A rationale for a simplified occlusal design in restorative dentistry: historical review and clinical guidelines.

An occlusal contact pattern in which the number of occlusal contacts has been substantially reduced as compared with traditional schemes is … nce between the resting pressures of the muscles of the cheeks and the tongue. The mechanics of the stomatognathic system are not as accurate as their counterpart on an articulator. The variability of the guiding surfaces inherent to the temporomandibular joints should be incorporated into an occlusal design. Occlusal contacts that do not fulfill a justifiable purpose …

Occlusal disharmony and chronic oro-facial pain: from clinical observation to animal study.

BACKGROUND: Occlusion can be viewed as the most sensitive susceptor of the central nervous system in the oro-facial region. Its inalienable relationships to the temporomandibular joint, the muscles, the stomatognathic system and even the central nervous system are self-evident. Almost all the dental treatments inevitably change the occlusion, potentially or actually, locally or extensively, and immediately or gradually. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to present a narrative literature on occlusal disharmony and chronic oro-facial pain. METHODS: Literature reviews focusing on clini…

[The suitability of orthodontical groups of indications (OGI) for preventive dental examinations of the public health service].

In the context of the dental preventive medical examinations of the public health service, the orthodontical data-gathering in children's day-care centre and schools, in contrast to the diagnoses of caries disease, was made was based so far on a non-uniform methodology. In order to provide in future, also in the orthodontical sector, data material that is usable for comparative national and local health reporting, a uniform methodology should form the basis for the data acquisition. The present study makes a contribution to this objective. A goal of the work was to test two different collectio

Oropharyngeal fetus in fetu.

Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare entity and refers to the growth of a "parasitic" twin within a more mature fetus due to its inclusion within cells of the blastocyst. The presence of a vertebral column is considered essential for the diagnosis of a fetus in fetu. The retroperitoneum is the most common location for a fetus in fetu and its location in the mouth is rare. We report a case of oropharyngeal mass detected on antenatal sonography with imaging features consistent with a fetus in fetu. Complete surgical removal of the mass was aided by imaging. Follow-up of these patients is recommend

Effects of food processing on masticatory strain and craniofacial growth in a retrognathic face.

Changes in the technology of food preparation over the last few thousand years (especially cooking, softening, and grinding) are hypothesized to have contributed to smaller facial size in humans because of less growth in response to strains generated by chewing softer, more processed food. While there is considerable comparative evidence to support this idea, most experimental tests of this hypothesis have been on non-human primates or other very prognathic mammals (rodents, swine) raised on hard versus very soft (nearly liquid) diets. Here, we examine facial growth and in vivo strains generat

[Oral symptoms of immunologic disorders. Part I. Systemic autoimmune diseases].

Polysystemic autoimmune diseases often cause orofacial and stomatognathic symptoms. Inflammation of the temporomandibular joint only rarely and slightly reduces the range of mouth opening (rheumatoid arthritis), which is much more restricted in systemic sclerosis due to fibrosis of perioral soft tissues. Weakness of masticatory and pharyngeal muscles in idiopathic inflammatory myopathies results in dysphagia and dystonia. Ulcerations, petechiae, teleangiectasia, and lichenoid lesions are the characteristic symptoms of oral mucosal involvement, but drugs used in systemic treatment can also caus

Dental Malocclusion and Its Relation to the Podal System.

Background and Objective: This study analyzes the possibility that Stomatognathic and Postural systems are related by muscle chains. Malocclusion may influence the posture, contact between the foot and the ground, center of mass, footprint or vice-versa. This study aimed to verify whether there is a relationship between dental occlusion and podal system. Materials and Methods: A cross-cutting, descriptive study was carried out on 409 children (222 boys and 187 girls) between 8 and 14 years old. Dental occlusion was assessed on the sagittal plane (Angle's classification) the contact between the

Imaging evaluation of the suprahyoid neck.

Evaluating the complex anatomy of the suprahyoid neck on imaging studies can be a daunting task without a sound understanding of anatomy and a systematic approach. In this article, the suprahyoid neck is divided into characteristic anatomic spaces, which allow for the accurate localization of both normal structures and abnormal pathology in the neck. Once a lesion is localized to a specific suprahyoid space, imaging characteristics and clinical data can be used in a logical fashion to provide a clinically useful imaging differential diagnosis.

[Oral manifestations of COVID-19 and the role of the ACE2 receptor: what is known so far?].

COVID-19 is a currently pandemic disease that worries professionals in all areas of the Health Sciences. Current literature indicates that certain components of the stomatognathic system (such as lips, oral mucosa, tongue, and tonsils) express ACE2 receptors, responsible for the binding of SARS-CoV-2 to the human cell. This expression has a big impact on organular compromise, turning the oral cavity not only into an important route of viral entry but also into a region with the possibility of various manifestations such as xerostomia, halitosis, chemosensory alteration, opportunistic coinfecti…
