Secondary indigestion as a cause of functional pyloric stenosis in the cow.

In 23 cows suffering from a secondary indigestion, in most cases with septicaemia, the syndrome of functional pyloric stenosis or vagal indigestion developed. The signs were anorexia, ruminal distension with fluid material, abomasal reflux into the ruminoreticulum, dehydration, hypochloraemic, hypokalaemic metabolic alkalosis and uraemia. These signs often disappeared after treatment of both the primary causative disease and the secondary indigestion. The importance of recognising this condition is emphasised, because the serious signs of the secondary indigestion may dominate the causative di

Changes in the rumen microbial community composition of dairy cows subjected to an acidogenic diet.

In modern breeding systems, cows are subjected to many stress factors. Animals fed a high-grain diet may have a decreased rumen pH, which would lead to subacute ruminal acidosis syndrome. The aim of this study was to investigate the evolution of microbial community composition in cows undergoing a dietary stress challenge. Twelve cows were subjected to a challenge period that consisted of a rapid change of ration, from a normal (45.4:54.6 forage:concentrate) to a high-grain content diet (24.8:75.2 forage:concentrate) to induce subacute ruminal acidosis. Individual rumen fluid content samples w

Scientific Opinion on the safety and efficacy of L-tryptophan produced by Escherichia coli (FERM BP-11354) for all animal species, based on a dossier submitted by Ajinomoto Eurolysine S.A.S.

L-Tryptophan, technically pure, is a feed additive produced by a genetically modified Escherichia coli strain (FERM BP-11354). Neither the production strain nor its recombinant DNA were detected in the final product. lTryptophan manufactured by fermentation with E.coli FERM BP-11354 does not give rise to any safety concern for the genetic modifications of the production strain. The L-Tryptophan product produced by E. coli (FERM BP-11354) is considered safe for non-ruminant target species when used to supplement the diet in appropriate amounts. The use of unprotected L-Tryptophan in ruminants'

The Cognitive Attentional Syndrome is Associated With Sleep Difficulties in a Community Sample.

We examined whether a process common to anxiety, labeled the cognitive attentional syndrome (CAS), is also associated with sleep disturbances. The CAS represents the sustained use of self-regulating strategies, such as rumination and worry, and beliefs individuals hold about such strategies. Using a sample of community adults located in the United States (N = 226), we found that the CAS was positively associated with sleep difficulties. The association remained intact after controlling for demographic variables, physical health, and negative affect. We further found that self-regulating strate

High-resolution Manometry: Esophageal Disorders Not Addressed by the "Chicago Classification".

The development of the high-resolution esophageal manometry (HRM) and the Chicago classification have improved the diagnosis and management … and respiratory symptoms. The utility of provocative tests and the use of HRM in the evaluation of rumination syndrome and post-surgical patients will also be discussed. We believe that characterization of the manometric findings in these areas will eventually lead to incorporation of new criteria into the existing classification.

Diversity of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from nares of ruminants.

AIMS: To examine the diversity of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from nasal swabs of ruminants in Rwanda. METHODS AND RESULTS: A total of 454 nasal swabs from 203 cows, 170 goats, and 81 sheep were examined for the presence of S. aureus, and 30 S. aureus isolates were detected and characterized pheno- and genotypically. Resistance to penicillin and/or tetracycline was observed. The isolates were assigned to eight different spa types (t21057 (novel), t10103, t18853, t20842, t318, t355, t458, and t9432) belonging to six clonal complexes (CCs) (CC152, CC30, CC3591, CC3666, CC522, and CC97). A pathological study of bovine alimentary mycosis.

A 10-year study showed that 45 of 692 cattle aged > 6 months had systemic mycosis and, of these, 38 had alimentary mycosis. The percentages of these 38 cattle with lesions in various sites were: rumen (73.7), omasum (71.1), abomasum (34.2), reticulum (21.1), intestine (15.8), omasoabomasal orifice (7.9) and tongue (2.6). Infections in both the forestomachs and abomasum occurred in 31.6 per cent; mucormycosis was found in 94.7 per cent and aspergillosis in 31.6 per cent; 26.3 per cent (10 cattle) had complicated infections with both Mucorales and Aspergillus and eight of these animals had mixed

Emotionally and Cognitively Drained: Longitudinal Associations Between Cognitive Emotion Regulation and Parental Burnout From Between- and Within-Person Perspectives.

Emotion regulation has recently been suggested to predict parental burnout, a prevalent syndrome in parenting. However, a substantial theory-method gap exists, as most studies have relied on cross-sectional data and between-person analyses. In this study, we aimed to illuminate the longitudinal associations between two powerful cognitive emotion regulation strategies-cognitive reappraisal and rumination-and parental burnout from both between- and within-person perspectives. We hypothesised reciprocal relationships between the use of emotion regulation strategies and parental burnout. To fulfil

Metacognitive beliefs, maladaptive coping strategies, and depressive symptoms: A two-wave network study of the COVID-19 lockdown and reopening.

To address the increased levels of depressive symptoms during the COVID-19 and other pandemics, it is useful to identify the psychological processes that may explain the relationship between pandemic-related stressors and symptoms. In this study, both the combined network of metacognitions and maladaptive coping strategies-derived from the metacognitive therapy model-and the depressive symptoms were studied during the COVID-19 related lockdown and the partial reopening of the Norwegian society about 3 months later. In an online survey, 4936 participants responded at both these time points. The

Paths from core belief disruption to post-traumatic stress symptoms and post-traumatic growth among Korean undergraduates: The mediating role of rumination.

The post-traumatic growth (PTG) model proposes that cognitive processing is a key mechanism that leads to growth in the aftermath of traumatic events. Building upon the PTG model, the present study examined the paths from the disruption of core beliefs to post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and PTG via intrusive and deliberate rumination. The sample includes 370 Korean undergraduate students who reported at least one highly stressful experience in their lifetime. Structural equation modeling demonstrated that disruption of core beliefs predicted PTG both directly and indirectly through multi

Incidence of abnormal offspring from cloning and other assisted reproductive technologies.

In animals produced by assisted reproductive technologies, two abnormal phenotypes have been characterized. Large offspring syndrome (LOS) occurs in offspring derived from in vitro cultured embryos, and the abnormal clone phenotype includes placental and fetal changes. LOS is readily apparent in ruminants, where a large calf or lamb derived from in vitro embryo production or cloning may weigh up to twice the expected body weight. The incidence of LOS varies widely between species. When similar embryo culture conditions are applied to nonruminant species, LOS either is not as dramatic or may ev

[Structure in rations of dairy cattle (author's transl)].

Efficient utilization of feed by ruminants is closely related to fermentation in the reticulum and rumen. A deficiency is long roughage ("structural material") may impair this fermentation and result in a low-milk fat syndrome. The deficiency in long roughage is particularly apparent in diets containing large amounts of readily available carbohydrates. Factors involved in the absence of structure were described. Readily available carbohydrates such as sugars and starch from grains will promote high concentrations of volatile fatty acids in the rumen. Chewing and ruminating stimulate the secret

Comprehensive Manometric Evaluation of Dysphagia in Patients with Down Syndrome.

Dysphagia is a common symptom in children with Down syndrome and is conventionally evaluated with imaging and endoscopy; high-resolution manometry is not routinely utilized. The aim of this study was to describe and correlate pharyngeal and esophageal manometry findings with contrast studies and endoscopy in patients with Down syndrome and dysphagia. Electronic medical records of patients with Down syndrome with dysphagia seen at our center between January 2008 and January 2022 were reviewed. Data collected included demographics, co-morbidities, symptoms, imaging, endoscopy, and manometry. Twe

Epidemiology and Clinical Manifestations of Listeria monocytogenes Infection.

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive pathogenic bacterium which can be found in soil or water. Infection with the organism can develop after ingestion of contaminated food products. Small and large outbreaks of listeriosis have been described. Listeria monocytogenes can cause a number of clinical syndromes, most frequently sepsis, meningitis, and rhombencephalitis, particularly in immunocompromised hosts. The latter syndrome mimics the veterinary infection in ruminants called "circling disease". Neonatal infection can occur as a result of maternal chorioamnionitis ("early onset" sepsis) o

From the bluetongue vaccination campaigns in sheep to overimmunization and ovine ASIA syndrome.

The use of vaccines has proven to be very effective in controlling and eradicating infectious diseases, both in veterinary and human medicine; however, vaccines can be also the source of an array of problems caused by procedures such as overimmunization. Bluetongue, an orbiviral disease that affects ruminants, is best controlled by the use of inactivated vaccines. During the last years of the past decade, these vaccines were applied all over Europe to control the spreading of the disease, a goal that was accomplished; however, at the same time, several adverse effects related to the vaccinatio

Ayurveda in the integrative management of bovine secondary recumbency-a case report.

Downer cow syndrome, or secondary recumbency, is a condition primarily affecting dairy cows, where the animal is unable to rise and stand, due to unknown cause. It is usually associated with poor prognosis. Terminal downers are euthanized in most countries. A four-year old Kasarkode dwarf-cow, post-calving was brought up laterally recumbent with heavy nasal discharge, labored breathing, loss of appetite and signs of dehydration on 6th day of its recumbency. Before this, the patient was diagnosed with milk fever and standard treatment with calcium borogluconate was administered intravenously. T

Maternal depressive symptoms, rumination, and child emotion regulation.

Children of depressed mothers are at risk for maladaptive emotion regulation. This study examined a model of maternal rumination that links maternal depressive symptoms to child emotion regulation. A sample of 126 mother-child dyads (65 girls) participated in the current study, at three assessment points when children were age three, four, and five. At all assessment points, mothers reported their depressive symptoms and ruminative response style. Child emotion regulation was assessed observationally from two laboratory tasks, which were designed to elicit anger and sadness. Elevated maternal

Stage models for major depression: Cognitive behavior therapy, mechanistic treatment targets, and the prevention of stage transition.

Stage models encourage a longitudinal perspective on the care of those with major depression: supporting vigilance to the risk for stage progression and the selection of interventions to address that risk. A central goal for this article is to evaluate the role of cognitive-behavior therapy (CBT) in addressing stage progression in the treatment of major depression. We summarize the evidence supporting depression-focused CBT for: (1) preventing depression onset, (2) treating syndromal depression, (3) treating residual symptoms, (4) preventing relapse, and (5) addressing pharmacologic treatment

Refractory GERD, beyond proton pump inhibitors.

Pharmacologic therapy, surgery, minimally invasive therapies, and alternative therapies are different options available for the management of refractory GERD. The choice may depend on the cause of refractoriness. Increased gastric acid suppression therapy might be useful in the rare patients with persistent elevated esophageal acid exposure on proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Potassium-competitive acid blockers (P-CAB) might induce a more important acid inhibition than PPI. Baclofen might act as a reflux inhibitor and demonstrates a significant efficacy in rumination syndrome. The role of topical…
