The relationship of skin disease with societal ideals of beauty, and the role of the media in this relationship, has not previously been researched. The overall objective of this study was to explore the psychological effects of skin disease. The theme of the ideal of perfect skin and the role of the media in generating this ideal arose via an inductive study methodology and was explored in the context of respondents' psychological morbidity. Body dissatisfaction and unhealthy eating practices are common among sports and activities that require low body fat or low body weight for enhanced performance. Competitive Bodybuilding is a sport that requires participants to be exceptionally lean and mesomorphic, thus participants may be vulnerable to developing unhealthy eating and weight control practices, as well as using anabolic steroids. This study compares competitive female bodybuilders (CFBBs) and recreational female weight-training controls (RFWTs) on a broad scope of eating related and general psychological characteristics. INTRODUCTION: Functional GI disorders (FGIDs) are common in adults and children. Psychological factors play an important role in the onset and maintenance of FGIDs and in explaining the associated disability. Psychological treatments such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Hypnotherapy have been found efficacious in FGIDs but Integrating psychological treatments into traditionally medically-oriented care can be challenging.
AREAS COVERED: This review outlines the case for integrating psychological therapies into medical care for FGIDs and examine various models of integrated care that can be

BACKGROUND: Psychological interventions such as medical hypnosis, cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based techniques are emerging as promising tools in the management of persistent dyspnea. Their integration into clinical practice, however, is limited by the scarcity of validated outcome measures in non-English languages.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to provide linguistically validated French versions of four questionnaires selected for their potential relevance in assessing the psychological and perceptual dimensions of dyspnea: the Breathlessness Catastrophizing Questionna

The significant role of psychosocial factors in the management of type 1 diabetes in youth has been well documented. The International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes (ISPAD) therefore published the Clinical Practice Consensus Guidelines for psychological care of young patients. However, it is unclear if and how these guidelines are being implemented. A questionnaire was created to assess implementation of the guidelines and directed to physicians through the ISPAD listserve via a web-based survey. One hundred fifty-five participants from 47 countries completed the survey. Ninety

Stressful life situations can generate chronic symptomatology, so it is of great concern to analyze preventive strategies. Psychological debriefing is an intervention for acute trauma, which verbalizes perceptions, thoughts, and emotions experienced during a recent traumatic event. The evidence surrounding its efficacy is controversial. This article discusses the efficacy of psychological debriefing based on systematic reviews and clinical practice guidelines. In all, nine systematic reviews were included. Only one of them found that psychological debriefing effectively decreased psychological

BACKGROUND: The ratio of psychologists to the population is vastly lower in rural communities compared to urban areas, and more clinicians are critically needed in rural Australia. Other health disciplines have implemented generalist frameworks and training to encourage and prepare clinicians to remain in rural practice. Research often references rural psychology practice in conjunction with the broader allied health discipline.
OBJECTIVE: Though prior research has identified skills needed for rural psychology practice, further research is needed to expand and update the current understanding

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress with symptoms of depression and anxiety is common and unrecognized in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Efforts have been made to treat psychological distress in CAD with both conventional methods, such as antidepressant drugs and psychotherapy, and non-conventional methods, such as stress management courses. However, studies focusing on the experiences of mindfulness training in this population are still scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to explore immediate experiences of mindfulness practice among CAD patients with depressive symptoms

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Nursing students are more likely to have mental health problems due to the influence of many social environment factors, such as busy professional courses, difficult balance of learning and practice and complex and changeable clinical work environment. Psychological resilience, as a well-known protective factor, plays an important role in maintaining students' mental health. At the same time, from the perspective of social interaction, the particularity of close interpersonal contact (including colleague relationship, nurse-patient relationship, etc.) in clinical practi

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer screening hesitancy remains a major public health concern in China, where institutional screening resources are unevenly distributed. Breast self-examination is a simple, low-cost method suitable for resource-limited settings, yet participation remains suboptimal. Previous studies have predominantly focused on knowledge and beliefs in isolation, with limited integration of broader psychological constructs. This study examined psychological mechanisms by integrating the Knowledge-Attitude-Practice framework, the Health Belief Model, and a 5 C hesitancy model.

This study drew upon the knowledge base of member practitioners of the American Psychological Association (APA) to develop a taxonomy of helpful and harmful practices for treatment with boys and men. Four hundred seventy-five APA-member practitioners solicited from practice-related divisions provided responses to 4 open-ended questions about helpful and harmful practices in working with boys and men. Ten themes emerged from qualitative analyses. Beneficial and sensitive practices included addressing gender socialization and gender-sensitive issues as they apply to boys and men in psychological

BACKGROUND: Ethiopian migrants to the Middle East and South Africa are exposed to dangerous traveling and working conditions and their experiences are mostly tragic. They are unwelcomed not only by the situation in the destination but also by the community at home which is an important indicator of stigma and discrimination. However, there is lack of evidence on how psychological distress is associated with migration experiences, stigma and coping strategies. Therefore, it was aimed to determine the mediating effect of psychological distress in the association between migration experiences and

Background Periodontal disease is a multifactorial inflammatory condition influenced not only by microbial plaque but also by systemic, environmental, behavioral, and psychological factors. Psychological conditions, such as stress, anxiety, and depression, may contribute to periodontal disease progression through altered immune responses, increased inflammatory mediators, poor oral hygiene practices, smoking, and decreased compliance with dental treatment. General dental practitioners (GDPs) are often the first healthcare professionals to identify oral manifestations associated with psychologi

BACKGROUND: Intensive care unit (ICU) nurses frequently encounter ethical dilemmas, patient death and emotional distress, which can shape attitudes towards end-of-life care. Spiritual coping and psychological flexibility may support nurses' well-being and caregiving behaviour, but the mechanisms by which these factors affect ICU nurses' attitudes towards end-of-life care remain underexplored, particularly in Eastern cultural contexts.
AIMS: To examine associations between spiritual coping, psychological flexibility and attitudes towards end-of-life care among ICU nurses, and to test whether p

Patients with liver cirrhosis commonly have psychiatric and psychological symptoms, particularly depression, which substantially impairs quality of life and may increase all-cause mortality. However, the pathogenic mechanisms of co-occurring psychiatric and psychological symptoms in cirrhosis remain unclear and may involve multiple factors, including neurobiological alterations, liver dysfunction, primary liver disease, and treatment-related factors. Psychiatric and psychological symptoms can be assessed using diverse scales and managed with pharmacological and non-pharmacological intervention
