BACKGROUND: Hallucinations are common and distressing symptoms in Parkinson's disease (PD). Treatment response in clinical trials is measured using validated questionnaires, including the Scale for Assessment of Positive Symptoms-Hallucinations (SAPS-H) and University of Miami PD Hallucinations Questionnaire (UM-PDHQ). The minimum clinically important difference (MCID) has not been determined for either scale. This study aimed to estimate a range of MCIDs for SAPS-H and UM-PDHQ using both consensus-based and statistical approaches.
METHODS: A Delphi survey was used to seek opinions of researc

INTRODUCTION: Hip arthroscopy has been established as a successful management for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are frequently used to assess treatment results in patients. However, clinically important outcome values have recently been calculated to better understand and interpret PROMs and define successful treatment. This systematic review aimed to investigate the minimal clinically important difference (MCID), patient-acceptable state (PASS), substantial clinical benefit (SCB), and minimally detectable change (MIC) of the most common…

BACKGROUND: To estimate patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) and minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for patient-reported outcomes in systemic sclerosis (SSc).
METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of the SCLEREDUC trial, a 12-month randomized controlled trial comparing the efficacy of physical therapy to usual care in 220 SSc patients followed-up from September 2005 to October 2010. Self-rated state and change in patient health at 12 months were assessed by using 2 external anchors extracted from the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form. Patients who self-rated their …

BACKGROUND: To date, no prior study has established procedure-specific minimal clinically important difference (MCID) and patient acceptable symptom state (PASS) thresholds for anterior combined latissimus dorsi and teres major (LDTM) tendon transfer in irreparable anterosuperior rotator cuff tears (IASRCTs). This study aimed to establish these patient-centered benchmarks in a cohort with a minimum 5-year follow-up.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 31 patients (33 shoulders) who underwent a single-stage anterior LDTM transfer for IASRCTs and completed a minimum 5-year follow-up. Patient-r…

BACKGROUND: Improvements in patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) scores have been widely documented after posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (PCLR). Establishing clinically significant outcome (CSO) benchmarks for PROMs can enhance their clinical applicability.

OBJECTIVE: The minimal important difference (MID) and minimal important change (MIC) are two metrics that bridge the gap between statistical significance and clinical relevance and are critical to managing clinical decisions and conducting clinical research. The objective of this study was to define MIDs to evaluate cross-sectional differences among groups and to define MICs to evaluate longitudinal within-patient changes for the Mayo Clinic Vestibular Schwannoma Quality of Life (VSQOL) Index.
METHODS: Anchor-based methods were used to define MIDs and MICs for the VSQOL Index domain scores, w

BACKGROUND: Myopic adolescents face multiple psychological challenges, including anxiety, depression, and social isolation, necessitating multidimensional assessment. One such assessment tool is the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ), though it has not yet been validated in this specific population. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability, validity, responsiveness, and the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of the SDQ in this specific population.
METHODS: Following the consensus-based standards for the selection of health measurement instruments (COSMIN) guideline…

BACKGROUND: The minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is the smallest change in outcome that physicians or patients would consider meaningful and is relevant when evaluating disease progression or the efficacy of interventions. Studies of patients with late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) have used the 6-min walk distance (6MWD) as an endpoint to assess motor function. However, an MCID for 6MWD (% predicted and meters) has yet to be established in LOPD. The objective of the study was to derive 6MWD MCID (% predicted and meters) with different analysis methods and for subgroups of different…

BACKGROUND: Few studies have established the minimum clinically important difference (MCID) in patients undergoing minimally invasive transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (MIS-TLIF) for physical function and pain.
OBJECTIVE: To establish MCID for physical function and pain patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) for MIS-TLIF through anchor- and distribution-based methods using the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) as the anchor.
METHODS: Ninety-eight patients undergoing primary MIS-TLIF with preoperative and 1-year postoperative ODI scores were identified. MCID was calculated using anchor-

BACKGROUND: The clinical relevance of patient-reported outcomes score changes is often unclear. Especially in patients undergoing surgery due to lower extremity metastases - where surgery is performed in the palliative setting and the goal is to optimize functional mobility, relieve pain and improve overall quality of life. This study assessed the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) of Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Pain Interference, Cancer-specific Physical Function, and Global (Physical and Mental Health) in patients treated surgically for impen…

BACKGROUND: The Toronto Extremity Salvage Score (TESS) is the most widely used patient-reported outcome measure for orthopaedic oncology patients. However, minimal clinically important differences (MCIDs) in the TESS have not been analyzed. The aim of this study was to define the MCIDs of TESS in patients with lower extremity sarcoma.
METHODS: A total of 85 patients were investigated to calculate the MCIDs for TESS. Three different methods were used: 1) distribution-based methods based on one-half of the standard deviation and standard error of measurement (SEM) at the baseline, 2) anchor-bas…

UNLABELLED: Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease related dementias (AD/ADRD) have a significant impact on an individual's functional cognitive abilities, highlighting the need to prioritize measures of function in evaluating minimally clinically important difference (MCID) thresholds in AD/ADRD research. Input directly from individuals living with AD/ADRD on measures of function are lacking in MCID discussions, including what it means to live with AD/ADRD and what type and degree of improvements are most meaningful across the disease continuum. Most measures for assessing function in AD

Minimum clinically important differences (MCIDs) in acute pain intensity have not been well established. Conventional approaches for estimating MCIDs require an independent reference scale, with a threshold that must be presumed to accurately classify meaningful change in pain for all study participants, to serve as an anchor. The double stopwatch technique is the gold standard for measuring the time to meaningful relief, where participants actively press the second stopwatch when they experience pain relief that is meaningful to them. This technique eliminates the problem of misclassification

BACKGROUND: The 6-minute walk test (6MWT) is widely used to measure exercise capacity; however, the magnitude of change that is clinically meaningful for individuals is not well established in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).
OBJECTIVE: To calculate the minimal clinically important difference (MCID) for change in exercise capacity in the 6MWT in iron-deficient populations with HFrEF.
METHODS: In this pooled secondary analysis of the FAIR-HF and CONFIRM-HF trials, mean changes in the 6MWT from baseline to weeks 12 and 24 were calculated and calibrated against the Patient …
