) for the period 1999-2006. MATERIALS AND METHODS: State estimations of child malnutrition and several indicators of subjacent probable causes of CM were employed, such as poverty indices, state product per capita, women scholar attainment and access to health and the sewage system. Panel data regression analysis with fixed and random effects were used to analyze the data. RESULTS: The results indicate that the lack to access to health and sewage systems and poverty worsen CM, where

Burden of serious fungal infections in Mexico.

Serious fungal infections (SFIs) could be more frequent than are recognised. Estimates of the incidence and prevalence of SFIs are essential in order to identify public health problems. We estimated the rates of SFIs in Mexico, following a methodology similar to that used in prior studies. We obtained information about the general population and populations at risk. A systematic literature search was undertaken to identify epidemiological reports of SFIs in Mexico. When Mexican reports were unavailable, we based our estimates on international literature. The most prevalent SFIs in Mexico are r…

[Dengue in Mexico: an analysis of two decades].

Dengue is one of the main vector-borne diseases and has become a severe Public Health problem during the last decade, both in Mexico and worldwide. This report analyses two decades (1990-2011) of dengue in Mexico, based on reports published by the Ministry of Health. The data show that although the incidence rate of dengue in Mexico has remained constant throughout the last two decades, the incidence rate for dengue hemorrhagic fever has increased importantly since 2002 (20% of cases). Additionally, during the last decade, the increase in the incidence rate of dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fev…

Quality of life in patients with neurocysticercosis in Mexico.

The objective of this study was to compare quality of life measures in patients with neurocysticercosis (NCC) to those of a matched control group. The NCC outpatients and their controls were recruited from two neurology referral hospitals in Mexico City, Mexico during 2007-2008. The quality of life of 224 NCC patients was compared with 224 age-sex-hospital-day matched controls using the short form 12 v2 (SF-12 v2) quality of life survey. Medical chart reviews were also conducted for the NCC outpatients to evaluate presenting clinical manifestations. Compared with the controls, NCC patients had…

[Incidence and transmission patterns of rubella in Mexico].

OBJECTIVE: To describe changes in the transmission patterns of rubella in Mexico. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An analysis of rubella incidence during 1990-2005 was performed to estimate the morbidity trend through a simple linear regression model. Endemic mapping was carried out by logarithmic transformation of the geometric mean of monthly incidence rates and 95% CI to estimate high and low endemic ranges. RESULTS: A stable trend was observed in morbidity during 1990-1998 ,descending during 1999-2005 (r=-0.88, r2=0.77), with a 97.1% cumulative decrease. Attenuation during seasonal variation, temp…

[Molecular approaches to the control of onchocerciasis in Mexico].

Onchocerciasis is one of the major causes of blindness in the World, with about 17.7 million infected, particularly in West Africa. In Mexico, onchocerciasis is also present and has been subjected to control since 1923. The standard diagnosis of onchocerciasis is by the detection of microfilariae by skin biopsy and transmission is evaluated by detection of Onchocerca volvulus larvae in the vector. Classically, this was carried out by manual dissection of Simuliumn ochraceun s.l. However, with the use of ivermectin, a drug that kills microfilariae but not the adult worms, the skin biopsy is bec…

[Serological study of bovine leptospirosis in Mexico].

The results of 4 043 bovine sera samples from various Mexican regions, which were sent to a diagnosis lab, were analyzed. The method was the agglutination technique, taking the dilution rate 1:1000 or higher as positive. The analysis revealed 31,1% of seroprevalence and the most frequent serovarietes were hardjo (strain H 89 isolated in Mexico), wolffi and tarassovi. There is coincidence with early data obtained in Mexico on a 34% of prevalence found in a similar study performed in 1994, and with the scientific literature from other countries. The former study also indicated that tarassovi and…

Heterozygous beta-thalassemia: not infrequent in Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The prevalence of beta-thalassemia in Mexico is not known in detail. METHODS: Data of studies investigating abnormal hemoglobins between September 1987 and November 2000 were analyzed; in addition, data of red-blood-cell indices and clinical features were analyzed in patients identified as carriers of beta-thalassemia. RESULTS: In 1,639 prospective studies looking for abnormal hemoglobins, 429 disclosed some abnormality; of these, 319 cases displayed abnormally high levels of hemoglobin A2, thus consistent with the diagnosis of beta-thalassemia. This hemoglobin abnormality repres…

Primary thrombophilia in Mexico: a prospective study.

A group of 102 Mexican Mestizo patients with appropriate clinical features suggestive of primary thrombophilia was prospectively studied. Thirty-nine percent of them had activated protein C resistance, but only four patients displayed the factor V Leiden mutation. Five percent of the individuals were found to be protein C deficient, whereas 2% had protein S deficiency. No cases of abnormalities in antithrombin III, plasminogen, tissue-type plasminogen activator or plasminogen activator inhibitor were found. The low prevalence of the activated protein C resistance genotype, probably stemming fr
