BACKGROUND: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is characterized by lack of bony covering of the superior semicircular canal in the inner ear, resulting in a third mobile window with altered functioning of the superior semicircular canal. Vertigo in association with sound and pressure changes often occurs. This study examines the relationship between dehiscence size and frequency of sound-induced vertigo.
METHOD: Retrospective review of 22 patients with SSCD, noting the auditory frequency producing the maximal electronystagmographic response.

OBJECTIVE: To determine if Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA) otitis media (OM) increases the risk of sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) with semicircular canal transection in the guinea pig model.
METHODS: PA was injected transtympanically into both middle ears of pigmented guinea pigs. Saline-injected animals served as controls. Two to 4 days after injection, one horizontal semicircular canal was transected and sealed. Hearing was tested using electrocochleography before and after transection.

We report a family with inner ear lateral semicircular canal (LSC) malformation and external and middle ear abnormalities. The family had no history of known syndromes or toxic exposures. Distinct phenotypic manifestations were found in three family members. A young girl exhibited bilateral LSC malformation with a right-sided preauricular tag, a mildly deformed auricle, a stenotic external auditory canal, and a constricted middle ear cavity. OBJECTIVE: Lateral semicircular canal (LSCC) malformation is one of the most common radiological inner ear malformations. Traditionally, inner ear malformations are thought to be associated with sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). Recent experience with patients with LSCC malformation suggested that LSCC malformation may be associated with both SNHL and conductive hearing loss (CHL). The auditory phenotype associated with LSCC malformation is not well delineated. The objective of this study is to define the nature of the hearing loss associated with LSCC malformation.

Recently Minor and co-workers described patients with sound- and pressure-induced vertigo due to dehiscence of bone overlying the superior semicircular canal. Spontaneous activity from 120 vestibular semicircular canal (SC) primary afferents and driven responses from 20 SC primary afferents to 2.3-decade bandwidth (0.029-6.152 Hz) sum of sinusoidal angular rotations were characterized in 10 unanesthetized pigeons. OBJECTIVE: To characterise subjective symptoms in patients undergoing surgical repair of superior semicircular canal dehiscence.
METHODS: Questionnaires assessing symptom severity and impact on function and quality of life were administered to patients before superior semicircular canal dehiscence surgery, between June 2011 and March 2016. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) has been used to characterize cochlear endolymphatic hydrops (ELH) with distention of Reissner's membrane in mice after noise exposure. Mammalian vestibular organs have two types of hair cell, type I and type II, which differ morphologically and electrophysiologically.
