Digital Breast Tomosynthesis (DBT) has revolutionized more traditional breast imaging through its three-dimensional (3D) visualization capability that significantly enhances lesion discernibility, reduces tissue overlap, and improves diagnostic precision as compared to conventional two-dimensional (2D) mammography. In this study, we propose an advanced Computer-Aided Detection (CAD) system that harnesses the power of vision transformers to augment DBT's diagnostic efficiency. This scheme uses a neural network to glean attributes from the 2D slices of DBT followed by post-processing that consid

BACKGROUND: The paranasal sinuses are complex anatomical structures, characterised by highly variable shape, morphology and size. With the introduction of multidetector scanners and the development of many post-processing possibilities, computed tomography became the gold standard technique to image the paranasal sinuses. Segmentation allows the extraction of metrical and shape data of these anatomical components that can be applied for diagnostic, education, surgical planning and simulation, and to plan minimally invasive interventions in otorhinolaryngology and neurosurgery.
DISCUSSION: Our

Gastric volvulus is a rare entity with a spectrum of acute and chronic clinical presentations. Body radiologists must be cognizant of the subtypes of gastric volvulus and identify potential complications. Mortality can be high if unrecognized from gastric necrosis, perforation, and sepsis. CT with multiplanar reformations is critical for complete evaluation beyond radiography and fluoroscopy. This article reviews clinical and imaging features of uncomplicated and complicated gastric volvulus, with the aim of guiding appropriate management.

Computed tomography (CT) is a useful and widely employed imaging technique, which represents the largest source of population exposure to ionizing radiation in industrialized countries. Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction (ASIR) is an iterative reconstruction algorithm with the potential to allow reduction of radiation exposure while preserving diagnostic information. The aim of this phantom study was to assess the performance of ASIR, in terms of a number of image quality indices, when different reconstruction blending levels are employed. CT images of the Catphan-504 phantom were r

Separation of left and right lungs from binary segmentation is often necessary for quantitative image-based pulmonary disease evaluation. In this article, we present a new fully automated approach for accurate, robust, and efficient lung separation using 3-D CT scans. Our method follows a hysteresis setting that utilizes information from both lung regions and background gaps. First, original segmentation is separated by subtracting the gaps between left and right lungs, which are enhanced with Hessian filtering. Second, the 2-D separation manifold in 3-D image space is estimated based on the d

Radiological identification is important in forensic medicine. Identification using comparison of individualising structures with ante- and post-mortem conventional radiographs has been known for a long time. New radiological procedures such as computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are being increasingly used for identification. In this paper, a new comparative approach using various radiological methods is described and its application demonstrated. This new approach is the comparison of ante-mortem conventional radiographs with projected images calculated from post-mo

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of thin overlapping reconstruction on the attenuation of small (< or =3 cm) renal cysts in the nephrographic phase of multidetector CT (MDCT).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We scanned a phantom kidney containing spheres of various sizes (10, 20, and 30 mm) using both 4- and 16-channel MDCT scanners, and reconstructed images with various slice thickness (T, mm) and intervals (I, mm). The attenuation increase (AI) was measured for each sphere in 240-HU diluted solution of contrast material and compared with the attenuation in 35-HU solution.
RESULTS: On the 4-channel

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of different options for reduced-dose computed tomography (CT) on image noise and visibility of pulmonary structures in order to define the best choice of parameters when performing ultra-low dose acquisitions of the chest in clinical routine.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using an anthropomorphic chest phantom, CT images were acquired at four defined low dose levels (computed tomography dose index [CTDIvol]=0.15, 0.20, 0.30 and 0.40mGy), by changing tube voltage, pitch factor, or rotation time and adapting tube current to reach the predef

Paediatric head computed tomography (CT) dose optimisation was carried out using three figure-of-merits (FOMs), based on tube voltage, current, noise, volumetric computed tomography dose index (CTDIvol) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR). FOM1: spatial resolution and total minimum contrast level (N) against CTDIvol; FOM2: noise against CTDIvol; FOM3: CNR against CTDIvol. Stage 1: Application of FOM1 and FOM2 on a Catphan without current modulation. Stage 2: CTDIvol and noise assessed on an anthropomorphic phantom with current modulation. Stage 3: All FOMs applied to Catphan images acquired with

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Given the positive impact of early intervention for craniosynostosis, CT is often performed for evaluation but radiation dosage remains a concern. We evaluated the potential for substantial radiation dose reduction in pediatric patients with suspected craniosynostosis.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT projection data from pediatric patients undergoing head CT for suspected craniosynostosis were archived. Simulated lower-dose CT images corresponding to 25%, 10%, and 2% of the applied dose were created using a validated method. Three neuroradiologists independently interpreted

BACKGROUND: Unicoronal synostosis presents with cranial asymmetry. Fixed points are difficult to identify; surgical results are therefore difficult to evaluate. The aim of this study was to develop a computer-based method for evaluation of forehead symmetry to enable evaluation of surgical results in unicoronal synostosis.
METHODS: The MATLAB tool was programmed to segment computed tomographic images, leaving the outermost contour. Cephalometric images were segmented manually due to lower contrast. A center-point (O) and an end-point were manually defined in the midline of the forehead and at

Recent advances in multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) technology have transformed the imaging evaluation of the trachea and bronchi. Multiplanar 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional volume reconstruction techniques, including external rendering and virtual bronchoscopy, can be generated in mere minutes, thereby complementing conventional axial CT imaging in the depiction of various central airway disease processes including airway stenoses, central airway neoplasms, and congenital airway disorders. Paired inspiratory and dynamic expiratory MDCT imaging, along with newer cine CT imaging method

The purpose of this study was to develop, implement and evaluate a dedicated metal artefact reduction (MAR) method for flat-detector CT (FDCT). The algorithm uses the multidimensional raw data space to calculate surrogate attenuation values for the original metal traces in the raw data domain. The metal traces are detected automatically by a three-dimensional, threshold-based segmentation algorithm in an initial reconstructed image volume, based on twofold histogram information for calculating appropriate metal thresholds. These thresholds are combined with constrained morphological operations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the precision of CT-based volumetric measurements of artificial small pulmonary nodules under ex vivo conditions. We implanted 322 artificial nodules in 23 inflated ex vivo porcine lungs in a dedicated chest phantom. The lungs were examined with a multislice spiral CT (20 mAs, collimation 16x0.75 mm, 1 mm slice thickness, 0.7 mm increment). A commercial volumetry software package (LungCARE VA70C-W; Siemens, Erlangen, Germany) was used for volume analysis in a semi-automatic and a manual corrected mode. After imaging, the lungs were dissected to harv

PURPOSE: The accuracy and convergence behavior of a variant of the Demons deformable registration algorithm were investigated for use in cone-beam CT (CBCT)-guided procedures of the head and neck. Online use of deformable registration for guidance of therapeutic procedures such as image-guided surgery or radiation therapy places trade-offs on accuracy and computational expense. This work describes a convergence criterion for Demons registration developed to balance these demands; the accuracy of a multiscale Demons implementation using this convergence criterion is quantified in CBCT images of

PURPOSE: Research on vision-language models (VLMs) in the medical field has recently increased. However, while multifaceted evaluation is necessary to avoid the high risks associated with misdiagnosis, artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted mammogram report generation remains insufficient, with no studies on objective and subjective generation. We aimed to develop an AI system that generates mammogram reports and to verify the impact of differences between objective and subjective evaluation methods on the interpretation of this AI system.

Despite the similar global structures in Chest X-ray (CXR) images, the same anatomy exhibits varying appearances across images, including differences in local textures, shapes, colors, etc. Learning consistent representations for anatomical semantics through these diverse appearances poses a great challenge for self-supervised pre-training in CXR images. To address this challenge, we propose two new pre-training tasks: inner-image anatomy localization (IIAL) and cross-image anatomy localization (CIAL). Leveraging the relatively stable positions of identical anatomy across images, we utilize po
